I watched the first episode of Vinland Saga. I'm guessing this is gonna be a slow burn intro or shit gets real quickly.

The opening fight scene was super anime though. Figured the show would be more grounded in reality, but I guess not. Oh well.
The show is generally fairly grounded except for a handful of characters who kind of do superhuman feats and everybody in universe reacts as in "how the hell did you just do that that's not possible?"

Thors and Thorkell the tall are two of like literally five characters in the series (so far in season 2) who can just do insane-humans can't do that-stuff. Everybody else has to adhere to reality....

I mean aside from limbs coming off probably too easy. Cutting off someone's head or leg or arm if they aren't bound in an execution setting is actually extremely difficult. (Even bound in a set position it's hard.) Physics and how anatomy reacts to blows means that while it possible to gash out a huge fatal chunk of a guy, cutting off limbs in a fight intentionally in one swing isn't something anybody can reliably do. But in Vinland Saga lots of limbs do be getting chopped when fights do happen.

I felt bad for Guel somehow losing the moral argument to a guy currently causing a terrorist attack on a school. At least he managed to win the much more important Gundam argument.

I watched one of those DBZA commentary videos they’re putting out and I remembered that hey, Dragon Ball is good actually, and now I’m gonna go and watch the two new movies I haven’t seen

At some point I might watch more of Super but while the dub is good the animation and music just… rarely get it together. Do we know if they’re gonna make more of that, and if they’re gonna give it a bit more time to cook, because that’s what it felt like it needed

Also I’m never not gonna miss the 90s dub soundtrack, that extremely weird and specific vibe is just tied to the show in my head and I’m always gonna enjoy the rescores I see on YouTube

The best thing to come out of Super has been the movies, the show doesn't get good imo until the multi-universe arc

Goku black zamasu stuff was a fan favorite but I really disliked they redid future trunks stuff but worse imo

I stopped watching right at the Goku Black stuff, just didn’t sound super interesting to me, but I did really enjoy the stuff with Hit, that dude was cool

The multiverse tournament is the one major thing I sort of wanna see

It felt that way at the time but maybe people have cooled on it over the years. I just remembered a lot of hype around that arc and feeling like I was the only one among my friends who wasn't liking it

The Goku Black arc had a lot of dumb stuff but it also had a bunch of cool stuff. So the love it or hate it reactions make sense to me.

The idea of someone figuring that the best way to get shit done is to hijack the body of the strongest person they know of, aka Goku, is a pretty good plot hook.

And then they introduce Zamasu the Fantastic Racist and it never stops going downhill between the endless plot armor and literal deus ex machina asspulls at crucial moments several different times. One example of which being that at no point after doing his body swap with Goku did Zamasu ever figure out any of his techniques, including basic Super Saiyan. And when Goku and Vegeta comment on this fact suddenly Zamasu figures out Super Saiyan on the spot, only instead of base Super Saiyan it's a totally custom and original Super Saiyan form able to fight on par with their Red (God) forms.

And he does this several more times through the entire fight, not knowing how to do a thing until suddenly he not only knows how to do the thing perfectly but even better than the original he didn't know about until just now. It can't even be explained as him being a fighting genius because at one point he and Goku spar before the body swap and he gets absolutely wrecked dramatic combo perfect finish because he's a rank amateur at fighting.

The one neat thing they did with original Future Trunks was having him be the one aiding the original Supreme Kai during the threat of Majin Buu, which is why Buu never materialized (no Vegeta to pull a wild card), Beerus never showed up (he died when the Supreme Kai did), and without Dragon Balls there was no way to bring back Frieza so no Golden Frieza to contend with.

After the Androids and Cell were dealt with that timeline actually had it pretty good overall!

    There's real potential!

Oh i know, but like mainstream wise, we've never really had a gundam go hard on the inter-planet colonization part of things, and i'd honestly love that? You could get a really rich series out of competing intrests trying to colonize mars or similar, i think.

I especially like when some of them try their best to understand humans and human concepts like (guilt, malice and morality) using their innate intelligence, but in the end they fail because they're an alien life form that simply cannot coexist with humans.

    Okay I watched Broly

It was alright! The animation was gorgeous and the first forty minutes were actually really engaging, because they were way more concerned with like… setting up a more traditional story and motivations and such, rather than the typical Dragon Ball movie structure, which is more like the buildup to a to wrestling match. The action was great, though it goes on for so long at the end and does eventually start to wear thin. Broly’s character got such a glow up in terms of design and personality and growth (fuck Vic Mignona though) and his two supporters are great too

All in all it was comfortably one of the best Dragon Ball movies I’ve ever seen! I mean, most of them aren’t great to begin with, so it’s not a high bar to clear, but still! A good watch

    Then I watched Super Hero

    Yo

That was like a real movie

It cared about its characters and its story, it didn’t want to waste an audience’s time, it tried to do new things, it was even (somehow) watchable for someone who doesn’t know much about Dragon Ball, and that’s on top of it being loaded with what I can only describe as the smartest fan service I’ve ever seen — just tons and tons of little details that communicate character and care about development and arcs, but aren’t necessary to enjoy the film on a surface level

I mean for gods sake it’s a Dragon Ball film centered on the supporting characters! Piccolo and Gohan are the heroes! 18 shows up at the end! This film could have had animation that looked half as good and I would have loved it, but luckily the CG worked exceptionally well. There were so many visual gags and characterful animations going on, even during the opening which could have just been the dullest sort of exposition and setup! Just genuinely great filmmaking all around

So yeah, Dragon Ball Super Hero is like… a good movie! Not even grading on a curve, I’d say it’s a good watch for anyone, but mostly for folks who like Dragon Ball stuff obviously

I can't stand Super Hero mainly because it decided to
bring back Cell except take away all his villanous charisma and intelligence to just become a big, angry nothing.

Also for how utterly stupid the Gammas are to think they're superheroes while actively working for the biggest terrorist organization on the planet with a very iconic symbol. It'd be like someone claiming to be a good person while sporting the double SS on their costume without questioning it.

I liked Hero and while Toriyama's designs translate well to the 3D animation style, Broly is better imo just based off the animation alone. It has some of the best transformation sequences and fights in all of dragon ball animation. Like shit was white hot. Hero was nice to give Piccolo and Gohan some stuff to do (you can tell they really wanted to give Piccolo an alt form to sell some toys and gacha) but if I'm gonna recommend one DBS movie to someone it's Broly because it's so damn pretty

it’s both, the conspiracy fed to him at the top of the movie is what he tells the Gammas, and it’s what sells him on joining up, but he also admits later that he kinda knew it was horseshit, he just wanted the money and resources to do his work more than he cared about being lied to

Both of these things are stated pretty explicitly in the movie so I don’t really know how anyone could get confused
