I know a while back I got a new computer screen, plugged it in and my computer threw one hell of a tantrum.

Then I plugged my portable hard drive back in, and my computer chilled out and blue is fine if you unplug the hard drive. Or the cats do.

    Why? Fuck if I know!

Gotta say this is maybe low key the most insane thing Shaddiq has said

It’s amusing to me that while Propsera clearly has The Absolute Madness Revenge Plan aspect of Char and the Mask, it’s Shaddiq who clearly bears the influence of Char’s whole “just a completely maladjusted sense of interpersonal relationship” deal

Also not a recent spoiler, but I can’t help thinking that at some point the spin off manga for WFM, Vanadis Heart, is going to reveal that one of its leads
Is actually Belmeria prior to Peil taking her in

Vilda Miren, five years after the Vanadis Incident vs Belmeria, present day:

    q56pohzdbn1b.png

So that gives sixteen years between the manga and when we see Belmeria

I could be wrong but it does seem like it’s Occam’s razor the whole aspect of how many people survived the raid and subsequent destruction of the facility

I wish I could express how funny I found it that they're just like "ah yeah we got another secret Gundam we kept after we blew up Vanadis, just in case you know"

    Okay to be fair
I can totally believe the space corpo government would keep the dangerous super weapon just in case. Cause the actual reason they got banned wasn't the human cost, it was the cost competing with them could cause. Super weapons that could potentially destroy all existing weapons+also your own best pilots? That's a lose lose for everybody.

It's kind of like the dreadnought effect. Where, in real life, the UK creating the dreadnought ended up being a very expensive mistake. It was a new type of ship that could literally blow out of the water any previous ship designs. Britain built it to cement its naval dominance... but then every nation in the world realized that if they could just make a couple of dreadnoughts of their own they'd also obsolete almost the entire Royal Navy. And so then every large nation started spending ludicrous sums of money building fancy new ships... the opposite effect Britain had hoped for.

"Black Jack" by Osamu Tezuka is getting a new chapter created by Tezuka Production with the help of AI based on ChatGPT-4 this Fall 2023 in Weekly Shounen Champion magazine.

This is to celebrate the 50th anniversary of this cult medical manga series.

I watched the Prologue to Mobile Suit Gundam: Witch from Mercury

I get irritated at this tendency for sci-fi mech anime to treat their technology like they have no fucking clue how it works.

Like, "we build this big-ass robot, but it sucks the life out of its pilots and also only works for some pilots and we don't know why"

Like it's some alien artifact that they just found and are having to figure out. Did they build this fucking thing or not? If they did, why would they build a fucking weapon of war that only works for the random "chosen one" or whatever.

Oh also it's totally for exploration and the betterment of humanity, pay no attention to all the weapons systems on-board.

I dunno, the woo woo quasi-mystic shit just bugs me.

    In this case
it was really a technology they developed for like prosthetics and medical tech and they knew how it worked, but then arms companies (primarily Ochs earth) took that and blew up the scale to gundam sized and were trying to toe the line of “harming some of the pilots is worth it for the gains to space capitalism” until enough backlash tipped the scale and delling went way overboard in response.

As shown at least, idk maybe they have some magic stuff to reveal still it’s literally just a problem of scale; tying a robot hand to your brain stem can let your brain control the hand. Tying a giant hand to your brain stem has proportionally more connections and simulated nerves/impulses/strain.

Vanadis was working to try to reduce/remove that strain because people had already taken their medical tech and turned it into weapons

They do kind of gloss over this in the actual story because they decided they don't have the run time to explain all the world building, I guess, just sort of gesture towards it vaguely but not worry about it because understanding why gundams kill the pilots isn't necessary to get the story, just understanding that they do. I think they could have stood to squeeze in a better explanation for it.

My friends and I have been theorizing for years that Tomino is actually an alien that is observing humanity but not quite getting the whole deal, which is why he swings back and forth from "keen and trenchant observation of human motivations and emotions" to "absolutely bugfuck, no-human-would-ever-say-this-aloud-Yoshiyuki-what-the-fuck" like a metronome.

for another example, it took until some years ago for scientists to figure out why ice is slippery
(the answer: probably gradual melting caused by pressure/friction that leads to a lubricating layer of self-healing water-ice between the object and the ice)

also it took until 2005ish for people to get high-speed photography of bumblebees and figure out how they can fly (it's because they generally flap their wings back and forth, not up and down)

also in 2014 they figured out part of why we sleep (sleeping helps your brain neurons grow in a way that conserves memories) (previous answers included, I am not joking, "I dunno, I guess we sleep because we get sleepy")

also I guess in 2011 they figured out that self-balancing bicycles isn't about gyroscopes as much as it's about the tilt of the steering axis and the location of the front mass

The point is that even if aeronautical engineers didn't know precisely how "lift" works, they do know how planes work.

They don't speak to the plane in soothing tones between test flights in hopes that the plane will feel like flying today.

Also I watched the first episode and
I guess the school is cool with not only letting students resolve any dispute with duels, but also with letting those duels destroy the station and endanger the lives of people on the ground.

Is the head of that school supposed to be an incompetent asshole?

The main girl is alright in her bumbling "gosh aren't I just so earnest" way, but so many of the other characters introduced need to just trip and fall down a well.

lol I got recommended it too. Classic Koji Morimoto animation! You can just instantly see his style everywhere.

I love how I can tell a studio 4*C production in general by vibes but especially when Morimoto's involved. This feels like a slightly more subdued version of whatever the hell was going on in his later short film Dimension Bomb

Did not see Puck being an Armageddon Wolf coming.

Subaru is violently self-centered. He never seemed to have learned that no one else has his perspective on things, and gets violently offended when he's reminded of that fact. He also gets violently offended when he's reminded that people have goals that don't align with his own, even when the misalignment isn't hindering him. He also can't share information unless it's a way to show or prove to himself how hardcore/self-sacrificing he is.

    cw for personal psychological issues
I've had similar tendencies and behavior correlated with symptoms of meditative practices and relaxation-induced anxiety. I think Buddhism preaching that you'll understand that you don't exist and that you'll escape the cycle of life and death if you relax attain Nirvana has a lot to do with why many Japanese anime (among other pieces of media) is so batshit crazy. Their creators are apprehensive they'll literally leave this world if they peace out too much. From personal experience, that tends to keep one on one's toes, and long-term stress impairs mental and social faculties.

I hope Subaru starts being more empathic soon.

Yep, they are! The schools leader isn't incompetent, the entire setting of the school is designed to reinforce the existing power structures via teaching the students that might makes right and life isn't fair.

Even their dueling "oath" calls out that it's not just the skill of the pilot that matters - if your mech is a Ferrari and the other guys is just some junker that it's unclear can even move?

Good job, you earned that win by having the better mech.

I've mentioned this before, but the gensis of gundam and it's various stylings is very funny.

See, first you have this Akira Kurosawa guy. Who's films, notably The Hidden Castle, really influenced this George Lucas fellow. Who's Star Wars got stuck in the head of this Tomino guy.

and this is why newtypes and beam sabers exist. It's hilariously recursive!

More seriously: Witch From Mercury is a series that generally really rewards media literacy and paying attention. It's not a flawless work (If anything, it's a bit too fast paced and informationally dense), but it's a series that's done with a LOT of intent, and packs a ton of depth into things. I dont think it's a mistake or fluke that it's popped off the way it has. Even just examining it in the context of Shakespear's The Tempest makes for a LOT of interesting reading eg - Suletta is both Miranda and
    Caliban
. You can disagree with the conclusions it draws, but most everything it does is done with intent, and lots of it.

    I love it!

holy shit that Quiet Zero scene.

That's quite the "component" to have had hidden at Plant Quetta. No one noticed this space obelisk before now?

Also mildly annoyed we're getting Lauda as the last minute boss fight before the finale, I don't think he's has nearly enough spotlight to justify this.

    I think
Lauda’s never going to get close to Miorine; I think people are expecting Suletta to have to fight him because he’s going after Miorine so that connection is obvious, but I think even if there’s a scuffle between them it’s going to be another fight for Guel because ultimately everything with Lauda more deeply connects with what Guel has been going through. It also allows them to mirror the fight between Guel and Vim, but provide an opportunity for him to avert the same tragedy.

Vim ends up dying because of his greed and overreach getting him played, losing control of the situation he thoguht he was in charge of with the raid on Plant Quetta, and ends up dying to Guel who kills him unwittingly in self defense and being too naive about the world he’s really engaged in. Now with Guel’s growth a similar situation will be thrown in front of him, and we’ll see through that conflict just how much he’s grown and if it’s enough to now save his loved one from the self-destructive path they’ve thrown themselves down. I think what we’ve seen with Guel vs. Shaddiq that he’s definitely grown in that way (you can read his de-limbing of the Michaelis as a change in technique to avoid risking a killing blow), but it’ll be tested even further now given the state his brother will undoubtedly be in emotionally

There’s also the question if Lauda’s actually Permet augmented or not; my understanding is he’s not adopted, but Vim’s son from a mistress of his (so paternal half brothers with Guel), so I’m not sure if that’s enough of a “not the heir” for Vim to have subjected him to that sort of thing while keeping Guel “pure”
