Also w/re to Lodoss War, I don’t know if it’s the anime or what but it felt like there were extreme jumps in time in between some of the episodes. Like it was missing some parts

Lodoss War the OVA definitely had large time jumps, they called them out explicitly as time jumps in the narration but it did still feel jarring sometimes.

I love when fantasy shows are allowed to just be a fantasy show without isekai or video game mechanics shoved into it for no reason

I know it’s an Isekai, but I like Handyman Saitou for this.

Dude is fairly useless outside of repairing things and being helpful to his party members. Iirc there’s no game mechanics (outside of one off references for a gag), cheat abilities, or other Isekai tropes shoved into it outside of Saitou himself. The first few episodes are vignettes of Saitou’s crew and other characters delving in a State Run dungeon.

Adding that one to the list.

I think I only like Isekai because there's not enough fantasy anime in general. Slayers and Lodoss War are what brought me to anime, and I have a hard time finding anything that hits either of those notes.

Mushoku Tensei is getting real close for me though.

The style of Lodoss War is precisely what led me to Frieren and Saitou. MT started off like that, but I’m having a super hard time with the mc and the plot points.
MT season 1 and 2 spoilers
I feel like I had to choke down parts of season 1 and nearly the entirety of season 2. There’s still good bits in the story overall but Jesus I do not need to see an entire arc on Rudy’s ED and him still being an utter creep

I haven't gotten to season 2 yet. Season 1 has kinda snuck up on me though, Rudy is a creep but he catches himself and realizes that he's wrong when he does. It's characters self-reflection I don't expect in an isekai.

There's so much good anime I want to watch but don't have time for, I don't know why I'd want to instead spend that time watching shows I already know every detail of because they're discussed nonstop in the general anime thread instead of their own dedicated thread. People manage to contain themselves to dedicated threads around here for games pretty well, even for movies usually, and it's frustrating that we can't do the same for anime. And there instead has to be a page of spoilers twice a week when whatever show Crunchyroll has spent the most ad money on airs.

Even D&D has figured this out. C'mon.

And what is being proposed is that when a show takes up so much real-estate in what is for all purposes a mega-thread, it should get its own independent thread, ya know, like we do for a lot of other topics.

We have a thread entirely for DBZ, we can (and should) keep doing that for shows that will maintain active, focused discussion.

You do realize if we did that for every anime that's popular we'd crowd out the entirety of SE+ in a hurry right.

And it's not "sustained" conversation when the bulk of it happens immediately after a weekly release then peters out until the next one.

    Eeeeehhhhhhhhhhh.

Kinda. Y’all aren’t as clever as you think you are when you post half your comment outside the spoiler box.

Just point it out, it's not grounds for "everything needs its own thread". How much chatter do CSM and WFM get now? Almost none, it comes with the season. Hell, the two biggest shows this season are JJK and SxF, and neither gets much talk here.

The chainsaw man thread gets 1-6 posts a week, usually on Tuesday, and one of those is mine. Not sure if that level of activity would detract from this thread.

We occasionally get a page or two that's all Gundam, or Kamen Rider, or some other large popular franchise, and I just scroll past. I don't see the harm.

I'm certainly not bothered even if I don't watch basically any of the shows that cause big walls of spoiler blocks. Honestly I've been surprised at how comparatively few posts there are about Frieren given how popular the show seems elsewhere!

And I mean, I guess I'm weird because I'm just not really bothered by figuring out some stuff from how people talk about a show? If anything I tend to consider it a positive that has a better chance to catch my curiosity than asking for suggestions and getting people writing blurbs that are carefully curated to tell me nothing because spoilers bad. It's a way to get a sense for what happens in a show and whether I may be interested in actually watching it without getting the full faceful of everything that happens in it.

    alright i watched castlevania nocturne

I feel like at some point in development this series had a little more going on, ideas-wise, and then somebody high up the ladder got real grumpy about the French and Haitian revolution stuff so instead of Marie Antoinette, vampire, Elizabeth Bathory is here and so on. There's definitely a few thoughts its probably better they didn't finish, but it's weird that they left the start in, y'know?

Anyways they really do gotta hire a writer who has been to sunday school once if they're gonna keep dragging faith into these, i remember back in season three one of the villains basically went "rrrrrrrriddle me this, Belmont: if god exists, why do bad things happen to good people???" and it hasn't really improved since

yeah, but that wrapped up in three episodes and they were there to kick things off and promptly get torn into a red mist

making them more central to the plot means they've gotta hold up to slightly more scrutiny

of course, this series is playing with the historical ties between the church and crown, and what actually happened to those institutions during the French Revolution. But the metaphor is just find/replace "nobility" with "vampires" and i don't think it works, because the vampires are actively trying to replace the church with a new god? Like there's no mutually beneficial relationship here, they are just going to eat these guys, and the abbott's like "doing it all for you JC! time to feed my hell machine i got by making a deal with hell!" and i'm just not sure how he's self-justifying squaring this circle

Broadly I don't think there's enough interest in anime discussion here to sustain many separate threads for different anime threads. The Dragonball thread works because it's fucking Dragonball. I suspect a One Piece thread would also probably work if there isn't one already.

Beyond that, I'm not sure what would be discussed in this thread if people consistently go "well I don't like it when other people talk about this manga/anime so stop". I do think people try and not drop enormous spoilers out in the open but also if you're really worried about being spoiled on currently airing anime that you aren't currently watching... why are you scrolling a generalized ongoing anime discussion thread?

For me it felt like they were stuck in this awkward place between trying to mimic warren ellis's style, but not getting ellis to write it. Which, like, good, Ellis is a jerkwad and can fuck right off, but they should have found their own voice for things - Ellis, for good or ill, was very... distinct, shall we say.

I was under the impression that was intentional. The abbot did NOT think his plan through because he was consumed with stopping the revolution. IIRC, he even gets called out on this, saying how shortsighted his plan is. I was also under the impression he wasn't representative of the whole church, more like an extremist, but I don't have anything to back that up beyond it being my take.
