    Megumin is supposed to be 13-14? Huh ok I hate that, I had assumed she and kazuma were both significantly closer to darkness' age.
    E: sounds like the light novel was much better and bad manga editors ruined it huh

    Eh, honestly, I tend to ignore "ages said by the editor in external materials", because they are universally nonsense.

    Did you know Yoko and Kamina from Gurren Lagann are stated to be like 15? And Seto Kaiba is supposedly 16? Except of course they're fucking not, those people are not written like highschoolers. Kazuma is very much written like the college dropout he is. So on.

    there's enough stuff in konosuba to nope out from than just the age thing, honestly

    Not to defend Konosuba overly much, as it doesn't deserve it for several reasons, but the original story ages CLEARLY fit better. Megumin's entire backstory bit was literally her graduating from a magic high school of sorts.

    Loved Frieren this week. Super sweet juxtaposition of old and new.

    Full manga spoilers:
    The significance of this chapter did not dawn on me originally. The most recent manga arc brought it into focus again, and omg it was so obvious. Watching this episode after finishing the most recent manga arc was extra sweet.

    Latest one-punch man (chapter 195):
    heck yeah, the 'arch-enemies must team up for a bit to deal with some other annoying lower-grade enemies' is still one of my favorite story beats.

    Honestly for a while I literally thought it was just a language issue thing where what they called high school Japan was the equivalent of what Americans call college since most of the time that is how they are written and behaved.

    Other than stuff like EVA where them being 14 and that being fucked up is kind of core to the thing, but also they act and look like idiot little teenagers that don't know what they're doing.

    this is true and also true of "high school" media in the US now that I think about it

    How ages are portrayed in anime can vary greatly depending on art style, but also seems to slide along in comparison to how we're supposed to view the characters. If the main cast is high-school age, they'll generally all be way more adult than they probably should be, whereas if the main cast are adults, high-schoolers are much portrayed as more juvenile.

    Frieren episode 14
    Gotta feel sorry for Himmel. Dude fell in love with one of the most oblivious women on the entire planet. Wonder if he stayed single his entire life purely on the off-chance that Frieren would maybe realize, even if it's after he's dead. Heaven is apparently a thing in this world after all, so he's guaranteed to reunite with her eventually.

    I would certainly be impressed by an adult genius if his name was Billy Quizboy. Like what's his story? Was he born a genius? Or did he feel pressured by his family name? Or maybe his real name was Sammy Simplechap, but he was shunned by his clan for not following in the footsteps of his elders? So many questions.

    It is a lot. I think we started it in like July. Yes there is a lot of sad. But a lot of antisad, if we ever invent a term for that.

    S4 really dragged for me but I’m glad we watched it all. It’s just like they all have filler monster of the week episodes but every other season paces story development in between them and 4 literally just had them take up the bulk of the middle episodes.

    S5 was mostly good about pace. There was one part really starting annoying me
    with how antagonistic every group was with each other even after literally every story revelation of the season revolved around being stronger together or trusting each other or like basic stuff they had already covered in earlier series. Like I get it they wanted to pay it off in the last block of episodes but a season feels long when it’s 20+ episodes of “we can’t work together” or “don’t trust them” while clearly working at least in parallel
    .
    The finale was great and paid it off but it’s hard to know until you get there

    I think it’s neither technically? Or at least it’s that they redubbed the OG series without the early 90s US censorship at some point in between. That’s what we watched. It’s the version available on crunchyroll

    We might do crystal at some point but I vaguely recall that I didn’t hear good things about it

    Crystal removes every ounce of personality from the series. Do not watch under any circumstance.

    It's more that high school is a combination of:

    * A common life experience for most of the audience, who is either going through it or has gone through it;
    * A setting where the characters have a degree of autonomy while not having a lot of responsibility, allowing for shenanigans;
    * A setting that provides a bunch of pre-built story arcs, conflicts, and structure (see Red's recent Tropes Talk on superhero school for more details);
    * As well as a lot rather...distasteful (to put it very fucking mildly) cultural focus on youth and the past regrets of the writers;
    * In addition, if we're talking about tween-focused media (like shonen and shojo manga/anime), there's the aspirational aspect as well, with the media building on what is for the target audience a major milestone coming up.

    I'm pretty sure they didn't change their school level, but Darien/Mamoru are both in college.

    The girls entered high school over the course of the show but they start as middle schoolers. Seems like the show plays out over about 2 years. And the guys are in college yeah.

    Ok, if the girls weren't explicitly aged up and Darien is always in college then I think when watching the show growing up I went "if her boyfriend is in college then she must be in high school cause a larger age gap would be gross."

    He is aged up in the original for some reason. Mamoru is a high schooler in the manga/crystal

    I guess the idea was portraying the "ooh cool college guy!" fantasy without thinking about the creepy ramifications. (They don't officially become an item until later, but still a, what, 4-5 year gap?)

    I started watching Frieren with my Dad tonight. Unsurprisingly, he loves it. We did the whole "maybe on more episode?" thing three times and ended up watching the first 6 episodes in one sitting, with the odd break to get more drinks and snacks.

    He said it reminded him of the old TTRPG groups he was in decades ago, fantasy novels he read when he was young, and a few other anime series we've seen together. Exactly his sort of thing, but he's also just as impressed as I am with the calibre of the animation, pacing, and sound design.
