it takes a pretty laid back vibes-y pace the whole time so I wouldn't say there's a point it picks up, the feel of the first couple episodes is consistent with the rest of the show. Occasionally there's a couple episodes of a story arc with some tension but the norm is very relaxed.

The most recent incarnation being in like 2008. It's time. Give me more Slayers.

ahh ok got it, I'd assumed it might have been the typical thing of the first 3-5ish eps being lighter on before the show hits its stride

Lina's voice actor was still doing stuff in character a few years ago, I was surprised to learn. I think she was voicing a vtuber version of Lina as a promotional stunt?

There are several arcs in Frieren that have more action than normal, but even when it's in the midst of the action it's still extremely chill.

Someone can be on the verge of death and they'll still be making the same face and chatting in the same tone as someone commenting on the weather.

Huh, yeah I guess the weird result of going almost entirely off of folks' reactions outside of spoilers was that I went into it with an image of Frieren being a pretty different show to what it actually is

Reckon I'll wait until the season is done and give it another proper shot

Because like most entertainment industries, if something is notably successful, the competition will try to capitalize off that. Stuff like Sword Art Online got really big, so everybody wanted their own version of that.

I feel like isekai+video games in real life has been the trope getting done to death since like 2013 or 2014
partly it's because it became the new standard flavor for extremely low effort harem crap that gets shoveled out constantly in the serial light novel mines

I wonder that a lot too. There have been a lot of dumb trends over the years, but the whole reincarnation into a gamified world schtick is particularly specific and has been especially enduring. I think my best theory is that as VNs died and LNs ascended to fill the space of producing multiple shows a season and influencing the original shows in that way too, SAO was what was most popular by a landslide. Had it been like five years earlier, it would've been magical girlfriends (eg Shana/Zero/Index). Or god forbid, incest (OreImo).

Combine this with the asinine popularity "Who wants to be a writer" contests that publishers mainly use to pick up what to carry, and that means that whatever's popular at the time stays especially sticky under kind of a tyranny of the majority deal. If you want to get picked up, you've got to write that specific story with one little twist on it and then who gives a fuck, which is why so many start out with laborious explanations of their mechanics, the MC immediately leaps to OP by like page 5, and LN editors are being driven insane because a ton of these people come up with one quirky idea for a webnovel but can't actually write for shit and have zero work ethic.

this was exactly my experience as well, except I immediately loved it. it's a very slow paced series, but is absolutely better off for it. actually giving characters, conversations, even just single scenes, time to breathe is such an important aspect of storytelling that I feel like a lot of modern anime forget to do well, if at all.

I place the blame for the scourge of shitty isekai and VRMMO anime squarely at the feet of SAO. That we've had some diamonds in the rough along the way doesn't forgive the weight of its sins.

It is the fault of production committees and LN puppy mill operations, blaming SAO is literally missing the forest for one really tall tree.

I can blame SAO if I like! It certainly deserves it since it's so awful. I wasn't claiming to be making an authoritative statement about where all the blame lies haha

But yes yes obviously it's much more complex than that, but I'm still blaming SAO for at least a good portion of it all for being the catalyst.

GGO is written by not only someone completely different to the regular SAO writer, but that someone also happens to be Sigsawa, the author of Kino's Journey. He knows what he's doing.

If you want VR-MMO that's done well, has fantastic fucking art (especially in the manga), zero fanservice (at least so far in a 150+ chapter run), and a good cromulent plot that manages to thread the needle between no stakes (Because it's a vr mmo, and ultiamtley it's just games, so it's only the characters being emotionally invested that matters), and actually having drama, i gotta once again recommend Shangri-La Frontier. Having binged all of the manga so far, it's a real treat, and the anime adaption is not half bad, in fact, it's quite good

I watched entirely too much of it and yeah, pretty much. The first arc is actually pretty good, but then they go and make Asuna helpless instead of the badass she had been to that point, do a bunch of weird sexual assault shit, and just be dumb. Then the GGO part happens and it's very ok but not offensively bad.

Honestly the next part where they're just playing SAO together was kinda fun. Just a bunch of friends playing a dumb game together. This is probably the second best part.

    Then Alicization, what a mess.

Can we talk about RWBY and gen:LOCK? I love me some RWBY, even though the animation in the first few seasons took some getting used to. The most recent season reminded me how much I love Jaune. I haven't watched the new anime yet, but from what I did see it looked kinda cool.

And then there's gen:LOCK. I fucking LOVED the first season. Loved David Tennant. HBO bought it, and it went to shit so hard. Is gratuitous sex scenes a requirement for all HBO shows, including animated ones?? I think I only got to the 3rd episode and gave up. It's literally been years and I'm still bitter.

really, the biggest problem with SAO is that the first initial "stuck in a VRMMO death game" arc is probably the best one... but since it was meant to be submitted to the Dengeki Novel Prize it was one standalone volume (but it was too long to be submitted so he self-published it on the web instead, and also made some side stories and less good continuation stories)

it's honestly hard to believe that it took twelve years for him to actually start a spinoff series of light novels covering that entire Aincrad story at a less breakneck pace, you'd figure that he'd come to that point earlier but I guess the release of the anime adaptation motivated him to do that
(if nothing else, it's better than Alicization... which was releasing simultaneously and I think might be the first not-based-on-the-web-novel arc?)
