I don’t recall this.
Unless you are talking about those specials they did?
Those do some of the older arcs in heavily condensed one-shots but they aren’t full remakes of the show.
They made 16:9 versions of the old episodes as well but they aren’t remakes, they’re just cropped.
oh ok I thought they actually redrew all of them
The dub is safe for you, just a nice normal Dark Gundam. No devils or demons involved!
It's actually really good, if also equally goofy
The specials are new animation, but they are sort of in this weird place because they’ll be condensing a whole arc or saga into like an hour or two. So a lot of canon material gets rushed or cut.
like numerically it's not that much more of a stretch than what they covered in the first season, but I think the last bits need a little more time to breathe
I'm going to rewatch the second episode later tonight because I kinda half-watched it while getting ready this morning.
Devil Gundam, actually. (Yes, that's the official name, though it was changed to Dark Gundam for the US broadcast because BS&P was still in the dark ages at the turn of the millennium.) And yeah, G Gundam is...a ride, though there are bits that have...not aged well (Tequila Gundam was one name that deservedly got changed for the US release.)
OBLIGATORY
Gundam by and large does tend to have them!
The ones I know that are Categorically Happy:
ZZ: The Neo Zeon war ends and Judea fucks off to Jupiter
G: FCD covered that one
Wing: Peace is restored and Preventers works in the background to keep conflict from consuming the Earth Sphere again
X: The Freeden Crew survives and the war between the Colonies and Earth is stopped before it can resume in earnest
Turn A: Bittersweet but the conflict between the earth and moon are stopped, and the bitterness mainly being Loran saying goodbye to Sochie to serve as Diana’s knight for the rest of her time left in a peaceful cabin by a lake
Seed and Seed Destiny: [LOUD DISCORDANT BUZZING AND SCREAMS]
00: Humanity sets aside war, makes contact with what should be an unknowable alien race seeking refuge from the destruction of their world by natural intrastellar cataclysm, forges a bond that promises to take both species out into the unknown to explore together; Setsuna returns years later to visit Marina as a fusion of Human and ELS, a living embodiment of that bond
Build Divers: They don’t murder the AI lady
Build Divers Re:Rise: They save the alien animal people and also learn that the AI lady is the result of an ancient human-like race who saved themselves from extinction by basically uploading themselves as digital consciousnesses and beaming themselves across the cosmos, with an untold number manifesting within the Earth’s computer networks and, amusingly enough, literally in the servers of a Gundam MMO.
Funfact: Turn A’s nanomachines are based on DG cells
No this is not a gag this is canon.
[also, going by what is said in the novels, with enough time and energy it can literally rebuild its pilot from almost nothing if need be]
and ZZ does a lot to soften the downer ending of Zeta
It helps too that ZZ started up like, right after Zeta too, like, I think right the next week
How about 0080, which literally ends with the traumatized tears of an emotionally devastated child?
that is one of the OVAs in the original series timeline
I read the sentence without seeing it, fair point.
Also I'm a little unclear on who all is aware of the switcheroo plot. Did Mao's dad know? Did the other mother? Did the emperor? Did Jinshi? Ah-Duo's head handmaiden obviously did not know, which then makes me wonder who even carried it out in the first place?
Yeah I think a lot of Gundam endings are either happy or bittersweet-happy.
Oh god now there’s two of them.
[a new light novel series of Sousuke and Kaname’s married family life, Full Metal Panic! Family starts its volume releases next month]
who among us did not mistake lust with desperate need for human connection of any kind in our lives?
I hope there's a lot about Sousuke and Kaname and it's not just Full Metal Panic Boruto about their kids
Which... man. What an unfortunately mediocre show that needed like twice the budget and a third of the fucking fluff.
