Though this week's episode (15) certainly hinted at it

Solo Leveling episode 3 finally delivers the basic idea behind this series, took them long enough. I think it's decently enjoyable once it gets going, no promises on adaptation quality, though.

So there’s a translation of a recent interview with Fukuda for the new Seed movie and
    WHAT IS “GUNDAM?”

―――What do you as a director consider the “Gundam” series to be?

If I’m being blunt, it started as nothing more than a robot-themed toy promotion. But with ‘Gundam’ in the title, there’s this expectation to deliver ‘Gundam,’ you know. Personally, I’ve always adhered to the policy of not creating anything that isn’t “Gundam.”

―――What would make it “not Gundam”?

The moment it delves into politics, it ceases to be ‘Gundam.’ What was good about the original “Mobile Suit Gundam” was how at the end, Amuro says, ‘I still have a place to return to,’ and goes back to the White Base kids. Plus, Char and Amuro fought outside the context of the war, and within that, there was a moment where Char said, “Then become my comrade!” Though I did think, ‘Not now, man’ (laughs). It’s the way it concludes on a personal note that gets to me.

jesus christ so this SEED won't be any better than the other SEEDs I take it
THE NEW WORKS THEME EXPLORES THE RIGHT TO LOVE AND BE LOVED

―――In SEED, the main characters had a clear intention to stop the war.

In SEED, there was an assertion that one “shouldn’t fight.” But with DESTINY, it’s more of an ironic question: “Is it truly wrong to fight?” DESTINY serves as a counter-argument to SEED. It doesn’t denounce the act of fighting. Hope for tomorrow, the drive to achieve one’s desires—they come through struggle, through battle. At the time, people were beginning to say we should stop ranking in races or stop competing altogether. A blanket rejection of anything connected to war and conflict felt misguided to me. When you only see justice from one perspective, it inevitably ends up skewed. There are many people’s sense of justice, and you must acknowledge them to some degree to coexist. I really like how Moonlight Mask refers to being an “ally” of justice, not “justice” itself. There’s a pause, a restraint—something fundamental in hero narratives. The idea that it doesn’t claim absolute righteousness is appealing.

―――The SEED TV Series gained a new fanbase.

This movie is aimed mainly at long-time fans. To put it bluntly, I’m making what I want to watch.

―――Is it an antithesis to the previous two works?

Well… it’s more of a connection. Essentially, I’m asking, “Is there a prerequisite to loving someone?” Do those deemed unworthy remain unloved? The right to love and the value of being loved—that’s the essence I’m hoping to encapsulate in the story.

I found it, I'm gonna withhold judgement since I have no sense of the reliability of that translation, and that does seem like a colossally weird opinion such that it seems quite possible it's poorly translated. Fukuda is definitely kind of a dumbass though, he did direct Seed.

I consulted with my much more gundam-headed nerd friends who know about the translator of that interview, and it sounds like they're a reliable translator at least (opinions about them other than their reliability aside), and Fukuda is just known to generally be a kind of astoundingly media illiterate dumbass for being a writer/director, that "it's only politics if it says something I don't like" kind of stupid.

Reminder that Seed Destiny has an episode where Shinn literally liberates a slave labor camp run by alliance forces and the authorial voice of the show paints this as an Anakin Skywalker*-esque step down teh path of darkness for Shinn.

I sometimes feel like the more sound member of hte writer/director pair was his late wife, and while he can certainly make product, Fukuda’s sensibilities for political themes is just utterly utterly screwed

*Because that is the other thing about Fukuda, is that while OG Gundam definitely is taking shit from Star Wars, along with the rest of the elements its borrowed from 70s SciFi and Space Opera predecessors, Fukuda just goes into those elements even harder, complete with the fact Durandal’s command room at series end is literally using elements of the Emperor’s throne room from Return of the Jedi

There’s some people who will point to old Tomino interviews where he says things like he wrote the original Gundam to be in a place that was neither left nor right wing politically.

And all I can do is remember supposed interviews going around during G-Reco where he was claiming G-Reco was a story about how what a dumb idea orbital elevators are, a comment given about a show explicitly about multiple groups stepping up military rearmament after centuries of no wars and having forgotten what war is actually like and learning first hand its horrors as they all effectively play at war while the reality of warfare slowly dawns on them.

Just, coincidentally, during a major push by the LDP to try and amend the constitution regarding Article 9.

Japanese creators are almost always going to lean towards "haha I have no message I'm just a humble artist but if someone wants to draw meaning from my work then I'm glad" even on stuff that is positively beating you over the head with its themes. There's the occasional writer who just doesn't give a shit but for the most part they never admit to anything.

I've mostly given up on ever reading author interviews because they all end up like

Pretty much. Like the Politics of Seed are pretty clear, and really fucking bad
    j4fq7kghvpvr.jpeg

Actually this here is an amazing bit of why Fukuda’s “Gundam is about personal relationships, not politics” shit is bad, because Shinn’s arc for this entire series is basically “What if Kamille Bidan was Anakin Skywalker” and his climax is literally breaking down in tears as his Palpatine equivalent’s genocidal super weapons collapse and explode.

Then the next time you see him it’s WELCOME ABOARD TO THE PROTAGONIST CLUB SHINN

It's really obvious that the studio didn't think they'd get another season with this show after the first one. They skipped stuff to rush an "ending" of sorts and now they had to go back and fill in those parts with the heroes because they're actually big players in the story as a whole. I get that, it's just very awkward pacing.

Back to the present story next week though. And the next bit with Makoto is pretty enjoyable.
