For fun, I also decided to check into the Bravern OP again and there is some stuff put in plain view there about Smith that I really wonder where that’s going or if it backs up my theory from the past couple weeks:
So in the opening, we see a scene where Smith is seemingly falling deep in some kind of aetheric space, which, if you notice closely before the shot cuts transitions to what looks like a shot of outer space nebulae. When it cuts, we focus on a blinding light, which takes the form of some kind of angelic being with elongated arms and legs (which at first I thought were more of a tail, but I think on closer look you can see they’re two legs, just drawn in a dramatic POV Obari tends to love using, where the upper torso of hte subject juts out towards the camera and the legs are flung back behind; it’s akin to a very stylized fish eye effect).

Then, Smith reaches out his hand, and you can see armor start to form around it as he gazes on in awe.

    yz5fx49zuhsp.jpeg

Interesting to note here: it’s hard to make out when you watch it normally, but Isami has some kind of Hero Show shirt on. I cropped it here and flipped it so it’s more legible; one shows the hero design more clearly, the other is a frame later where we lose detail on the hero but can make out the bottom of the title katakana:

    uwcpojkyki1v.jpeg

So again I ask: Is Bravern Smith? Somehow having formed a bond/union of his own with this angelic entity? Is that why Bravern says that letting him pilot would be impossible for him? While not 1:1, the hero on the shirt and the angelic entity both seem to have elements of Bravern’s design, and Bravern’s personality seems like a comically exaggerated version of what an overeager hero/brave fan might model themselves as in attempting to emulate the heroes they loved watching on TV.

bravern is definitely trying to do a lot all at once. i'm sure all this setup will explain things eventually (I feel like there's a lot of backstory for isamu that we don't have yet as well)

    as to your conjecture lanz,
bravern and smith do have different VAs, but I don't think that 100% rules out your theory.

metallic rouge (ep 3) is still doing the bones "show not tell", but they did at least explain a bunch this week by proxy
    poor juval though

Episodes 3 & 4 of Delicious in Dungeon down. What a great time. 4 is quite a bit longer, like they had two stories to tell but couldn't quite make it into two separate episodes, but also didn't want to cut anything. And that's fine because it was really nice bringing cultures together like that with food.

The living armor though.. just perfect.

So far all the episode titles have been the same as the chapters they're from, so you can see exactly which ones make up an episode. That's neat.

    E1 - chapters 1, 2
    E2 - chapters 3, 4, 5
    E3 - chapter 6, 7 (it's a two-parter, Living Armor Part I & Part II)
    E4 - chapter 8, 9

It's a two-cour anime, 26 episodes, so I've got an inkling that chapter 49 is the final one. (It's a really good chapter.)

The Go Nagai Museum’s Great Mazinger statue survived the Wajima Fire

It’s sappy but somehow I’m always a sucker for symbolism like that, like Kamen Rider Ichigo’s statue in Ishinomaki back during the typhoon in 2011:

I giving it about 90% chance; the person in question was tweeting about going to the advance screening tonight in (I think) Shinjuku, including the pop up display/gunpla shop they’d set up by the theatre

Also shots are coming out now from those collectible booklets they distribute at these Roadshow events which confirms another of their spoilers about a previously unrevealed MS in the movie

The translator I mentioned before found a Chinese blog(???) of someone who saw it tonight and…

    …yep, that’s Gundam Seed alright.

    Summary within:
NOTE: TAKE WITH A GRAIN OF SALT, I’M PARSING THIS FROM A SUPER DETAILED CHINESE BLOG

The opening scene showed the Orb’s COMPASS Team intervening in a conflict, with the “FREEDOM” song at full volume as it massacred the enemies. Kira dominates the battlefield. The team consists of Kira, Shinn, Agnes, and three others. Shinn apparently complains that Kira charged ahead in the name of freedom and justice, while the rest were assigned to the rear. He feels distrusted despite joining COMPASS because of Kira. Luna reassures him, but Agnes mocks him and suggests he isn’t worthy of the Immortal Justice.

The Millennium and Archangel ships reunite, with warm greetings all around among old friends, though Kira seems quite troubled. The story shifts to Lacus. Lacus says she wants to fight together, leading to the formation of COMPASS, but now that she’s head honcho, the two rarely have time together. After a meeting, Lacus finally has the time to be with Kira, so she prepares a lavish dinner, only for Kira to call and say he won’t make it since he’s developing a pack.

Kira returned home late and saw Lacus asleep on the sofa, waiting up for him. He puts a blanket over her. He sits down and begins a frustrating investigation into Gilbert’s Destiny Plan. Lacus wakes up sometime later and sees Kira asleep. She does the same to him with a blanket but is quite worried seeing the Destiny plan on his computer.

As she was dreaming, she saw Kira falling into darkness, and there was nothing she could do. The next day, Kira and Lacus go on a romantic motorcycle ride and picnic. Lacus mentions an invitation from the Foundation nation, and Kira says they should go. Once they are there, they meet with their prime minister/premier (Orphee?), though his subordinates (the Knights?) are dismissive towards Kira and the others. Lacus and Orphee share a moment of psychic connection when their rings touch.

Meanwhile, Foundation’s queen (Aura) is surrounded by loyal subjects. During a visit to their training grounds, Shura fights Liu in a sword duel and wins. The crowd eggs Kira on to fight, but he’s mocked for his lack of swordsmanship. Shinn steps in but is quickly disarmed and nearly defeated by Shura (he points the sword at his neck, nearly killing him). Orphee’s comments about Shinn being a “freedom killer” anger Kira.

After a reception, Orphee takes Lacus outside to talk privately. Lacus starts to feel manipulated by Orphee, who shares his vision of a peaceful world with her. However, she hallucinates seeing Kira while with him and rejects his advances, which Kira witnesses, mistakenly thinking there is something between them. Agnes confesses her feelings to Kira, who rejects her. Agnes, heartbroken, attempts to force herself on Kira in a scene reminiscent of Fllay’s. Lacus, who happened to be bringing food, overhears this and runs away.

Kira noticed the food and knew Lacus had been there, so he went to look for her. He runs into Orphee, who flat-out tells him he’s unworthy of Lacus. He tells Kira that he’s utterly useless for anything other than fighting. Once there was peace in the world, he’d just be dead weight and how could he possibly hold her with his blood-stained hands.

Later, COMPASS and Foundation staged a joint op to root out Blue Cosmos remnants, but it was a setup. Kira is mentally manipulated by Orphee, attacking the Eurasian Federation under the illusion of fighting remnants. The Eurasian Federation protests and Kira is attacked by the Black Knights. Since Kira begins attacking, Orphee uses this opportunity to accuse COMPASS of betrayal. He orders the Black Knights to attack Kira. The Freedom is severely damaged. The Black Knights had advanced tech that immunized them against beam weapons.

Shinn’s SEED mode activates and he tries to intervene, but several Black Knight block his path. Liu stealthily captures a Federation base and launches nuclear missiles. Luna intercepts one missile, but another changes course and escapes. Shinn, meanwhile, is being crucified in battle. Completely overpowered and on the verge of defeat, he narrowly escapes from his cockpit, only to be rescued by Hilda in a critical moment.

The Archangel is also under heavy attack. Mwu attempts a rescue but fails. The Archangel is forced to make an emergency landing, and its crew desperately flees. A Black Knight rushes to the bridge and fires directly at it. Without the Freedom to save them, the Archangel explodes, marking the end of its legendary journey.

Kira is cornered and severely beaten by Agnes, who has turned against him out of hatred born from love (unsure of this). Just then, Athrun swoops in to save the day. He battles Shura, managing to hold his own despite the intense situation.

Back on the Millennium, Luna is lying in bed, frustrated by Shinn’s absence. Mayu’s phone is nearby. During all this chaos, Lacus is basically “imprisoned” by Orphee, who stirs up an internal rebellion in the PLANTs (?). He presents a variant of the Destiny Plan, suggesting that those who comply will prosper and those who resist will perish. Lacus meets with Aura, who insists that she and Kira are perfect for one another. Lacus, disturbed by the proposal and thinking of Kira, refuses.

Kira and the others hide in a secret base near where he had his fateful duel with Athrun. Stressed, they plan their net moves. Athrun discovered that Foundation is developing something beyond Coordinators that can even influence people’s minds. Kira becomes apathetic, thinking Lacus has betrayed him, and decides to give up. This infuriates Athrun, who punches him in frustration. Kira, being a strong Coordinator, fights back against Athrun, but neither lands a hit. Shinn tries to intervene but the two gang up on him.

After the fight, Kira regains himself. The group decides to take on Foundation, but they lack mobile suits and ships. Luckily, Cagalli has two new shiny suits ready for them. Shinn is also thrilled to see the Destiny again.

The crew disguised themselves as fanatic fans to hijack the Millennium. However, the captain was well-prepared, just waiting for Kira’s return. Shinn, wearing a mask, attempted to attack Luna as a bluff, but Luna quickly overpowered him.

Back at Foundation, Lacus keeps resisting Orphee’s advances. Enraged by this, he attempts to force himself on Lacus. But, Lacus says something like, “The Lacus you love isn’t me,” which breaks Orphee.

The Millennium launches from Orb, Orb navy joins them, ceremoniously missing every shot they take. Orphee threatens to wipe out Orb (some super weapon, but I can’t tell the name, sorry). Cagalli is panicked, so Kira taunts Orphee. Foundation gets frantic and orders an attack on the Millenium instead. The ship manages to dodge and makes it out into space. Yzak and Dearka show up, fighting with their new Duel/Buster suits with METEOR systems.

Apparently, Shiho has some speaking lines? Meanwhile, Kira and Athrun hack into Foundation’s systems, penetrating the base. They find Lacus struggling with Ingrid (she has her at knifepoint). Cue standoff, Lacus released. Orphee learns that Lacus has been freed, so he directs all his anger at Orb. He fires whatever super weapon, but Mwu zips in and blocks the giant beam blast, uttering his making the impossible possible line again.

Kira and Athrun swap machines. Kira engages with Shura. Orphee joins in against him, and the two exchange barbs. Athrun comes back to save Kira (his Justice emerges from the Z’Gock it was hiding in). Meanwhile, things go on, Lacus shows up with the new backpack, declaring her unwavering will to be with Kira. The movie reaches its climax, new backpack activates and is pretty much immune to all attacks and wipes out most of Orphee’s forces.

Shunn and Luna recharge one anothers suits, tell one another they love them. One of the Black Knight’s attempts to attack, but Shinn manifests an image of Stella as a distorted spirit (big menacing teeth and all) and turns the tables. The Black Knights are defeated. Luna defeats Agnes.

Athrun thinks of Cagalli, takes out Shura. Aura dies at Mwu’s hand, going down with the ship/superweapon/whatever. Shinn and Luna dismantle the superweapon. In the final showdown, Kira defeats Orphee yet spares him, allowing him to have some last words. Despite this, he’s overwhelmed by Kira and Lacus’s love and chooses to die along with Ingrid.

Movie ends with Kira and Lacus finally alone walking hand in hand on the beach. They have their long-awaited kiss. In the end scene, it pans to the beach with the normal suits wrinkled on the sand, with Kira and Lacus standing side by side naked – near the inactive Strike Freedom.

Are you kidding me with this “bloodstained hands” shit?

Kira “Never Kill-em-at-all” Yamato? The one pilot in this series who probably has the lowest kill count of any single character and has multiple machines specced out specifically to miraculously every mobile suit on the field?

Just finished up Faraway Paladin. Perfectly cromulent show.
The dragon fight was two episodes too long, but at least it got interesting. Stagnate showing up and helping in her way was pretty fun and really made me like her a lot. She's bad, I know, but the character is fun. Also I like that the show is left in a way that has some hooks for future adventures, but otherwise really wraps up.

Because it does not feel like one that's going to get another season. But I'll be happy to be proven wrong.

It’s a movie most people here likely won’t be able to see in any form, let alone legally, for probably almost a year given Bandai’s handling of regarding Gundam film releases, and where it has currently shown no indication of localizing the film despite its announcement six months or more ago following the finale of G-Witch, and folks may want still to know what’s in it given the indefinite nature of an official release outside of Japan without having to wait until Bandai deems to finally distribute the film internationally

The last film we got readily from Bandai was when they partnered with Netflix to release Hathaway during the height of the pandemic, while, as another example, the G-Reco films have been limited to simply offering the shared-region Japanese, $100+ dollar Blu-Rays on RightStuf (now the CR Shop)

I don't think there's enough material for another season currently, unfortunately? I want to say the LN's at five books, and they've covered four of them now, but.

But yes, Stagnate was an absolute delight throughout the second season. Super well-written.

The more I think about it the second Gurren Lagann movie just doesn't work that well for me. Like the ending still rules and they ways they expanded on it are both dumb and great but the first movie really does just have the lion's share of the emotional beats.
Opening the movie with the final fight with Lord Genome devoid of context and truncated kinda sucked the wind out of it but I'm not sure how they could have done this differently. Like say if they cut out the 4 generals and closed the first movie with the lord genome fight then your opening to the second movie is a bunch of lunkheads trying to play civ, which as much as I love that section of the show it is not exactly the most exciting.

Anyways, now I want a core drill again.

IIRC the author has only written 5 books, and has had health issues and writer's block, and we've seen... 4 books worth of content, plus at least one of the stories in book 5 got adapted as well? So yeah, we're not getting another season any time soon, sadly.

Which is a shame, because it's a fine show and enjoyable fantasty romp, and i could do with more like that.

Fern: Wins before the OP even starts by casually turning up the heat.

Frieren: Is being sorely underestimated here I think. I'm half expecting the next episode to have Monocle guy stuck on defense because Frieren starts shooting at his entire team at once, and the one who ran away isn't nearly good enough to deal with that.

I think so? Though if it had that much benefit, you'd think that all mages would constantly be suppressing their mana. I think the only thing that has been directly told to us that increases it is living a really long time, and winning whatever genetic lottery determines that kind of thing.

Doubt it. Fern seems to be a prodigy in general, and she's just been practicing magic from a young age (and had two excellent teachers). Frieren is over a thousand years old, and age directly correlates to mana capacity it seems (or rather, time spent using magic). I don't think we've seen anything near what Frieren's max output looks like, aside from just her aura being ludicrous if she stops suppressing it. Fern dug a giant furrow into the earth with her barrage, so you kind of have to figure Frieren can make that look tame.
