For clarity, Funimation was $54.99 a year, Crunchyroll was and is $99.99 a year. Crunchyroll isn’t raising their prices (though they almost definitely will within the next year), but anyone switching from Funi to Crunchyroll is going to be paying more.

Actually, I'm not sure you CAN get Crunchyroll for $99.99 a year now. I just looked around both the site and through general searches, they're only offering month-to-month, which means two things. That Twitter post that everyone is reacting to is more full of crap than I initially thought (how dare they offer this high price [that they don't offer anywhere]) AND they could have made it worse if they had any idea what they were talking about, because the annual price (added up from the month to month charges) is $120, not $100. If someone can find a way to pay for annual (not an annual plan that you already have running from the past), please prove me wrong, that would be a better price overall.

I mean, this took me literally five seconds to find

    94amv8tth53h.png

So if you're already paid up, it won't show you that. I went through support and they actually said to cancel completely and then you can choose different plans. It's... very strange to run things that way, to say the least.

A friend of mine talks about this a ton, how Crunchyroll’s subscription system is the most obtuse, counterintuitive nightmare he’s ever come across on any streaming service

Okay, so when I started paying for Crunchyroll, there was Fan (free), Mega Fan (paid, $9.99), and Ultimate Fan (paid, $14.99). I signed up with a new email just to be able to check how it works now (since they deliberately hide this screen once you start paying). Now the tiers are Fan (paid, $7.99) and the other two are the same. You can get Fan annual billing for $80 a year (so where did that Tweet's number come from? a different region?), but not Mega Fan. The main difference is the number of streams, I guess? Since there's a discount on the Fan annual plan, I might have to seriously consider going after it, but yeah. This website is bizarrely bad, especially considering it's like... the biggest anime focused service in the West.

Crunchyroll's site literally just stopped working for me a few months ago, just will not accept my password at all, nor will it let me sign up for a new account or even acknowledge a password change request or anything.

Eventually had to get my bank involved to put a hold on the annual reup charge (which theoretically should be coming up in March, but lmao fuck that).

hey remember when Funimation bought out Australian distributor madman and therefore also their streaming website AnimeLab? The animelab which had the best webapp in the entire fucking business? And then they shut it down and merged everything with the Funi streaming platform and made zero use of the animelab webapp tech and so the only streaming platforms left had shit websites?

    yeah

    fucking hate this shit

So I read through all (that's out) of Story About Buying My Classmate Once a Week. It does go into a bit of a holding pattern around the 2/3's mark for a while, but feels like things are moving again. I always like stories that are more about building a relationship than a will they/won't they, and this does a lot of that.
I think I said this before but I like that their relationship starts out with just them alone in a room, while pretending they don't know each other outside of it. And then as they gradually start to get a bit healthier they start expanding their world outwards, and even hanging out with each other's friends together, which in the early part of the story would've been just impossible for them to handle. Although they're also a lot less subtle than they think so most of their friends seem like they at least have some suspicions. It's kind of a pet peeve of mine when romance stories will pull the reverse dynamic, "ooh our relationship is so great and sexy that we don't need any others" thing, whereas this story's exploring how making their relationship public is another step up in their own intimacy and openness with each other.

I really like the story's whole vibe of like, characters who mostly know what they want, but they're carrying so much trauma that all their instincts are guiding them to do things that take them away from that. Miyagi's not just like a cool anime latchkey kid archetype, where she doesn't get dragged down by lame-o parents and gets to do what she wants, she's got really severe abandonment issues and anxiety. Sendai's subtler about her damage but she's fucked up too. So they have to keep setting all these definitions and rules and time limits on their relationship to keep themselves from freaking out, and then graaaadually working towards breaking that stuff down.

... Which is pretty funny considering the story starts with a schoolgirl kissing another girl's feet in chapter 2.

Someone else mentioned it but the $54.99 price was for an annual subscription to Funimation. Maybe even a legacy price. There's just one email going viral that the news sites are circulating.

I saw the $54.95 and freaked out that I had been overpaying $40 every year but I guess I've been overpaying only $16 a year... definitely gonna switch to an annual plan though.

I always liked how CR's app avoided a lot of junk from other streaming services. There weren't obnoxious things like auto-playing previews, or forced leading into episodes like Netflix, or forcing you to try and skip OPs/EDs... and now they've added both those things. They can all be disabled, but still.

It's still one of the less irritating apps, but the negative influences are stacking up.

As for the loss of RightStuf, yeesh, pants on head stupid. I've used CR once since, and probably won't again. Even the packaging was inferior.

    Given the OP, Bravern
I think the idea might be that Bravern was Smith, but is also whatever that angelic being that looks like an extremely stylized Bravern-esque white light as a new being. Kind of like the kind of situations where Ultras and humans fuse in Ultraman, but instead of maintaining separate identities, they become a gestalt new being

Crunchyroll's everything is incredibly bad. Navigation in the app is miserable. All subs and dubs are represented as separate season entries and often you have to wait for the title to scroll to see what the language is. They recently added the option to set your preferred language settings so it will automatically play the right one when you click on a new series but I've still never seen it work right. I always get like, German or Hindi.

Reminds me of something that actually did happen in FGO with another near immortal character who was alive when a particular hero was and got to see how history changed them.

I do not believe so, at least not as far as I can recall from the manga (edit: to be clear, this is only within the context of what's on the pages, its been inferred she's had fights against other mages outside the timeframe of the comics but the outcomes aren't exactly clear)
