Partway into the Egypt Arc of Stardust Crusaders my opinion is that some of these fights did not need to be two-parters. There have been some hype episodes and funny encounters, but it's gone from "oh shit, a two-parter, this fight will be serious" to padding for time.

That explanation has always felt pretty unsatisfactory to me since this trend is as far as I'm aware, pretty unique to Japanese media. You'd think if that was the case, you'd see a similar trend in other pulp media instead of puns, wordplay, and one-liners.

Have you seen the titles for books in the Kindle store? It's practically the same thing, only instead of plot hooks they're dubious bestseller claims and vague fluff statements trying to sell you someone's NaNoWriMo project.

They are trying to pitch to people with only a line of text, and it just gets weirder when placed into a book

Just to really show how it is, this is the web novel site that a lot of series start on before getting picked up by a publisher(including: Konosuba, Bofuri, Slime Isekai, Log Horizon, and others)

    https://syosetu.com/

Now, it's all in Japanese so I doubt most people here can read it, but you can see that the home page is just a bunch of titles as text links with ads on the sides. The "What's popular" rankings are the same, just split by genre.

If a reader goes actively searching, they can get a short one paragraph summary and a list of tags for series, but that's all you get. No cover, no art, nothing else.

So yeah, authors are actively trying to game the home page and rankings lists with the really long titles.

So, I started on Haruhi Suzumiya (broadcast order) with my kids (teenagers by now), and they're not having problems keeping up at all. It helps that they've watched a bunch of other anime before so they could tell something was deliberately not quite right with episode 00 (also my older kid is doing AV at high school so could really spot the 'tells' for amateur videography). I did give them a heads-up that the other episodes wouldn't be in the obvious order, so when we got to the first Boredom one they were ready for things to have just jumped forwards past a bunch of bits of plot that we haven't seen yet.

I hadn't watched it myself since the first time around a long while ago, so it was neat knowing what's coming up and spotting the little things that haven't been explained yet, as well as the bigger ones.
At one point during the baseball game, Haruhi is wondering if she should put Asahina's hair in a ponytail, then she looks over at Kyon and changes her mind, which makes sense given this is (chronologically) the episode after Melancholy pt.6 which is the other ponytail reference. (as well as the one in Sighs 4, I guess -- that one I did spot the first time through)

The manchild who owns Twitter is trying to make it a streaming service as part of his "everything app" push.

I don't talk about anime with anyone but an anime fan. I say I watch it or read it if it's relevant to do so but I don't mention it otherwise.

I dunno I like telling people about some.of the good ass animes that are interesting stories if they don't mind the medium, which is never shonen or isekai but there are animes that id recommend to any one who wants a good to show watch (Pluto)

In general I tend to find the whole "anime is so weird, glowing anime recommendation only 90% caveats, blah blah" stuff in the internet kind of... I dunno, vaguely amusing?

Like I would consider something like Yurucamp or K-On or whatever to contain significantly less "bullshit" than like, your average live action american shown on tv. It's just more familiar to the people that post on the anglophone part of the internet. A good story will generally have people who have a modicum of an open mind be ready to engage it where it's at.

I mean hell, right this past week one of my coworkers, who had never watched anime beyond watching some DBZ as a kid (because, you know, I'm in Spain, an overwhelming majority of people within one generation of me on either side watched DBZ as kids), had another of my coworkers get him to watch Attack on Titan and he's currently absolutely hooked and has apparently devoured almost all of it in ten days, and it's not like AoT is exactly low on what people might consider "anime bullshit" - or being real, even that much of a good story.

I was a bit harsh with the no isekai or shonen IDs recommend once I knew the person enough but if I can't convince my mom to watch Pluto I won't gonna convince the large amount of people I chat with at work to do the same

A old coworker I saw at a tore I left years ago told me "yo bro thanks for the metal band recommendation. They became my fave" and I was like hell yeah I love veil of Maya but I don't remember doing that's by id deffo did

So in short anime is a extreme cas e not case basis it's not my first toss out

Two of the 20 year old girls at work met for the first time at a meeting a few days ago, started making small talk, and like the third question they asked each other was, "what's your favorite anime?

A lot of us nerds of an older age - myself included - are maybe still a little too in the mindset of high school 20+ years ago. Anime's mainstream as hell now, even the weird stuff.

Since in January I read the entirety of The Ideal Sponger Life light novels, along with a manga that also involved characters from a fantasy world interacting with modern day Earth stuff (name of manga in spoilers since it's kind of a twist that it happens)...
    Tales of Wedding Rings

...so I decided to continue the theme and read another series that had the same thing. I started the light novels for Welcome to Japan, Ms. Elf and I'm currently about halfway through the third one.

Sadly, it's not as good. The world-building so far isn't very good, and it uses the video game systems as part of the fantasy world which I'm usually not a fan of. They travel back and forth between Japan and the fantasy world, but I have trouble caring about the half of the book that's in the fantasy world.

Unfortunately, the Japan half also suffers from some problems. For one, it's constantly saying Japan is the best at everything (mainly food, but also any other topic when it gets brought up). The other is that Mariabelle, the title elf, is constantly described as so cute that she entrances every single person they encounter. It's not quite as bad as Rent-a-Girlfriend describing people reacting to whatshername, but it's still a bit annoying.

The second book also added a second woman from the fantasy world who's traveling to and from Japan with them. Though to their credit, so far it does not seem to be going the harem route and the second woman mostly seems to be their sassy friend who's trying to push the main two into become an official couple.

However, looking at future book covers, I see there is a third woman, so no idea how that will go.

I wish I had more Ideal Sponger Life or (spoiler manga) to read.

You know how a lot of isekai (and some non-isekai fantasy) uses RPG stats? I've noticed that sometimes in those adventurers and/or monsters are given letter grades, which seems very video game-y, but I don't think I've ever played a game that does that and I'm wondering where it comes from.

I think maybe Monster Hunter does that, though I'm not very familiar with it.
