Apothecary Diaries was intense this week. I was holding my breath.
The ending was so frustrating. WALK FASTER!!! CALL A DOCTOR. SHE'S BLEEDING OUT YOU NEED TO RUSH!!!!

At the same time, no one was going to interrupt Jinshi at that point.

apothecary diaries 19 (like real spoilers)
I'm assuming at this point that jinshi is technically the current emperor's son, but born when the emperor was still crown prince with ah-dao, and got swapped for the previous emperor's baby, so he's playing the role of the current emperor's younger brother.

how convoluted. wonder if jinshi actually knows his origins

Yeah, it was very "carrying the fallen hero to their final resting place" rather than "I need to get my savior/I-wish-she-was-my-girlfriend to a doctor pronto, but slow enough so I don't aggravate the wounds".
(Someone in the AD community discord described it as "they having their kdrama moment".)

    (real spoilers)
It would have almost succeeded at building the "Is Maomao dead?" tension if not for the next episode preview featuring her lively face as the first frame. (:V)

AniMenagerie S finished up Healer Girl tonight, and that might just be peak Iyashikei right there. Down to literally being all about healing and comforting people.

Just an incredibly comfy, relaxed watch, that also frequently made me cry. Probably not a great groupwatch candidate though, we realized, as about half of the group had little to no interest in the show. And it was also so relaxing that there were long stretches with nothing to react to or discuss, because we were all just enjoying the visuals or songs.

Also, the two main adults in that show are the most married two women have ever been in an anime, it's incredible.

So, Jiangshi X ends on a frustrating note, as the idea of switching from a traditional battle shonen to a Journey to the West style adventure sounds like a fun setup...and we're done.

I've only watched OSP's Journey to the West videos rather than reading the actual thing, so maybe my idea of what Journey to the West is like is skewed by that, but I think those two styles of story are very close together.

Given that Dragon Ball started as a Journey to the West parody (remember, Son Goku is the Japanese translation of Sun Wukong), you're not wrong.

Other stuff from this week's shonen jump:

_Two On Ice_ needs to settle down a bit, good grief. (I would say it needs to chill out but that sounds like a bad pun re: ice)

    _Green green greens_
is pulling out the Princess Bride combat twist? I don't play golf so I don't know if it even makes sense, but on the other hand I laughed when it happened, so fair enough. I still have no idea how long this will last, but it's still entertaining, at leas.

_One Piece_: "If that's true, then physics as we know it is dead" -- why would this particular chapter be the one where we need to start worrying about realism? and also the person that said that has not exactly been obeying the laws of physics themselves.

(edit: I guess the line is "physics as we know it", which is "we, the people in the world of One Piece", not 'we, the readers", so it's reasonable for physics to be pretty, uh, loosey-goosey about stuff)

_Dear Anemone_ feels very familiar; the first-chapter concept of "a place where something bad happened recently and now monsters are there" is also the locale (for the first three chapters, at least) of Astro Baby, and the artwork/style of monsters reminds me of Wild Strawberry. Maybe it has something new to say, but so far it seems pretty recycled.

    _Akane-Banashi_:
it still felt an awful lot like it was leading up to one of the "we're going to stop here even though the story isn't done" endings, but then the last couple of pages seem like it's just setting up something going forwards. Also, the dialog from those pages could be dropped into a _lot_ of other shonen manga plotlines and would seem completely appropriate there; I know akane-banashi is very like a lot of other battle manga but about rakugo, but the wording there is remarkably applicable to all sorts of power-up-ing.

anybody reading Shadow Eliminators? it's a little pretty standard shounen kinda Yuyu Hakusho meets Bleach by way of Paranoia Agent but not as good as any of those things, but this weeks "monster of the week" was a decently horrific reveal, i wouldn't be mad if it stuck around and found it's footing. probs not gonna see north of 30 chaps I imagine just based on the SJ hit rate of late.

Fern's telling her that there's three chests, they're all bound to be mimics.
Then she finds gold, but wants to keep going, then she finds a grimoire, and Fern's like "we're good, let's go", but Frieren's like "no, let's go for the third too!", which is, of course, a mimic.

    "Scary! Scary!"
"Frieren, is it possible you're doing this on purpose?"

To be fair she's not actually in any danger. Either the person with her pops her out or she does it herself via Extreme Violence.

The mimics themselves don't seem inclined to actually bite down at any point, they just seem to hold their victim in place.

Maybe they actually eat something like insects, and biting large animals is incidental.

Not sure if this is cause for concern or not, but what I'm pretty sure is the oldest localization house in the business finally got bought out:

    https://www.crunchyroll.com/news/latest/2024/2/15/mediaocd-announces-acquisition-of-animeigo-home-video-business
In February 2024, MediaOCD, a post-production firm owned by Anime News Network founder Justin Sevakis, acquired AnimEigo's video distribution business. Woodhead and Ueki will stay on to assist in the transition and see existing projects to completion. After that, they plan to retire.

It's kind of sad to see, since AnimEigo is one of the reasons I got into anime(since I was a big Rumiko Takahashi fan, and their release of Urusei Yatsura had trailers for Bubblegum Crisis, and the rest is history...).

This is really a unicorn of a merger though, where nothing is going to work out sucking for the consumer.

The owners want to retire and they found a good person who is not just dedicated to running a good business but also shares the same passion and values that we would want to see in those businesses.

I started Diamond is Unbreakable and while I'm still in the establishing episodes I dig the small town vibes.

I also had heard that Savage Garden provided the ending song and I knew it had to be I Want You, that's a perfect fit if I ever saw one.
