Mission: Yozakura Family continues to be the weirdly best glow-up series from where it started out to where it is now.

The two big things they did were a) focus more on the action and less on the gags, and b) let Taiyo have actual agency - he winds up being a lot more interesting when he's affecting the plot, as opposed to plot happening to him.

Also, that one dude is really determined to attempt to waterboard literally everything, huh?

Like, am I the only one who thinks it's super weird how much they're trying to make a joke out of waterboarding?

    No, it's really weird.

As opposed to everything else in Bravern, which is quite normal.

So apparently Lulu’s are manufactured by the towers for use as fuel for the Deathdrives, and the Deathdrives are all fighting to fulfill a wish they have.

    This raises a couple questions:

    - Given Lulu’s medical exams turned up that she’s a normal human aside from her atrophied (or perhaps undeveloped is more accurate given what we know now?) digestive tract and a couple mysterious cybernetic implants (I remember the hand has one, but I feel like there was at least one more they mentioned? I could be wrong though), why are seemingly alien outpost towers generating seemingly normal human beings for this purpose?

    - The one Deathdrive, whose name I forget, this episode clearly seemed to have as his wish that he’d be exploded in a blaze of glory. Does this mean their group name of Deathdrive is quite literal in that they’re all seeing their own (ideal?) Death? Or is each one’s wish something else entirely from one another and it’s just a coincidence that the one whose wish we know was to die as a massive explosion in combat?

    - also how the heck does Superbia know about Zen Meditation?

I've been watching Delicious in Dungeon at bed, and last night, no new episode appeared. I forgot that they're releasing these things in a janky style. Guess I'll put it on the back burner (pun intended) until all 24 episodes have been released.

Gonna watch Nimona next (heard good things), but not sure what to view after that is done. Only have Netflix, so any recommendations?

Yes, I know @shoeboxjeddy. It's just that the 1/week format of regular TV has never applied to Netflix, which has almost always done the season dump format instead. I understand Netflix has to do it this way since the anime is being released on the fly (which is hard on the animators) and so I'm stuck dealing with the antiquated TV format.

It's not really antiquated. Dumps are terrible for long term conversation and development of fanbases etc - a trickle is a lot healthier. I honestly think batch dumps are pretty unhealthy in prompting binging etc too, which aint great.

And i say that as a preneial binger who's got too much fucking free time and can simply consume whole shows non stop if i feel like it.

Dumping vs Weekly also can have a huge effect on the impact of a series; something I've thought about about Puella Magi Madoka Magica(the original series) , or specifically the difference in perception amongst people who watched as it aired, versus people who watched well after it was finished.

As someone who watched it as it aired, much of what made Madoka so impactful(and a cultural anime milestone) was it's weekly format meant that things lingered. For a week, plot points were left hanging, uncertainty and twists were left unanswered, viewers were left to stew in their emotions, all waiting for the next episode to come out and provide answers and resolution; It meant people went online and talked about the series, speculate what could happen, what it made them feel, dive deep into the lore, and attempt to find meaning in the smallest of lines and details. There's a beautiful craftsmanship and showmanship in how it manages and manipulates viewer expectations, tailored to a once a week format. That is what I think engraved it so deeply into the anime fandom as an all time great.

In contrast, I find people who watch it now-a-days, well after it aired, tend to find it "good", but less impactful or "great" than those who watched it when it aired. And how could they not? One part of it is Madoka is now a known quantity; nobody goes in expecting a comfy Ume-Sensei magical girl series anymore(a beautiful misdirection the creators made, lost to time). But the other is that the series is out in it's completed form. People binge watch it, watching it multi-episode chunks. It denies the series' emotional daggers and venom time to do their work, doesn't let scenes festers in the viewers mind, and questions and twists find themselves answered almost immediately. It denies so much of the craftsmanship that the series loses more of it's power. It turns what was intense month long shared experience into an emotional five hour stroll. It just has less time to be impactful.

Sorry for a bit of a rant, but if you can't tell, I've thought a lot about how differences in time and viewing methods change perception of a series in regards to my favorite anime of all time.

I don’t often binge or watch things when they come out, so having everything there is just convenient. But I also understand I’m not the target demo for most things. I just enjoy being able to watch things at my leisure, so waiting for full seasons is ideal. It is what it is I guess.

Despite being a romance series, I think it actually manages to capture the struggle of sports better than most sports series do in terms of how sports fits into life and what loss and winning can actually mean, and how everyone (not just the protagonist) has hopes and dreams and stuff.

It's melancholy in ways shonen rarely is.

oh yeah, the whole bit recently
with Chinatsu processing her sadness and anger over losing a really important game because of an unpredictable accident was really well done

On the other side of the coin, however, are shows that are too slow for their own good feel much better when being able to watch multiple episode at once. I've watched a lot of shows where people bailed partway through a season because "nothing was happening" and had no issue with them because I could watch the whole arc in a day or two. There are positives and negatives to both ways of releasing shows.

I don't think I remember that mural from the manga, but it also doesn't seem out of place since it is the sort of thing you'd find in an ancient dungeon. All this mage combat is also very fun to watch, I like how there's a huge difference in fighting styles among all of them.

Also Fern getting overly protective of Frieren being hugged is funny.

I'm watching this with my kids who don't know what's coming, so to try and attempt to preserve that experience I've renamed all the chapters in season 2 so that instead of showing up as "Endless 8", "Endless 8", ... "Endless 8", they just show up as "S2E2", "S2E3", and so on; I'm curious about how many they'll put up with.

Fern pouting was great. Then hugging Fieren. "This one is mine." Loved everything about this episode.

Every time the mages fight and the animation bumps up is incredible. The elevated style is extremely consistent week to week.

Really liking Girl Meets Rock so far. The cast feel much more like real, shitty teens instead of your typical kawaii wholesome infantilized anime teen girls.
love that Rin is just shamelessly manipulating everybody to break up their current band and reform it with the folks she wants. None of that 4 friends form a band and have fun stuff, nope, Rin wants to be good and anyone that wants to just hang out and not try hard is getting cut.
