PV for the next episode of Frieren

    https://youtu.be/cC5b0mDNshs?si=q2mx51lcoLDabB0-
That scene with Serie and Frieren doesn't look familiar to me, I wonder if it's an anime original.

    Manga and anime stuff
No that was in the manga too. It's where Serie and Frieren are talking about Flamme's last wish and how in the next thousand years human mages will grow at an exponential rate, with Serie saying that if Frieren were ever to die at the hands of another mage it would probably be a human who does it.

I think that was one of the flashback conversations about Flamme and flower-growing magic. There's a lot of those

    Bravern this week holy shit
So that’s confirmation that there has been time shit involved via Knuth, as well as confirmation that the Deathdrive’s wish is, apparently as the name implies, to experience death, seemingly over and over again as even if their towers are destroyed, their main ship in orbit can revive them further to experience it again and again (while Knuth, apparently, desires to experience true death, seemingly as an erotic pleasure? And seems to have gotten her wish)

Knuth looks extremely close to the being of light Smith is reaching out to in the opening, and she expresses that she’s experienced a tryst with him that she’s relived time and time again by resetting time, so there’s more of what potentially connects Smith and Bravern.

And, as well, what appears that Smith may now be dead in the explosion that took out Knuth.

Definitely a show where you honestly don’t know what’s going to come next.

An interesting mix of characters there; some from ongoing series, at least one from a series that's done, and some I just don't recognise at all.

This is a game that would've been a massive slam dunk like 15 years ago. I'm watching this now and have zero idea who any of these characters are.

I don't think they're playing episodes of Summer Time Rendering on giant screens in the streets of Mexico while thousands of people lose their minds.

Super Robot Wars that ain't, I don't think the target demographic for any of those shows are interested in a D-tier SRPG.

Part of the issue is they’re not Weekly Jump, they’re Jump+ which is Jump’s online-only publication; so Kaiju, SPY x FAMILY, Chainsaw Man’s current part, etc. are published there (and hence why they don’t hit Sundays with the rest, may have biweekly schedules, etc.)

I’ve been meaning to read Heart Gear, but it’s slow since Viz only releases them with volumes instead of as they hit in Japan (which is the other issue with Plus series; in the SJ app, its very hit or miss as to just how those chapters get updated; some others like D.Gray-Man have similar issues where instead of hitting Monthly, Jump only adds them to the vault as volumes hit, which is kind of frustrating)

I think mangaplus has it coming out weekly as 'simulrelease', for what it's worth.

    Frieren 25
They really amped up the effects for this one.

Also lol at Kanne and Lewine in the background shots wrestling with each other. As they are wont to do.

In particular I really liked the bit during the magic duel where the shading makes it impossible to tell which is the real Frieren and which is the clone.

I rate them about equal but yeah it's insane there's two really good fantasy shows airing at once and neither has a whiff of isekai or RPG mechanics made literal

In a sane world Dungeon Meshi should be the best show out this year but it's not even close.

This week's episode did the "big foreshadowing to an already-expected cool moment" again, and it was so damn good.

agreed that they feel equal - I think watching new frieren and dungeon meshi eps back to back absolutely makes the experience. or, as the meme goes, don't pit them against each other, they're dating.

frieren feels meditative and introspective, meshi feels exploratory. frieren learns to process familiar situations with newly transformed core values. the meshi crew learns to thrive in different situations while still being driven by their same core values.

    another amazing week for both!

Burn The Witch #0.8 was excellent, to the point that it was almost a completely different series from the original OAV. Why didn't they start with that?

Fieren was already the top anime of Fall 2023 and all of 2023, if it takes the crown for Winter 2024 and all of 2024 it can retire as the undefeated champion. It might supplant FMA: Brotherhood for "widely considered best anime ever."

    Episode 25:
The way the animators weave planning dialogue, montages set to instrumentals, high octane sakuga action sequences, and flashbacks is superbly masterful. Each piece of the puzzle enhances each other piece with purpose and contributes to the whole episode's experience. Normally you might be jarred leaving such an excellent action sequence for a flashback so suddenly, but there's a narrative reason for each scene and the order they play in.

I can't speak to Meshi's adaption, but as a manga it blows frieren right out of the water and then some, and i seriously urge people to givei t a go. It's incredibly fucking good.

It's still early for Dungeon Meshi anime, but right now I'd put:
Frieren anime > Frieren manga, but
    Meshi manga > Meshi anime

Dungeon Meshi manga has the advantage of having a complete ending though.

I am 1000% certain that the authors of both Frieren and Dungeon Meshi would probably hate to see people directly comparing their works and trying to make statements about one being superior or whatever. idk why can't the two series just be friends lol

I don't think its totally fair to compare Frieren through ep 25 vs dungeon meshi through ep 9; they're both very good but one is a lot further along in its adaptation

honestly in a season of frieren vs delcious in dungeon vs the apothecary diaries, its close

That show is trash, but I do have to hand it to whatever translator came up with "Gushing over Magical Girls" as its English title. That's pretty brilliant.

    Or just into porn, really.

It is not my cup of tea at all but I'm hardly going to act all scandalized about what seems to be largely just softcore porn with humor in it from what I've heard people say about it?

In other news, caught up with the Apothecary Diaries manga, I believe. This remains some pretty solid stuff.

I think the biggest difference between Frieren and Meshi is that Frieren is still in progress with no end in sight and Meshi is a single contained story, told from start to finish. A rarity in the world of manga.

yes, when I'm saying comparing, I mean explicitly just the anime adaptations against each other, as its not fair to throw down between the two as they are atm. the manga is a whole nother kettle of fish

Re-found Red Ranger Adventurer again after missing updates for about a year.
Latest arc is actually way better than it has any right to be. Why is it working so well to apply tokusentai logic revolving around bonds and relationships to a fantasy isekai world's metaphysics?
