Frieren was absolutely incredible in every way, thoroughly satisfying from beginning to end, and a true delight I looked forward to every week.

I will certainly miss it (though I imagine a second season is forthcoming), and imagine it ascends to the pantheon of all time great anime. It's one you don't have to caveat at all when you recommend it, to boot! A rarity in every sense.

Hello Anime thread, can you suggest any sci-fi isekais?
I don't mean "Fantasy world via VR gaming" like SAO or similar, but actual giant mecha/star ship settings that real world people wind up in? It seems like it'd be a natural place to take the theme, but I haven't come across any. Granted, my anime experience is limited, but figured I'd ask the hive mind what I should be looking for.

Something where Bob, the general mecha enthusiast main character, gets run down by a horse drawn buggy and wakes up in Gundam or Evangelion (with the serial numbers filed off) or some other grim "War is hell... but, hey, cool robots" kind of setting?

There's Dual! Parallel Trouble Adventures, where a guy suddenly finds himself in a parallel Earth where giant robot fights between two competing governments are the norm for claiming territory. It's not really played as a war is hell though, more of a harem anime since it's the same universe as Tenchi Muyo.

I remember reading a manga where kingdoms use giant robots to fight constant battles, and a person's worth is based on how big their Giant Robot Pilot Number is. The protagonist, in true isekai fashion, has such a big number it rolled over the scale back to 1 and nobody noticed, so they thought he was trash and enslaved him. He broke out, got a giant robot, made some friends with giant robots, and started a mercenary company where they and their giant robots fight more giant robots in all these wars going on.

I remember one more but not enough details to be sure.

Edit: Oh. also Escaflowne might count

Usually isekais use their protagonist being such a big brain future person to take advantage of being transported to a fantasy world where everyone is a big idiot who doesn't know about smartphones or vaccines as the plot hook.

That doesn't seem as likely if they get transported to a future society where everyone is probably more educated than the protag.

I have read stories where primitive people were transported to future societies and used their big caveman strength and propensity for violence to succeed though.

hm yeah dunbine and escaflowne count for the mecha isekai aspect but they're more fantasy than sci-fi

I'm trying to think of an actual sci-fi setting. The only stuff that's coming to mind either wants to be science fantasy or starts as sci-fi then pulls a Star Ocean and suddenly All Fantasy.

Rayearth and Escaflowne are isekai with mecha, but fantasy settings.

Crest of the Stars/Banner of the Stars might be something you could look into, the MC is from that universe but a lower tech planet I believe, and gets thrust into spaceship royalty shenanigans.

Aura Battler Dunbine is also an option, but it's also in the same universe as Garzey's Wing...

    Does Orguss qualify?

    Maybe parts of it?

I feel like Stargate SG-1 is a different offshoot of portal fantasy compared to isekai's another world, but I base that on basically nothing. They generally gather data before going to other worlds, and the technology used to do so it better explored/better maintained than typical "I woke up in another life" style stories.

The movie, on the other hand, probably qualifies.

And I remember almost nothing from Universe, but they're traveling on a ship that isn't from their world already, so I feel like that's closer to fictional space exploration than other world fantasy.

    Frieren Episode 28
Denken, Fist of the Gramps Star: "You are already my grandchild."

I liked the detail that when Lehrner attacked Frieren with Zoltraak, he used the Anti-Human version (black) instead of the Anti-Demon version (white) we normally see everyone using.

Wonder if that "uwu" annoyed face is something that's just intrinsic to elves.

And when I saw Ubel walking alone during the post-credits scene I want to believe that Land ditched her by literally dispelling his clone right in front of her like that "peace out" meme.

About as perfect an adaptation as I could have ever asked for.

The TV series covered the first five novels, and the first movie covered the sixth and seventh novels. This looks to be covering the eighth and ninth novels.

I know zilch about this show, but the dub(and the vibe) seem super endearing. We need more couple arcs.

Buddy Complex is pretty much exactly that. Regular dude gets jumped by a girl in a mech and kidnapped to the future to do fightsies with robots.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=usxZLL95Dfw

I'd agree that Dual! also likely counts since the parallel world is all more advanced tech and giant robots.

How about people time traveling from like the sengoku era to the present day with giant robots, or mid-apocalypse? There's a few of those (eg Kuromukuro, Gibiate). Getting sent to the 'past' or fantasy world which is essentially the future with giant robots (eg Escaflowne, God Mazinger, El Hazard (kind of), etc) isn't too uncommon either. If you REALLY wanted to stretch it, you might say something like Aquarion and Aquarion Evol count as well. They're both mid alien invasions, but the protagonists are relative normies that get dragged out of their 'regular' lives into it, though Aquarion's protagonist is a literal feral Mowgli-like dude while the rest of the cast are more normies whose regular lives prior to the apocalypse are gradually revealed, and Evol's is more like just... Venice, but also X-Men and mechs, so neither are THAT normal.

    E:
Oh, right. There's also Muv Luv Alternative. Basically similar to Dual, but not wacky. Regular dude in modern regular world sent to parallel world that's in the middle of alien invasion with giant robots already invented or whatever. Not TECHNICALLY the future, but pretty much is. And definitely a war is hell kind of traumatic setting. Not so much robots are cool though. More... girls in skintight suits, because it's from a porn game.

There's also Bokurano. It's not really sci-fi setting but it does have giant robots, isekai, and a modern time period. Also the horror of war, because the whole thing is about how a group of literal kids find themselves drafted into an interdimensional battle for survival with other parallel Earths. Each kid is randomly chosen to pilot the robot for one battle and, regardless of if they win or lose, they die afterward. However, if any of them refuse to fight when it's their turn that means they lose and their Earth is wiped out of existence, which is what happens to any Earths they defeat as well. This continues until they've all gone, at which point the last survivor is transported to another Earth and hands off the robot to another group of people, continuing the cycle.

The focus of the story is less on the giant robot fights themselves though, and more on how all the kids choose to respond to their imminent deaths in the days before their fight begins.

It's got a banger of an OP too, highly recommend the full song and reading the lyrics.

I made a big post about the manga version of Tales of Wedding Rings a few months ago (mostly talking about something that won't happen in the anime unless it gets a season 3). The anime pretty much flew under everyone's radar though.

It's an ecchi harem, which isn't everyone's brand of tea. The Japanese title is a direct reference to the Japanese title for Lord of the Rings, and it has a bunch of allusions to LotR throughout (it's not trying to be an adaption or anything though).

The manga is still going, but it's been in it's epilogue for over two years at this point (not sure if that's also a LotR reference or not).

Can you give a quick sales pitch on why it might be worth checking out?

To reiterate, it is an ecchi harem isekai so that's not going to be for everyone. The main thing I liked it for was something that won't happen for a while, but before getting to that:
    • The basic synopsis is a guy follows his childhood friend/love interest when she says she's moving away only to find her disappearing in a beam of light. He hops in and finds himself in a fantasy world. Turns out she's the Princess of Light, and when monsters attack she gives her magic ring to the MC instead of the prince she was supposed to marry. This makes the MC the chosen hero who has to marry the five princesses and receive their rings to defeat Sauron the Abyss King. So his party has to venture out to the different kingdoms and meet all the princesses before journeying to Not-Mordor.
    • Fun characters. The Gandalf character is frequently making stuff up as he goes along or panicking instead of being more of the stoic all-knowing wizard. The prince who was supposed to be the chosen hero before the MC crashed the party actually turns out to be a complete bro to the MC instead of a jealous rival or anything like you'd expect. Then you have the princesses themselves.
    • While the elves are pretty much what you'd expect, some of the other fantasy races have some fun twists. The cat-people are tanned and muscular, dragons are water-themed instead of fire and look more like giant eels than lizards, and dwarves are a spoiler.
    • The manga has a few pages of journal entries at the back of each volume that tell you a bit more about the fantasy world. They aren't necessary, but they add some nice details.
    • The main guy and the Princess of Light both have complicated feelings about the harem situation because they've both been in love with each other for years and they have to work through that.
    • Playing "spot the LotR reference" is fun.
    • Same writer/artist as Dusk Maiden of Amnesia if you've ever seen that.

    For a few spoilery ones:
    • It is an ecchi so this may not be too surprising, but the characters actually start having sex later in the series (after a lot of blueballing by the author). It's something they talk about a lot and try to figure out while also being horny teenagers (one plot point is trying to figure out what to do when there's no contraceptives in the fantasy world).
    • Dwarves were wiped out hundreds of years ago in the last war against the Abyss King and nobody remembers what they looked like. While one of the rumored appearances is the conventional bearded appearance, the truth turns out to be that dwarves are the same thing as Dark Elves in this series. They were also extremely technologically advanced compared to everyone else before they got wiped out and some of their relics are still around.

    And the big spoilery thing:
They defeated the Abyss King a long time ago in the manga. After that the entire party moved back to Japan and it kind of became a reverse-isekai slice of life romcom. It's supposed to be wrapping up soon (the next-to most recent chapter finally had them return to the fantasy world), but it's on track for 1/3 of the entire series to just be this epilogue arc.

I don't know if any of that will ever get animated though. It'd be a season 3 that doesn't have action scenes, and I don't know if a studio would want to tackle the genre shift.
