So for whatever reason it's been a long time since I went through and bought the few OP/ED that I enjoy as mp3's, and I'm going through some lists, and am curious if anyone has watched Bastard or Shangri-La Frontier and has thoughts on them.

I've been watching Shangri-La Frontier. It's definitely one of the highlights of this season and the last. And that's despite the premise being a turn-off for me. "What if a video game was good? And one young man had the courage to PLAY that game?" That's seriously it. Like, even Bofuri's charm wore off after the first season (for me). Shangri-La even has some of my anime vr-game pet peeves: unique quests and power ups, and improbably charming npcs.

But Frontier just kinda makes up for that by being badass, all the time. I don't know why some anime exec thought they'd throw all their resources into THIS show but dammit it works. Our smug gamer protagonists have cool and funny banter while treking through beautiful environments. And really well animated fights. I don't think the show works unless the fights are cool but dammit, they are. And the bits where they play unpolished, glitchy, bargain-bin VR games are the real gem. Oh, and there's also a really badass surprise musical number, we'll just throw that in, no big deal.

The musical moment. Happens pretty late so I guess spoilers? But nooot really.

@Jragghen I've fallen thoruhgly in love with SLF and have been cherrily keeping up with the manga - Was delighted at the recent humble bundle that let me get a bunch of the volumes legit.

The main thing about SLF is from the manga up, it gets why games are fun. It's not afraid to show other games, and show why people love them. And you can see why people would fall in love wiht the world of SLF.

it also helps the characters are well written - for all that Sunraku is an inhuman game playing machine, he's also Very Human, he's not unstoppable, he gets hilariously owned (Bird poop incident), some of his strategies are just wacky, and it's played up that he's an absoloute werido.

It really also helps the stakes are low - it's practically slice of life, people just wanna have a really cool time in a game. Makes it a delight.

The low stakes also make it okay for Sunraku to take the L without putting anything in danger but his ego. So he can head to a zone with monsters way above his pay grade, try stupid strategies, and die repeatedly, because he might be a dodgemonkey in a one on one fight but crank that up to a dozen and it gets far riskier.

SLF has a really good understanding of what it is at its core, which is the story of people having fun, in various ways, playing a game. I also appreciate that, while this season has had an epic, multi-episode fight and some good drama and heartfelt moments, it is also willing
to spend the entirety of its second to last episode just focusing on Sunraku trying to cheese some 100+ level crystal scorpions for free drops. He's even somewhat successful, but not completely, so the show can give him some wins while still dunking on him completely.

absolutely put on SLF in the background like 2 months ago because I heard the dub was coming along well, and I wanted a dub show to have in the background that wasn't as high stakes.

smash cut to me catching up to the dub and immediately just happily continuing with the rest of the episodes subbed.

also echoing that the boss Vysache blacksmith song was really quite a special moment, both in terms of it just being really sweet/narratively resonant, and in terms of it being a big exercise in the director trusting the audience to stay present for a 3-minute interlude in the middle of an "action" show.

god. this show. I'm so not okay over Falin and I knew anecdotally/from semispoilers that this episode was going to pop off, so I was expecting to freak out about her "gift" from the mad mage (and did!), but I was not expecting the amount of TLC they gave Chilchuck. that being said it really annoys me that we didn't get the new orc chief's name, or that I somehow missed it?

When the big musical moment happened in SLF I was actually reminded of Tolkien, of all people. The adventure is moving along and then, all of a sudden, epic poem/song. It worked really well in context.

It's Leed, and she's a warband captain (and sister of the orc chief Zon.) And it's a nice bit of story development that as she listens to Chilchuck, she realizes he's not a coward, but feels trapped by Laios and Marcille's desire to save Falin and his terror that they won't listen to the reasonable point that the Mad Mage is a significantly greater threat than the red dragon because of that. She still doesn't think lying is the answer, but being afraid for your friends is something she can respect, hence her gently but firmly pointing out that being honest is the answer here.

This honestly doesnt bother me, like "Portal Fantasty" or "Another world story" is a bit of a mouthful. I may not be fond of Isekai as a genere, especially the modern power fantasy/wish fulfillment stuff, but it 's a genre with a long history - Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Narnia, etc. Having a single word for it is just useful - that's how languages change and evolve.

For Delicious in Dungeon, is the manga complete? If so, how many episodes/seasons will the anime take to cover it all? I hope it's not one of those 1000 manga episode slogs. :D

14 volumes (the 14th one comes out in the US in July, you can read the chapters in English already, though). Not sure how many seasons it would take, as they're doing a 2 cour season one.

    New Watamote

Yoshida and Tomoki are pretty funny together, but Tomoki still seems hella ace. There's never any embarrassment or awkwardness about getting flirted with, he's just purely annoyed by it. Also Yoshida liking Tomoki still feels like it came out of nowhere. It's pretty funny though that loser Tomoko's having a great time at the festival hanging out with all her friends and meanwhile her cool brother is totally miserable and just wants to go home.

I love that Minami was like "oh my friend likes this guy, I should help her out" promptly followed by "wait but my friend is an asshole, why should I help?"

Also I love that Wada is still just bumming around in the background in his schoolgirl outfit, looking happy as can be. He's gonna spend the whole festival like that if he can help it. Definitely nothing going on with that boy gender-wise, nope nope nope.

At the pace they are going it should be around 3 cours/36-ish epsiodes. This first cour ended at about chapter 30 out of 97.

I'm not sure I agree with you about Yoshida and Tomoki. She's seemed to be attracted to him in pretty much all their interactions. I doubt he'll go for it all the same, but I'm still rooting for Yoshida, she's good and pure and deserves nice things. I'm waiting for chaos cousin's meddling to culminate too, should be fun.

The Dangers in My Heart continues to have some of the best title cards in any media. Hear’s hoping that they do another season
now that they’ve gotten together officially
I think they managed to get through 8 volumes of the manga so far, but it looks like there’s at least two more volumes available, and the manga is still ongoing. It will probably be a while though, sadly.

Paradise Kiss is one of the few things you're probably looking for, though it's not so much becoming friends as both just realizing they were toxic together, and going their separate ways. Maybe KimiKiss too, I guess, though that's more "Gee, I know we're dating, but you're clearly attracted to your cousin, and who am I to stand in the way of that." Which is also weird for a lot of reasons. You MIGHT be able to make a case for SeiZon, but it's a convoluted soap opera that the (good) first season wisely decided to largely stay the fuck out of and focus mainly on comedy instead, and the breakup in question happens before the show anyway.

It's not too uncommon for one of the characters to be in a relationship with somebody to start out that's obviously failing or falling apart and the TRUE relationship is the two protagonists together, while the rejected person doesn't care about it. Or for a pair to break up for some contrived reason, but get back together later. But the Paradise Kiss thing where two protagonists break up because they're bad together rather than some external factor is exceedingly rare. They wouldn't have started dating in the first place if it wasn't TRUE LOVE after all.

Skip and Loafer had our two main characters get together for like two weeks and then break up again. They'll probably end up together again but they've stayed friends through everything.

Only 97 episodes? That seems shockingly short for the marathon manga I've seen. And that's awesome! Glad the story has a definitive end.

A lot of manga reminds me of TV shows that go on for 2-3 seasons too long because money.
