I have Looser Ranger on my list of shows to watch this season, yet I find myself having a hard time getting around to watching the episode that’s already aired. I’m a fan of both Power Rangers and Sentai, and a different take on the premise interests me. I have a high tolerance for camp and such. I’m just not in the mood for bleak, I guess. For those that are familiar with the series, how dark and bleak does it get? It doesn’t need to be a comedy or anything, but I don’t really want to start something grim. I have a bad habit of not dropping most shows I start, even if I’m not really invested in them anymore (What if it gets good!).

It's dark. In my opinion, there are practically zero "good" characters. Everyone is screwed up and lacking in morals. There is some horrific shit going on. Some body horror. Gore.

    There are also funny parts.

    I think it's a solid 6 outta 10 manga.

Thanks for the info. I think I’ll catch up on Gotchard instead. I’m about 7 episodes behind on that.

    Apothecary Diaries is really good

It’s really something special and something you can recommend without caveats.

It has been one of the few anime I could convince my wife to watch. She’s usually dismissive of anime but the combination of a historical setting/costuming, small medical mysteries, and the absence of the worst anime tropes was able to reel her in.

Since then I’ve been able to convince her to watch Frieren, which she also really enjoyed. We’ll see what I can push next but highly doubt she’ll ever fall deep enough to enjoy some of the stranger things out there like Gushing Over Magic Girls.

I really liked it initially when it had a smaller cast and could pay more attention to individual characters, but a few months ago when the really big battles started I wound up losing track of what was going on, which is a bit of a shame, I think it'll be something to re-read all at once when it's completed.

If you have Netflix, add Monster to the list if you're already considering Pluto.

I'm having a hard time thinking of a less "Anime™©®" anime than Monster.

I honestly don't remember any of those from the manga. I can't speak to the anime adaptation, but the closest I can remember the manga getting to such is this like Marcille Fashion Show - which featured zero nudity etc.

Another good series with an upcoming adaptation is Witch Hat Atelier

I think it might be because panty shot implies to me a very specifically sexualised shot, often unnecessarily so? And senshis stuff is more treated like comedy? Dunno

This edges more into the anime-isms, but Campfire Cooking in Another World is an isekai that has an adult protagonist who's trying to live peacefully, except for the giant battle-happy wolf demigod that demands his cooking

my memory of this one isn't perfect so i don't think there are things like panty shots in it, although various goddesses show up and their designs are various degrees of scantily clad. it focuses mostly on fantasy cooking, fantasy merchantry, and a kind of monster taming/parenting aspect, it's pretty light-hearted

My partner and I are just finishing a rewatch of this and I can confirm it’s free of sexual fanservice, which they replaced with food fan service. It won’t make you horny, but it will make you hungry.

If you like fantasy meets cooking as a concept, I would recommend Restaurant to Another World. It is a rare reverse Isekai where all of the fantasy people end up traveling to a western style Japanese restaurant whose doors open to various places in the fantasy world each Saturday. If I recall, it is generally fanservice free aside from a couple of instances (I think there’s a shower scene in the first episode and there are dragons later that take human form and then need to get dressed).

It’s mostly a series of short slice of fantasy life stories where different people encounter doors in the middle of nowhere that then lead to the restaurant. It’s very chill time, and the food seems good.

To me the anime bullshit is when it's explicitly sexualized etc. Nudity isnt a bad thing, and Meshi treats it just fine. Your mileage may vary.

The only time in the DinD anime so far where I’ve felt the nudity was perhaps excessive was, to be as non-spoilery as possible, a couple of episodes ago (episode 13, I think) during a bath scene between two female characters. The rest has just been monsters like dryads and sirens and such.

Yeah, the bath scene in episode 12 is...I believe I called it Rule 34 fodder, and I stand by that assessment.

Girl Meets Rock is still rolling along weekly and staying charming.

I like the combo of trying to get a rock band together with lots of petty high school drama. Like I enjoy a high school romcom as much as the next sucker, but this series is really not trying to pretend that any of these couples are still gonna be together in like 1 year.

Also kinda means that the ace/aro girl frequently comes across as the only sane person in the club. I like the way they're making that an important part of her character, but not really the central part.

Kind of an interesting contrast from other Cute Girls Doing Music series like Bocchi or K-on. In those romance basically never comes up. In this series it comes up a lot, but the band members that Rin is recruiting are all more motivated to do music than date, and that makes them oddballs in their peer group.

This is one of those I can't commentate because I really don't know how the anime is adapting things, but in the manga didn't read as rule 34 fodder at all.

A scene can be designed to directly state and also imply several ideas, like emotional closeness, the current state of the characters' relationships, etc. I think it's kind of anime-poisoned brain to think that a bathing scene could ONLY be designed to titillate and that's why it's there.

The anime scene felt like they were a couple seconds away from smoochin, so to speak. It was one of the few scenes so far that screamed “Oh yeah, this is a Trigger show”. I like Trigger as a studio, but they have a style.

Two On Ice is, somehow, still going, and now is going to be about TV ratings for sports shows? (and also the intricacies of how competitive skating is scored?) I really have no idea where it's going, I'll admit; I was expecting it to be ending any moment now but the story doesn't quite feel like that yet.

Well, it's over now, with one of the more weirdly-paced final chapters I've seen in a while. Normally they try and _wind up_ storylines, but this one seemed to be introducing more things up until the last few pages. And while the main characters had a decent end to their storyline, the "good grief, pleasant story about skating, just chill out a bit with this guy" character continued to feel weirdly out of place:
    qdmw0pnwi9e0.png
    wzalax11mjh5.png

The whole "nobody cairs about pairs" always felt a bit off, because pairs skating, for me at least, got more coverage than individuals, though I think that's because the only time I ever really paid attention to it was. along with everyone else in the UK, for Torville and Dean's _Bolero_ routine.

Tonbo! might be the weirdest new anime I've watched this season, and that's saying something. The manga is apparently published in a golf magazine, and has over 500 chapters. And, for some reason, it's being simuldubbed. I have no idea who any of the VAs are, and the dub just sounds really, really odd. The entire plot seems to be a former golfer retiring and moving to a tiny, remote island that's somehow built (and maintains) its own golf course. Even though nobody that lives there is any good at golfing. Except, of course, for our precocious child prodigy title character.

I guess it's just an endless slice of life series for golfers? I feel compelled to give this one a few episodes, based on the surprise dub alone.
