oh my god, this is such a great idea for a dnd group. have them write down and or draw what they remember the other party members looking like and then have the enemies copy that and let the party laugh at how their OCs are mangled beyond repair

Also, asking someone to go to Episode 11 is kind of a tall order. If a show doesn't get me by 4, that's the tried and true cutoff point.

While I understand this and agree with it in general, there are stories that give up grabbing you immediately to patiently build up the world and characters until everything you thought was boring turns out to be retroactively deeply meaningful. This is one of those shows that requires investment to grab many people. I'm aware many people were interested from the start, but from what I've seen the amount of people who have said "It took me a while to get into this but my patience was rewarded" is not small. It's worth pointing that out as an exception to arbitrary "hard limits".

(As an aside, of the shows I've watched in my life, I'd actually put the hard limit at episode 5, where the first major conflict usually climaxes, sometimes completely unexpectedly at the start of that episode.)

In any case, there's nothing wrong with informing people of how long it takes for a more patient methodical show to reach the point most people who love it truly started to get invested. At least they know there's more to it, and if they want to give up before then it is up to them.

I have a topical example: My favourite novel explicitly starts "wrong". It starts with like 15 pages of pure telling the reader exposition and world building to establish the character and worlds initial setup, but after that methodical countdown it explodes like a rocket launch and never stops firing until the ride is over. Those 15 pages were initially a bit hard going, but its now my favourite novel. And now that I've read it, I understand that this setup was required to achieve what they were going for. It was the prelaunch briefing and checklist before all the excitement.

For me, DiD has a similar ask.

I used to have a minimum of 5 back when shows were 24-26 episodes (unless I really got turned away by something in the earlier episodes), but decreased it to 3 when shows cut down to 12-13 episode seasons. However, after that I realized it couldn't be a hard rule since some shows really go about laying their groundwork for better impact later, so now it's more of a loose rule that can be influenced by recommendations of people I know and/or this thread.

Yeah if most people are clamoring I usually listen, but not always. My feelings for at least one show were so apathetic I genuinely didnt care if I missed out.

If someone feels that way about the initial DiD setup, then that's fair to me.

So does Monster, the simmeriest of slow burn anime.

Generally, I do the 5 episode vibe test as a rule as well. If nothing has grabbed my interest by then, chances are it never will.

A Game of Thrones is notably quite boring for the first 80 pages. Madoka Magica doesn't really get to the meat of the series until the end of Episode 3. Keijo!!!!!!!! has whole minutes of setting up who the main characters are before getting to the action.

I definitely get it when someone says, "It gets better here." But it's on the media to make the reader/viewer to at least want to reach that point.

They wander into a town where they're comparatively Ultraman-sized, get defeated by the JSDF, and wake up 'crucified' like that.

Apparently they did a new City Hunter movie - looks to better catch the odd dichotomy of the manga than the Jackie Chan version (though likely no Street Fighter II dream sequence in this one, either.)

Fun fact: they made two more unlicensed Hong Kong city hunter movies after that one: Savior of the Soul which is an even more loose adaptation and further in the dramatic direction…

My tires bite into the asphalt

I risk my life on cheap thrills
yet I still fear what tomorrow might bring.

It´s your pain or my pain or
    somebody´s pain,
If there is someone you live for,
It´s your dream or my dream or
    somebody´s dream.
There is nothing I am afraid of.

    Get wild and tough
I can´t solve the puzzle of love alone.
    Get wild and tough
There´s no place for weakness in this town.

    Get chance and luck

    Get chance and luck
You can go back and fix those broken dreams.

    I dunno what that means.

I want to be clear that this book is a product of the 50s and I do not empathise with or like any of its characters. That just has almost nothing to do with how I react to a story. I don't need to like any character in a story. I don't need to approve of or relate to or share any values with anyone in it. I don't work that way. You can't glean anything of me from that I keep my real life firmly separate from what I read, and I read very widely.

I just started reading that book, got to a specific page, and my entire day disappeared until I had finished it, and I closed the book in a kind of shock. Even my girlfriend mentioned I had not done anything else, which is normally unusual. I think the main character is a piece of shit. I don't even know why it gripped me that hard. But it did. Calling it my favourite book is probably not the right word to use. But if someone asks me for a book, its going to come up, it just grabbed me that much.

Watching Konosuba episode 4, what I'm struck by is how the animation, editing, and extremely high tier voice acting carries a plot which is... a pervy light novel from a mid-tier author. "Megumin sets off a couple of Explosions in a short montage," isn't really funny in any way, just by that description. But how it played out was extremely good, from the extremely specific "noise of exhaustion" Megumin's VA went with, to how outrageously over the top each beat was. In short, the writing hasn't really gotten any better, but the presentation is extremely good and I'm laughing my ass off because of it.
