A while ago I posted about the Magic the Gathering manga. It's getting an English release.

Announcement: Attention Magic: The Gathering fans! The original Japanese manga, "Destroy All Humans. They Can't Be Regenerated. A Magic: The Gathering Manga," with story by Katsura Ise, and art by Takuma Yakota, releases Fall 2024. Includes an exclusive card!

For those unfamiliar with this, it's a school romance thing set in the 90s where boy meets girl via playing Magic: the Gathering. It's a fun nostalgic thing, really.

Also don't get your hopes up when it comes to the "exclusive card", it's probably just an English version of the original promo - i.e. Diabolic Edict with the Torment art and modern border. (Probably the M15 border now, I'd guess?)

Watching Konosuba episode 4, what I'm struck by is how the animation, editing, and extremely high tier voice acting carries a plot which is... a pervy light novel from a mid-tier author. "Megumin sets off a couple of Explosions in a short montage," isn't really funny in any way, just by that description. But how it played out was extremely good, from the extremely specific "noise of exhaustion" Megumin's VA went with, to how outrageously over the top each beat was. In short, the writing hasn't really gotten any better, but the presentation is extremely good and I'm laughing my ass off because of it.

It’s the Isekai equivalent of It’s Always Sunny which I am very much here for

This arc of them in the capital is just peak Kazuma both his highs and lows.

Apparently they did a new City Hunter movie - looks to better catch the odd dichotomy of the manga than the Jackie Chan version (though likely no Street Fighter II dream sequence in this one, either.)

Fun fact: they made two more unlicensed Hong Kong city hunter movies after that one: Savior of the Soul which is an even more loose adaptation and further in the dramatic direction…

    Baking Powder? Exsqueeze Me?

Saviour of the Soul is a "City Hunter" adaption??? What the ever living fuck? That makes less sense than a thing the makes no sense.

The way the main four of the cast pass around "trying to be a good person" "actually a bad person" "doing something ridiculous" "playing the straight man" depending on who's which in a given scene is amazing. Each character is any and all of those things at a given time, and every combination works well.

    King Crimson
Didn't King Crimson erase a section of time where Bruno got killed, and that made Bruno like, undead for the rest of the part until it started to catch up with him near the end? I guess it doesn't come up in these discussions because it's just so out there that it's hard for it to contradict or support anything else about the stand's powers, but like what the hell?

Speaking of Jojo, I recently decided to catch up on the manga and read Jojolion.

I don't think the amnesiac protagonist is particularly fun and I would have liked for there to be a clearly defined villain throughout.

Jojo does tend to not introduce the main villain right away, but here I felt like the identity of the final enemy came out of nowhere.

I also read what's available of Jojolands so far, and I immediately think its dumb kid protagonists are more fun.

The new Urusei Yatsura is a wonderful thing. It simultaneously manages to lovingly recreate the classic stories while keeping it fresh in tone, and also paying homage to both the classic anime and the manga, no easy feat.

Sadly, uh, much like the original, do not watch the dub*. It's a valiant effort, but it just doesn't fit UY at all, maybe because of how extremely Japanese the show's absurdist humor is.

So, it turns out that there is one way to force the hand of The Devil Who Wears Prada, Anna Wintour, and get her to the bargaining table - threaten to ruin her big night:
After more than a year of contentious negotiations, publishing giant Condé Nast reached a last-minute contract agreement with the labor union representing hundreds of staffers at titles such as Vogue, GQ and Glamour, staving off a planned work stoppage ahead of the Met Gala.

Though the two sides struggled for months to reach agreements on issues such as wages, parental leave and severance, talks sped up last week after the union vowed to strike on Monday — a move that would have hamstrung the company’s coverage of one of the biggest fashion and celebrity events of the year.

“The Met Gala is fashion’s big night; it’s like the Super Bowl,” said Alma Avalle, a Condé Union bargaining committee member. “Once the work stoppage entered the conversation, all of a sudden the company was like, ‘Okay, well we can give you a little more.’”

In terms of justifications besides the obvious employers want to control you and not allow employees to move on; isn’t the logic supposed to be to protect you from sharing trade secrets from one company to another? Which seems redundant in this day and age of NDAs.

The one I'm most familiar with is that if you have a salesperson and they're really fucking good at sales and they build up a massive client list, you really don't want them to go somewhere else and take their client list with them, and you definitely don't want to see them go create their own company and take their client list with them.

Of course, if you don't want them to go you should make them fucking happy and the reality is that the non-compete is there to try and extract the salesperson's value from them if they exit the company.

You'll notice that nobody sneezes or gets uptight about absorbing a smaller company so they get to dig into that smaller company's clientele or hire someone on who's been working for themselves so that they can absorb their clientele. Everyone's more than willing to assign a value to people who have client lists like this, so finding ways to keep what you bought without paying for it will always sound like a win.

It's worth noting that in this case you could just force them to sign a non-solicit, which is completely reasonable and not something covered by this rule change.

Even ignoring the clients list, sales people can have a lot of internal knowledge that is proprietary and also impossible to protect in a meaningful way. Input into the bid spreadsheet kind of stuff.

In a competitive bidding environment a sales person from your competitor can be valuable because they worked for that competitor and know that IDK they just struck a new deal with XYZ supplier and their steel costs are now 95c/lb instead of 99c. So you need to cut your margin to have the low bid, Or that their subcomponent supplier's prices are way higher than yours so you can pad your bid a bit cause they are paying an extra $400k for motors or w/e

The edge information like that gives you obviously decays with time, but in a few weeks or months period the new company could be bidding against the old, with the person who prepared a large amount of the old companies bid giving them all the details of it.

A non-solicit is still bullshit. It's still trying to extricate the worker from the thing that makes them valuable so that they have no value if they choose to leave (and you know their new employer was counting on clients being carried over if they gave a good offer). While, simultaneously, recognizing that value if they're running solo and you make them an offer.

If someone's leaving and you want to keep their clients, you get your next best person on that client list and try to keep them. That's the fucking game, so play it. If you can't play it, then that person who just left should have been given an offer they couldn't refuse.

Non-solicits are just another way to try and use our legal system to bind workers and not their employers.

Non-solicits are also frequently just straight-up non-competes that throw the word "solicit" in and assume that makes it something different, since employers throwing those kinds of 'agreements' around are usually unable to stop themselves from wording them as broadly and inflexibly as possible.

What you're missing is that a non-solicit also protects that next-best salesman by preventing me from using perfect knowledge of existing contracts/bids to undercut my previous employer. New employers are going to require you to disclose any non-compete/non-solicits as part of the hiring process anyway, and most are going to be okay with you burning a year working new leads until you can circle back to your old clients when it's time to rebid.
