Hrm my drug screening was cancelled (I'm being moved up from permanent contractor to senior MIS analyst, as a real boy city employee), and she told me to reschedule somewhere else for a drug screen + full physical

This annoyed me so I asked my coworker and he said nobody else had to do that, so I asked why, if nobody else had to get a physical

She said that it's a new requirement and then said "Please refrain from discussing pre-employment screens with other City employees"

I'm fuckin sorry what? Is that even a legal demand on her part? She's HR manager for the city, and at present, I'm not even a city employee (not for another 11 days), and even once I am an employee I'm pretty sure I have a legal right to discuss my job requirements with anyone and so do my coworkers

I got suspicious because I had a workmans comp claim that I had just finished physical therapy for and she just found out about that AFTER offering me the job so now I'm sideyeing this shit

Note: there is absolutely no reason for a physical, my job does not require me to lift things or whatever and I can work from home half the time

    Hi HR PERSON

Thank you for your suggestion, we were having a casual chat about the onboarding process and did not realize that this topic was restricted. I aim to fully comply with all city guidelines moving forward and would appreciate clarification on any other topics related to concerted activities or aspects of our employment that are considered confidential, additionally what the penalties are for discussing these topics.

Thank you and have a wonderful weekend!"

It should be noted that as city employees there is virtually nothing confidential about our jobs, only PII is confidential, but you can still ask for it you just won't get it. Most email conversations can be grabbed via FOIA or open records requests for crying out loud

Side note: in the past she has put in the city handbook that city employees cannot discuss payroll, which violates the city's laws, you don't even need to get to the federal laws!

I imagine the EEOC would have opinions on this happening, but there isn't much to be done if you want the job. The nuclear option is calling them out that way, but I would only recommend it if you don't intend to work there.

At the state level, Alabama pushed through some legislation this week which prohibits companies in the state from voluntarily recognizing unions. The plant would have taken a nine-figure hit if they didn't find some way to shut the drive down.

Also shit like pay data is usually public knowledge. Like... I can't go into peoples' HR files and find out what they're paid, but I can go through the budget and find out.

It's also a violation of federal supremacy. Arguably.

The counter argument is that because federal law compels companies to recognize unions it's not actually possible to violate the state law as written.

I ha to go wtf at the clergy thing, and search it up.

Which lead to this peach of a quote.

    https://www.labornotes.org/blogs/2024/05/mercedes-enlists-pastor-its-union-busting-campaign
Lewis was returning to the line after a bathroom break when Rev. Wilson spotted the UAW on his T-shirt and wristbands, and approached him.

“I definitely feel like it was targeted because I was wearing UAW gear, and I’ve been in commercials,” said Lewis. “I’m pretty well-known around the plant.”

Lewis said many of Wilson’s comments were a bit vague and focused on what workers could achieve as individuals. He didn’t find this persuasive.

“There’s not a single action in history that the effect was just one person doing something,” he told Rev. Wilson. “One person can start something, but in order to create change, you have to have backing behind you.”

Lewis pointed to the Civil Rights Movement. “I asked him, because he was a Morehouse graduate, ‘If the voice of one is so imperative. Because we’re both Black men, how do you feel about Martin Luther King, Jr.?’” (Rev. Wilson graduated with his Master's of Divinity from the Morehouse School of Religion at the Interdenominational Theological Center of Atlanta, Georgia. The school isn’t affiliated with Morehouse College.)

“Martin Luther King was an elitist classist who did not care about the average American,” Rev. Wilson said in response, according to Lewis.

Rev. Wilson didn’t respond to a request for comment.

Been wondering when this would get an adaption. I'm also curious how they're going to approach it, because early sakamoto days is kinda just okay - It's not till an arc or two in it really starts to find it's feet and pull out the absoloute insanity that makes it shine as just the most ridiclous action manga. My memory is it very much starts hard on the comedy side, and now it's just The Action Manga (the absolutely insane action manga)

That seems to be a common strategy gag manga are safer and if they stick you can add plot and such later when you have an audience

It's probably less a (intentional) strategy and more of a product of a newer trend where the following sequence happens: An artist/mangaka posts a series of funny gag comics on Twitter/Pixiv/Social Media, the comics get popular, the comics get the attention of a publisher and gets picked up, mangaka feels the urge/need to expand the series once the already pre-written funny gag parts are finished.

A fairly recent example would be Ruri Dragon, which had a long "pilot" one-shot chapter self-published on Twitter before it was picked up.

It can be as subtle as a brick to the face but they'll still ignore it or explain it away. Religion is a means to power and control for them, not something that can or should influence their behavior. Only others'.

You have no idea how deep the crazy shit can get for Christians justifying anything until you've had a family member (my father, in this case) seriously start getting into shit like Biblical numerology. Way back when I would put up with crap like that, he had multiple straight-faced monologues at me where he would spout gibberish about numbers and meanings and chapters and verses lining up to mean to things.

And it's just... so insane. Dude, you are reading a badly translated English version of literature originally written in old Greek and Hebrew which was itself probably not well-translated when it got to the Romans and probably had a thousand different versions when the original contributors collected a bunch of regional stories together for it some three to four thousand years ago and you have no idea how many iterations of it existed before that. Not to mention utterly arbitrary factors like font size and page formatting moving things around.

It is a deep, deep crazy hole, fully capable of producing shitty people who can simultaneously claim to love everybody because that's what Christians should do and then cut all ties with one of their children for being trans, some years after cutting all ties with a child they adopted but decided was too difficult to handle and pushed them back on the state.

Gag might be too strong, but the Pilot of Ruri Dragon leaned harder on comedy and humor than the Slice of Life school stuff.

Late Edit: More broadly, the bigger point is a increasing number of series are being picked up off social media, possibly before the Author knows where they want to take the plot long term or even before they have a plot in mind.

For me I was moving from federal contractor to govvy, and it was a 20k a year pay cut. I had other reasons, because the hiring manager lied to me, and I took offense, but it did set me back in a way.

Sounds to me like it's your hiring manager that was the issue and not an angry email.
