It's definitely more about "given only stone age tools, how could we smelt aluminium" than "how should we Remake Politics But Get It Right This Time"; there's some social aspects in there but it's not what the writer's interested in. And, yeah, it can be fairly cheesecake-y at times, but only like, say, One Piece, it's not the point of the story, it's just what the artist likes to draw at times.

There are some great moments in there, so if you like the way it starts, you'll probably like the way it keeps going.

Ok, that's good to hear. The only context I had previously was those crappy, contextless Crunchyroll ads I saw a couple of years ago.

Also, looking up Inagaki I see he made a company to ensure manga creators keep their copyright on their work? That's pretty rad.

One small spoiler for the “restart humanity” thing
It’s not a “repopulate the earth” angle, it’s figuring out how to produce a chemical to free everyone from the peteification, plus how to rebuild society to support bringing everyone back who was petrified.

It’s really good and has some really heart warming and bittersweet moments in there

    One sad thing is
They do reinvent capitalism to appease/motivate their chosen revived sea captain, as well as a bunch of people they brought back to motivate them by creating a small fashion-and-ramen-based economy to build a seafaring ship

Also maybe it’s headcanon but I am like completely convinced that Senku is potentially the most Ace man on the planet, petrified or not
Capitalism returning is a bummer, although I was more worried about, like, slavery returning

Thankfully, as lax as Jump can be, I don’t think they’ve let their standards drop that far

Closest thing I can think of is like
The goals of the evil vizier type of character who’s the villain for one arc, and so they gotta free the village he’s ruling

At this point I think going into any new GitS media holding it up to SAC or the first movie is just a silly exercise in unnecessarily kneecapping your experience in advance tbh.

Science Saru have a solid track record of good shows and I'm interested in seeing a decent take on the original material.

Well, I wanted to like Kaiju No. 8, but the main character is immensely fucking annoying.

Leans way too hard into the "plucky goofball loser" schtick.

As dope as the one piece manga is the anime for dessrosa is way better

The scene where fujitora winks at donflamingo is one of the hardest scenes ever and it's a anime original

    Also, well.
    Dressrosa is 102 chapters.
    Dressrosa is 118 episodes.

Assuming an average episode runtime of 22 minutes, that's 42 hours and 16 minutes.

Meanwhile reading a chapter takes... I dunno, five minutes maybe? So 8 hours 30 minutes.

I caught up to current on the anime from like, back in alabasta where I left off in the olde dayes from the 4kids dub, up to dressrosa, and then dropped the whole thing because the weekly "nothing happens or is resolved or is interrupted by another flashback to a tragic backstory" became too much for me when I could no longer just skip ahead. Gave the anime another shot with whole cake island and it was even worse about this. As much as I enjoy one piece in theory, and enjoy following the manga weekly, I dislike the one piece anime.

It really amuses me, in retrospect, that we never got that with the original GitS, because I think up until, like, the original adaptation if you suggested Oshii as the director of a Ghost adaptation, people would have figured you would of course get that mix of Action Drama and Complete Goofball bullshit, because that dichotomy was 100% Oshii’s Wheelhouse. His work on Urusei Yatsura, Patlabor’s tonal swings, even his first live action film Red Spectacles dwells so heavily within that swing between Serious Political Business and “oh Christ our protagonist is the dumbest person on the planet, aren’t they?” Style Comedy.

And then Ghost in the Shell hits and it’s just 100% serious Philosopher Oshii. No comedic bits, no characters embracing the doofus jester doing a jig at the core of their soul. Just the business.

Not to detract from what the first film was and is, but it’s just fascinating to see Oshii eschew what you would think would be a perfect fit of the wider breadth of his sensibilities to just focus on the seriousness of it all.

    One art detail about JJK
Is it me or, especially at the end, is Gege drawing Okkotsu-Gojo’s eyes more like Okkotsu’s than Gojo’s? If so that’s a nice touch to emphasize through the art that it’s Okkotsu, and not Gojo, in there now

Red Spectacles is 100% pure TV Oshii, which is itself a whiplash moment if you’re coming into this after just being acquainted with his other films. Like even Beautiful Dreamer is more serious in tone overall.

Stray Dog definitely goes back to Movie Oshii Oshii, but it’s also got its moments of levity when the time comes.

Yeah, it doesn't do anything like that. It's more of a "return to the status quo" kind of thing. Which is wasted potential, but kind of hard to get a lot of political nuance when you're making a mass media product aimed for 11 year old boys. That said, one thing I appreciate is that while the story ultimately embraces capitalism, the communist antagonist does show the creators actually understand the underpinnings of opposing philosophies, which makes the rejection of said philosophy more palatable, personally. If anything, the thing the story takes greater issue with is his anti-agrarianism. It also helps that the capitalist character is a lot of fun.

I need to pick Dr. Stone back up. I think I stopped during the 4th story arc.

From what I remember of the capitalism character, he embodies the "ideal" purpose of capitalism more than the "reality" of capitalism in that he believes it exists as a means to provide people incentive for putting in work to reach a goal, as opposed to its existence as a means to extract wealth and consolidate it.

Apparently the studio isn't being seen as, well, an optimal choice:
"Damn. This series would probably have explode if it was given a decent adaptation like JJK was. It's pretty much Dad John Wick and has some of the best action paneling in Jump right now.

I don't have any faith in that studio."
"Goddamnit, TMS is animating. There's no hope for this. I'm crushed.

Shueisha had a smash hit on their hands and decided to throw it away. Fucking unbelievable. "

I really need to read Sakamoto Days one of these days.

It's a fun manga! It kind of has that classic thing where a comedy manga with action eventually moves into being an action manga with comedy, but it's still got some good gags mixed in with the increasingly ludicrous action so I'm fine with it.

    Tsukimichi S2 Episode 21
    Tomoki cast Nuke!
    It wasn't very effective.

Mio trying to learn a new technique is amusing because it's already been shown when she wants to learn something she'll just throw herself completely into it until she has. She did it with cooking and now she's trying to snatch Left's reflection ability by triggering it repeatedly with her Dark Spirit Gun Yu Yu Hakusho move. Then she'll probably just eat him.

Makoto did not get to HENSHIN but he did place himself in the path of imminent combat next week and Hibiki is right there so I guess that qualifies as "meeting" for now. Nevermind Tomoki at the bottom of a hole somewhere, he can stay there.

I watched Remake our life, and it maybe hits a little close to home at first, but has an ok ending.

Then I watched a few more episodes of frieren. It is so weird how one episode can be at a 0 and then the next is balls to the wall 100. Still have around 11 to go, but the trek north has been less interesting since they fought the demons.

I've tried reading JJK twice now and both times got a few dozen chapters in before it lost me; I was curious about what's going on now, though, so I tried reading the most recent chapter to see if I could work out what the fuss is about, and to be honest I couldn't tell. Is there any way to explain what's so surprising about these events without needing hundreds of chapters of backstory?

I am one of the (seemingly) few who really like that damn manga and I think it's in great part because of how it is able to consistently one-up my "jesus christ that is so horrible" meter

Wow! I thought it couldn't get worse emotionally but it always definitely can!

Why do I enjoy this? I cannot say.
