Hmm, Mothers Basement YouTube channel just put up a video that original 2003 FMA is no longer available for streaming, because crunchyroll didn't renew a bunch of funimations licenses when they merged under Sony.

    This is a distressing trend.

I can totally believe Manga stables are doing a bunch of shady criminal shit to save money and dumping the problems on their artists when it starts getting hot.

    Doesn't sony own fma outright?

Partly; ANN lists the production being joint between Aniplex (Sony subsidiary), BONES, Dentsu Inc., Mainichi Broadcasting System and Square Enix (who own publishing rights on the manga and I would assume are likely the primary company dealing with any derivative works as long as Arakawa’s publishing deal with them lasts)

In this series the rangers wiped out all the boss monsters a decade ago, and all that's left are the footsoldiers which are exceptionally weak but can shapeshift. Ever since then, the rangers have basically enslaved the footsoldiers, and force them to have a battle in a stadium each Sunday where one of the footsoldiers shapeshifts to look like a boss monster for the rangers to stop in front of the crowd who's unaware it's all fake now.

The main character is a footsoldier who has had enough of this and decides to infiltrate the rangers.

Also the red ranger is most commonly compared to Homelander.

Edit: Oh, the bit in the ED where they turn into the rangers, that's just artistic license. The rangers are separate characters.

Yeah, I'm inclined to think that Japan has an issue here. I don't think it's a case of mangaka collectively love to commit tax evasion. This might be an issue of the laws needing to be written more clearly. Might be an issue that many simply lack the resources to navigate the process on their own and the government needs to provide them with the tools because it's not possible to make things clearer or simpler. A bunch of studios are being super fucking shitty about it and leaving their people high an dry. This last one likely isn't just limited the anime, light novel and manga industries because those that follow the vtuber scene likely know of the issue of former Nijisanji vtubers finding out they owe taxes. Might be some combo or all of those things. Regardless, Japan's government really needs to look into this and start taking steps to ensure that it happens less.

Eh, it's likely the same thing that happens here in the US and nails a lot of performers - they're working as contractors and not employees, and as such the bookkeeping is on their end, not the company's. Now, there are two issues here - one is a matter of education (as many times these people don't realize that they have these obligations), and the other is a question of classification (though given how many established mangaka set up incorporated studios, I'm thinking that this isn't the case in this matter.)

The other thing I've gained the impression is that given Mangaka's workload, they may literally not have the time to handle tax returns.

Yeah, as others have said the official English title is Go Go Loser Ranger, though before that it was being fan translated as Ranger Reject so you may have heard that title.

The anime adaption ended up on Hulu in the US.

random thought that just popped into my head, has there ever been a sentai team type show where the leader type one was a lady? or a sentai team with a majority of the members being women?

In Kakuranger, Tsukihime is technically the overall leader despite not being the red.

Incidentally, it’s getting a 30th anniversary Net Film this year through Toei Tokusatsu Fan Club:

    https://youtu.be/e32JRcErO4s?feature=shared

Akibaranger is a three-member team where it’s two women and one man:

[there was an English subbed one but this one’s less blurry]

interesting that the opening and group shots still frame red as the #1 character
and akibaranger is a satire of the genre right?

has there ever been a female red ranger?

    Also in Shinkenger
it turns out that Takeru is not the real 18th head of the Shiba clan, nor the true Shinken Red, but instead a retainer for the actual daughter of the previous head serving in her stead and protecting her while she is in hiding until time for her to take up the role.

Though this is negated because she is unable to fulfill the duties in defeating the Gedoshu, so in turn she officially “adopts” Takeru as her heir so he can officially take her place as the 19th Clan head and return to the role

Also in an incredibly bizarre and cringe decision the Power Rangers adaptation appears to largely adapt Shinkenger fairly straight, including the above spoiler with a slight twist of
being twins, instead of retainer and true clan head
    .

Except because it’s power rangers, the characters are white.

And still named Shiba, and ostensibly descended of a Japanese feudal clan.

So they literally cast white actors as Japanese

No clue since he sold it all off to Hasbro what he gets if anything now.

Not that apparently they’re doing anything with it, since sounds like Hasbro themselves has no fucking clue what to do with the property, as it was an initiative by a previous head of company who passed away.

Lanz can probably clarify if this continued, but the main character in the first 10 or so Donbrothers episodes I watched was the lady in yellow. She was just trying to have a normal life and kept getting summoned to sentai activities against her will. Similarly the pink ranger seemed like the viewpoint character for Boonboomger as well. On top of all of the other examples I would've also used, yeah.

Now, if you want to get into tokusatsu shows featuring mostly women, I have a playlist for you! Advance warning, turns out having all girl teams means the shows are mostly fanservice!

Cutie Honey: The Live isn't on that list because we were watching it weekly as I shared those clips of other, similar shows.

If American versions count, then when Timeranger became Power Rangers Time Force the pink ranger was technically the leader even though the Japanese footage wouldn't let you know that.

Then the recent anniversary series / possibly last ever Power Rangers was all original and had the pink ranger from the prior season promoted to red ranger and leader.

Yeah written-for-male-gaze type stuff is definitely not what I was thinking of, was just thinking about like, latent sexism in media tropes. Like I was extremely surprised that Witch from Mercury had female protagonists, let alone the fact that their character arcs and motivations did not especially revolve around any of the male characters, and were not just subtext gay but actual on screen gay, and the writing was just... normal about it, no winking at the camera or sexualization or anything. "Of course a girl can be the gundam pilot protagonist," says the show. "Why wouldn't she?" It was possibly the most progressively feminist anime I've ever seen in that sense. I don't have a good sense of what the Japanese cultural landscape around that kind of thing is.

I'd say the big manga publishers tends to be more conservative on gender than Japanese culture at large, though it super depends on the particular title. Not necessarily because the authors are conservative, but just in that very Japanese way of like, this is entertainment and bringing up stuff that might piss people off isn't very kosher. For smaller publishers stories can get a lot more openly political.

I feel like there must be some issue with teaching taxes to freelancers in Japan, remembering what happened with the Log Horizon guy.

If I had a nickel for every mangaka being looked at for tax evasion... I don't know how many nickels that would be, but I should probably figure out it and declare it to the IRS before I get audited.

I really wasn't that taken by Kaiju No. 8's manga. I thought it was fine, if well drawn, but the anime is making it way more compelling, probably thanks in no small part to that Production I.G. swagger.
