The people in here who like romcoms where the couple gets together before the comic's end might want to check out You and I are Polar Opposites, they get together in chapter 1 in that one.

I'd say it's pretty solid, though like a lot of romcoms I feel like the first several chapters are the strongest and then it kinda loses steam a bit, starts relying on plotlines that feel a bit more stock. Still, remains entertaining.

You can probably count comics that do that on one hand, so yeah, vastly untapped material.

I would bring up Blooming Love also, which is a currently running series that is a pretty fun low drama romantic comedy where the couple gets together within the first few chapters. And also they're both in college, which is a nice change from the standard high school setting.

Yep, and it's not content to rest on its laurels. Right from the jump, it establishes that it brings up new sources of dramatic tension.

How do you act in public? Ask her out for another date? What's being too forward, what's not being forward enough? How to meet her family? Let your friends in on it?

It's such rich material for storytelling that countless series avoid entirely.

Looking at my Kindle and other manga sources, I'm going to drop a list of all the romcom manga I can find where the main couple gets together and it doesn't immediately end within a volume.

I'll separate it into two lists, the less spoilery one where they get together within the first volume, and a slightly more spoilery one where they get together at some point later on.

    By the First Volume:
    • 100 Girlfriends
    • Beauty and the Beast Girl (only first volume was officially released in English)
    • Boarding School Juliet
    • Catch These Hands!
    • Cheerful Amnesia
    • Extremely Straightforward Boyfriend and Girlfriend (not officially licensed in English)
    • Fly Me to the Moon
    • Girlfriend, Girlfriend
    • The Invisible Man and His Soon-to-be Wife
    • Kase-san and...
    • Love After World Domination
    • Love's in Sight
    • Our Teachers are Dating
    • Rainbows after Storms (licensed, but first volume doesn't release until later this year)
    • Saotome Senshu, Hitakakusu (not officially licensed in English)
    • Sweat and Soap
    • Veil
    • Way of the Househusband
    • We're New at This
    • What I Love About You
    • Wotakoi
    • You and I Are Polar Opposites

Some Point Later and Doesn't Immediately End:
    • The Dangers in My Heart
    • Hitomi-chan is Shy with Strangers
    • Hokkaido Girls are Super Adorable
    • Kaguya-sama: Love is War
    • Kaiju Girl Caramelise
    • Komi Can't Communicate
    • My Monster Secret
    • Ogami-san Can't Keep It In
    • Shed that Skin, Ryugasaki-san (only the first two volumes officially released in English)
    • Uzaki-chan Wants to Hang Out
    • Yancha Gal no Anjou-san (not officially licensed in English)

I left off things where I couldn't remember when they got together, things that were way too horny, and isekai.

You know what a good rare treat in life is?

When you get pulled into a private meeting with your boss, you think it's The Worst News, and it turns out to you getting a 16% raise, and a conversation about how she wishes it could be more than the new raise immediately, but we need to wait to see how much going to permanent working from home and closng the office saves over the next 2 months, and then we might get an additional raise based on that.

together later on and keeps going

Unfortunately Kase-san is very cute before they get together and then kind of crap afterwards. There's not much about their actual relationship, instead it's all like misunderstandings and jealousy and basically the same tropes that are tiring before they start going out.

It's been a long time coming. At least it sounds like Anno ended up in charge of making sure IPs are assigned ownership to people who were important to them, wherever they might be in the industry now? I wonder if that's related to Trigger getting the rights for Panty and Stocking recently. Did Trigger get the rights for Gurren Lagann too?

But it is cute when flowers grow on Yamada's head whenever she's happy.

Kase-san does have a bad jealousy streak that the author doesn't seem to want to address though. Hopefully things will be better now that...
    ...they're finally living together.

Isekai Walking finally failed the "isekai where the main character doesn't have slaves difficulty: impossible" challenge.

it's fairly common in my experience, as a side effect of isekais being the new setting of choice for male wish fulfillment harem story light novel mills

That development just came outta nowhere.

Reminds me of that one isekai which was Daydreamer something something. In it the protagonist meets this other group of people who rally against slavery up to and including using force against slavers. And the story portrays this is as a bad thing. The protagonist also says while he disagrees with slavery it's not his place to to say anything when it's the law of the land because the economy depends on slavery.

I stopped reading it after that one.

Oh shit, it just occurred to me that El-Hazard and Escaflowne are isekai anime, aren't they? I loved those two shows back in the day. Of course, neither ventures into harem or slavery territory, so maybe that's a plus?

tbh I'd say it was a completely different thing before SAO came out. FoZ's anime release was like a decade earlier than SAO's, and the anime climate was much more different then. It wasn't until after SAO's surge of popularity that the isekai mills truly began

The funny thing is that Sword Art Online isn't even an isekai. Like, even ignoring the whole "they're not actually in another world, and they're out of it by the end of the first volume" thing, the story is very much just real people playing an MMO with NPCs (and the Other World as a whole) being pushed to the wayside.

It's definitely a foundational text when it comes to the bafflingly large VRMMORPG genre, alongside the obvious stuff like .hack and actual MMOs and RPGs, but for the actual modern isekai genre I suspect patient zero is probably some niche Syosetsu novel that never got huge in the west?

...actually, reading up on it I guess maybe Familiar of Zero (2004) was patient zero for popularizing the genre on syosetsu? Huh. And Re:Zero's author apparently wrote FoZ fanfiction before he hit it big with Re:Zero. Huh.
Also Mushoku Tensei (2012) is the one that popularized the entire reincarnated scumbag thing, I guess?
It feels kind of weird to be able to point at something and say "this one's at fault", really.

All I've ever seen of familiar of zero is random snippets in YouTube clips of some dude getting abused by presumably the titular Zero for laughs, and that is like the opposite of something I'd ever want to watch. It's like a three stooges bit with even less nuance.
