Side note, if you ever have a chance to read the Akira manga, i seriously recommend it. The local libary has all six volumes, and it's a gorgeous, gorgeous sci-fi/post apoc epic.

That and nausicca for a similar manga is different from the movie experience.

I read both Akira and Nausicaa long before I saw either movie, because the library I went to as a kid had the full print runs of both

While both films are gorgeous, both are also definitely narratively compromised if you watch them after the manga

I prefer the Akira movie over the manga. The manga has soooo many sequences of "Character is trying to get from Point A to Point B. Oh no! Bad guys spotted them! Cue 50 page action sequence", which gets pretty old after the fourth or fifth time. The movie is much tighter and better for it.

(also I prefer the focus the movie puts on Kaneda and Tetsuo's relationship)

The Nausicaa manga friggin rules though.

If we want to talk about actual sakuga in Western animation, Takufumi Hori's sequence in Steven Universe is pretty outstanding

but the real standout is, of course, (real SU spoiler)
James Baxter doing that long cut of the Stevens' fusion dance

Also James Baxter the Horse in Adventure Time.

Mizusaki would probably grow up to be a sakuga animator.

Demon Slayer has that weird combo of an incredibly strong start and really awkward pacing, plus the anime currently ends on
a training arc that ends with a teaser for a film that's still a little while away from release

which is incidentally a similar combo to why I ran out of steam on Hero Academia after season 3

Demon Slayer manga is probably in its last couple chapters but it feels like the pacing of One Piece anime so who knows

I am starting to like Konosuba much much more now that I am further into it

Megumin is surprisingly endearing, and much cooler looking than I expected once she takes her hat off

Kazuma definitely reads like the Straight Man, and I do enjoy how capable he is when he's not being either a jerk or incredibly selfish. The idea of him just picking up a bunch of different handy skills is cool

Darkness is absolutely my favourite character, I just wish she didn't have a goddamn boob plate because they will forever annoy me

Aqua I feel bad for, but she really does constantly make her own situation worse, and I am curious why her powers sometimes just... don't work

Frogs are immune to water type spells. They are Aqua's worse enemy.

I wouldnt say depressingly, it was the kind of situation you kinda expected to happen to them instead of just giving them a happy ending so it was more funny then anything.

I don't know if I can watch the anime since it doesn't really get to the part where things get better for her, but I'm enjoying the manga. The anime does have good music though. And that ending theme has Tomoko's voice actress really give it her all by singing while doing a voice that is basically the essence of "I'm crying, but I'm going to insist I'm not crying."

What episode did you get to? If you’re just going to drop it you might as well jump to episode 19 so you can at least see why the Internet went nuts

Episode 7. I think he'd just beaten the demon that could swim through the ground?

Seems fair to me. I made it one more arc before dropping it. Nothing about the show was particularly compelling besides it looking nice.

I wouldn't got so far as to say that's all it has going for it, but spending $texas on the animation is the reason it got as popular as it did.

the new ones by David Productions are better in basically every way

also the 93 one only covers part 3

the new anime goes from 1-5(the manga is close to finishing part 8 right now)

I haven’t watched, but I’ve heard it’s a decent but truncated version of the 3rd arc. I think it’s best to watch parts 1 and 2 first, so you have a better idea of how long the conflict’s been happening.

The recent part 3 adaptation is good but it’s pretty long and some parts have not aged well at all. Some of the episodes are fucking awesome though.

my first ever exposures to JoJo were memetic references to that scene from the OVA and the corresponding Capcom fighting game, so I basically knew jokes about Road Roller, WRYYFF, and Za WARUDO before anything else

this was probably '04 or '05? so, long before all but the first Viz translations were released, and at that point in time JoJo was even so obscure I couldn't find bootlegs!

I had actually barely known about JoJo when I first started it - I think my reference points were "It has a lot of rock music references" and "it's extremely weird".
