I think Gundam and Zeta Gundam hold up surprising well given their age. For real both are older than I am by a year or two. May as well start at the ground floor.

Or just dive head first into Victory Gundam.

I watched the original gundam series like, idk, 6 years ago? I really enjoyed it and it helped give context for every gundam series I've watched after that so it felt like a good first thing to watch

My first contact with G gundam was not from the anime but super robot wars (2?) on gameboy, it was in japanese too

This old geezer just appeared out of no where and started kicking the heck out of robots and tearing them up*

Only found out much later in life who that old man was

    *He's not piloting anything

The 08th MS team is the best Gundam show I've ever seen, because it has so little deadweight. Just a tight story about a solid group of characters. All the other shows drag on way too long.

The best way to watch the original Gundam is definitely the three compilation movies, but fortunately Zeta is much better paced for TV

I mean, most if not all 50-odd episode shows from the '80s and '90s are gonna feel slow in an era where most anime is cut for 13-episode seasons

Yeah I am watching Turn A right now and you can't really fully appreciate what it's doing unless you've watch a few other Gundam shows first to be able to compare and contrast what they're doing differently.

Lots of great Anya reaction panels this chapter, but I guess that's true of most chapters.

Gotta disagree. I watched the three movies first and hated them. They're all over the place, paced poorly, confusing, and unexciting. Then Toonami did the actual TV series and it became easily one of my favorite Gundam shows. For the unsurprising reason that cutting 50 episodes of a good show into like 6 hours of movies or less leaves a TON on the editing room floor.

Huh, weird, this is how I felt about the Zeta movies but I really just couldn't hold attention with the TV cut of 0079

    Anime is weird

078 is a rough watch due to its age but has a great story.

Zeta has a better budget behind it and is worth watching in full

Alternatively, Mobile Suit Gundam the Origin the manga is being uploaded one chapter at a time for free (legally) and is a incredible retelling on the original gundam

I got started by reading what exists of that then switching over to the movie versions of 78

If you want a good modern gundam show iron blooded orphans is quite good and moves at a fast pace, although I would say the second season gets a little rough with execution. (Even if I actually love the base framework for the ending.)
Actual serious Iron Blooded Orphan spoilers.
Of course the child soldiers are not going to be able to solve their problems by soldiering even more. Of course most of them are gonna end up dying. Of course one guy in a real fancy gundam isn't gonna be able to change the entire world by force. And the series basically is hinting the entire time "nah this isn't gonna work." Even if you have good intentions if you only ever choose to live by the sword, you will without question eventually die by the sword.

The thing about Gundam the Origin is, if you only watched the movie trilogy, you wouldn't know who the fuck a good third of the characters were because they aren't in the movies.

    Some controversial Gundam thoughts.

Gundam F91 gives you all the standard plot points of a Gundam story condensed into a 2 hour movie. It is not the best Gundam story and has a very fast pace but it makes a good primer for what to expect in most Gundam stories.

Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket is a short 6 episode long OVA set near the end of the original Gundam show focusing on a civilian point of view. It is not a very good example of what to expect from a typical Gundam but it has a real good delivery of Gundam's anti-war message and seeing it without knowing much about the politics and events in Mobile Suit Gundam makes the main character more relatable.

What are some of your favorite ongoing manga?

My answers would probably change based on my mood and I'll probably forget some, but I think right now I'd go with:
    • Accept My Fist of Love
    • Asper Kanojo
    • Beauty and the Beast Girl
    • Don't Toy with Me, Miss Nagatoro
    • Dosanko Gyaru is Mega Cute
    • Extremely Straightforward Boyfriend and Girlfriend (NSFW)
    • Hey Boy, Let's Take a Break
    • Hinamatsuri
    • How to Treat a Lady Knight Right
    • I Fell in Love, So I Tried Livestreaming
    • Kaguya-sama: Love is War
    • Kaiju Girl Caramelise
    • Komi Can't Communicate
    • Machimaho (NSFW)
    • Murcielago (NSFW)
    • My Dress-up Darling
    • Oddman 11
    • Rokudou no Onna-tachi
    • Spy x Family
    • The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Love You
    • The Lackey and the Delinquent Leader in Love
    • Tonikaku Cawaii / Fly Me to the Moon
    • Watamote
    • Yancha Gal no Anjou-San
    • Yankee-kun and the White Cane Girl

Sadly only about half of that list has been licensed, but hopefully some of the others will start getting officially brought over soon so I can add them to my collection.

You read a lot of excellent romantic comedies!

Try the Cuckoo's Fiance, by the same author of Yamada and the 7 witches, as well as Flunk punk rumble.

Separate from that, I read most of what's going on in Jump, save Sports stuff.

Once you figure out its a mystery show amd not an action show it resets ypur expectations. I think its a cool change of pace that the way they defeat a villian is by making their argument illogical

Yeah, but most of these episodes are ‘man we need to write a snopes article!’ and, Jesus, just write the damn article already.

More Gundam stuff. A lot of Gundam memes come from Zeta Gundam and the movies ditches like all of them. Like the Star Wars prequels Gundam The Origin should be watched machete order, start with Mobile Suit Gundam and the stuff surrounding it and work your way up and watch The Origin right before Char's Counterattack.

Some of my favorite ongoing manga? Let's see here:

    - A Returner's Magic Should Be Special
    - Tower of God
    - Solo Leveling
    - Level 999 Villager
    - The Misfortunes of Local Knight Hans
    - Dad is a Hero, Mom is a Spirit, I'm a Reincarnator
    - The Wrong Way to Use Healing Magic
    - Exterminator
    - Goblin Is Very Strong
    - The Other World Doesn't Stand a Chance Against Instant Death

That's a lot of Korean comics now that I'm looking at it. Also isekai but I already knew that one, and it's mostly isekai that go in an interesting direction. Wrong Way to Use Healing Magic for example is about someone who can only use healing magic and are then taught how to use it in a way to heal all injuries to enable them to push themselves beyond physical limits. Also punching people while healing them, leaving no injuries but the full pain of a super strength hit.
