Like, in his first arc, he gets some pretty strong moments.

Also, it’s reslly hard to sell Zenitsu’s strong moments, because he literally sleeps through them and they don’t impact his character when he’s awake.

The Lion King music makes it work even better

E: Actually, let's be fair to Zenitsu as well:
Thunder God is a kind of god.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G8mBQsWJlFQ

Did they add the Lion King music to that scene or was it actually there originally

No, it's just the first hit on youtube I found of that scene. They added the music.

Yeah I'd really hesitate to say Usopp ever sucks, all the stuff with his pirates is great, at worst his early stuff is fine and they way they turn his personality traits into a strength in Thriller Bark is great.

Also I haven't seen the anime and watched that clip, so I had no idea Sogeking is a newtype. That's rad.

He's not as over the top about it as Zenitsu though I think? It's been a while (yes, I know this is understatement). Also, he's not written as being completely dead weight most of the time like Zenitsu. One strong point of One Piece's writing is that all of the weaker crew members have (useful) things they're very good at besides fighting.

Earlier Usopp's thought process is telling to calm down and think about how he can escape or stall for time till Luffy or Zoro can show up to save him. Then he finds out the stakes larger then him getting his ass kicked and there was a time limit and starts thinking about how to win. Zenitsu is just an audio assault of screeches about how he is going to die till he gets knocked out then he gets a brief cool moment and ends the fight.

This came up in the most recent chapter:
All the straw hats are beating up the bad guys in heroic fashion, cutting panel to panel one at a time, and then there's a beat panel with Nami, Usopp, and Chopper timidly surveying the battle with a "Nope!" look on their faces.

They know what they're here for, and it's not kicking ass.

Yeah, the only one I can think of where he's awake is when he wins the tea blocking match in rehab. Which is immediately undercut by his desire to smooth-talk the girl.

The dwarves being useless in the original is kind of core to the story IMO, they're entitled noble twats who think they should get Lonely Mountain and its treasures by birthright merely for showing up, while all the sacrifice involved in slaying the dragon is born by the men of laketown who got dragged unwillingly into the affair. And then the war happens because everyone knows the tiny party of noble brats can't hold the mountain full of treasure and everyone wants a piece of it now that Smaug is dead.

I kind of prefer something in-between? I'm gonna use some weird analogies here, but bear with me.

In the early Venture Bros. stuff, episodes tended to go back and forth on whether Doctor Venture was genuinely hopeless, or as capable as people expect but just too much of an irresponsible headcase to reliably put it to good use. I think the latter interpretation is a lot more entertaining? Consider the American version of the Office; there's two takes on Michael Scott, one is someone who's so insecure and desperate to be liked and respected that he's insufferable, and then there's the unhinged madman idiot version of the character. The first is relatable in a "there but for the grace of God go I" way, and the latter is the kind of 'lolrandom!" humor that doesn't really hold up past the initial shock of their antics.

So those are both humor examples, but I think it extends to other kinds of narrative as well. Characters who are just useless aren't very compelling to watch or read about, whereas characters who are inept because of personality flaws they may or may not overcome (depending on the style and message of the work) are.

I like the idea of the dwarves being genuinely capable enough to merit their boldness and boasting, yet also in way over their heads and too blinded by patriotism and revanchism to see it.

Ussop has a good and heartwarming character arc in his very first story. And continues to develop more in the Arlong, Little Garden, and Alabasta arcs before Water 7 solidifies him as one of the best characters in the series.

If Moebius Made Anime | The Beautiful art of Dragon's Heaven [1988] 10:11

Who needs story when an anime looks this pretty? Kenny lauderdale (me), reviews Dragon's Heaven, a beautiful anime from the 80s that history has almost forgotten. Moebius may have never lent his art to an anime, but if watched this & told me he didn't make it I wouldn't believe you. The best Mecha anime tend to get overlooked, but this ova is one of those anime that's so beautiful to look at that it may as well not even be mecha. Moebius's art style influenced anime artists so heavily in the 1980s that for a brief time, anime like this was indistinguishable from what it was paying respect to. Makoto Kobayashi was one of those artists.

Man I want to watch this, it looks so good

    Yeah about that:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FKBdeb6dmXI

(Though it was made in Hungary so technically not an Anime, but the influences are very clear).

That's neat, but I mean I'd like them to flesh stuff out a bit more. I know not everything in an MMO is exciting (oh lord I know) but it seems like they're just kind of breezing past stuff that maybe they shouldn't.

I mean, there's a lot to read into the development of the hobbit, but what's core to the story is that Bilbo is a child-sized everyman going on a magnificent adventure. It was written for children, so giving them a character they could identify with and emulate is what drives those decisions. Bumbling adults are there for them to save and other more capable adults are there to save them and both provide ethical lessons. Any read that doesn't start with that core premise is approaching the novel unfairly imo.
