To be honest, I've never gotten around to watching Fate. But it gets referenced so much that I read about the product line of the series just to know what was what. And then I started reading the fan wiki because some of the ways they adapt the various legendary or historical figures can be pretty interesting.

I definitely recommend at least watching UBW and Zero, because those are very well told

the various spinoffs don't reach those heights, but are for the most part enjoyable too (stay away from Last Encore, though)

and if you like the more unique takes on the historical figures, definitely look up their version of Florence Nightingale

which is somehow both incredibly inaccurate and also in some ways more accurate than the media portrayals of her during her life

    Thanks for the advice.

I did not watch it so I may be mistaken, but as far as i know its not an adaptation of Fate / Extra game, but a kinda sorta sequel to one of it's endings.

So yeah, probably a bad idea to watch it if you don't know too much about the franchise. I have no idea, why they even made this series instead of some proper adaptation of the main story.

Last Encore was explicitly stated to be something that fans who hadn’t played the original game could enjoy

and then it turned out to be an incomprehensible alternate-timeline post-bad-end story that even people who played the original game had trouble with

IIRC it was Nasu’s first time writing directly for TV and boy does it show

Haikyuu is in the last arc and honestly I wouldn't be surprised to see it end in a few chapters.
Like..I'm giving even odds to this game not even finishing, just smash ending during a rally at deuce or something. Actually resolving the rivalry doesn't seem as important to the conclusion as "they're still here, they're awesome, they get to keep playing just a little bit longer."

Eh, Zero was the one that began with 12 minutes of two dudes walking in a circle, seemingly just straight up emptying out the exposition reserves, but the thing to know about Fate, is that there is always fucking more exposition. I personally wasn't a fan of any of UFOTable's adaptations of the Fate stuff. They make things with gorgeous screenshots (and literally everything is covered in a haze of bloom). I lack the education in film analysis to adequately explain why their stuff rubs me so much the wrong way, but I think it's because there's such a harsh divide between all the random expositional dumps and dudes clutching their fists going "I have to be super, duper serious about this" and then the action scenes that are all flashing colors and bright lights that both start and end at almost total random, often with another long infodump to explain what happened. It's like an abridged Dragonball fight, where they don't keep cutting to the peanut gallery to have someone tell the audience how much power level everyone has... except that they do that all the fucking time too. And it's even worse when it's the characters themselves constantly having timeouts to do it.

Like if you take a UBW fight scene, the parts where it's actually animated are pretty spectucular, but it keeps stopping so they can have chit chats, until it just sort of arbitrarily stops and everyone goes home with nothing resolved. That keeps happening over and over, until the predetermined plot point where someone simply keels over at the end of the scene, after another pause to explain something else. Compare that kind of action scene to one where the script, action, sound direction, and pacing of the scene are all complementing each other and I will take the latter over the former every time. I think that it's the direction and writing, which is super sad to me because I love early UFOTable stuff. They were a studio that took a trashy, generic harem show about twins, and turned it into a coming of age action show about a detective in a polyamorous relationship fighting a cult of squid worshippers.

And then I started reading the fan wiki because some of the ways they adapt the various legendary or historical figures can be pretty interesting.

For example, Sasaki Kojiro. A person who has never actually existed outside of the tale of the legendary duel between him and Miyamoto Musashi. However, because that tale is so well-known, and age + recognition is a big part of what defines the capability to be a Servant, when he is summoned he is summoned as someone who plays the "role of Sasaki Kojiro" instead of the "real" Sasaki, resulting in his Class being Assassin instead of Saber. However, because parallel worlds are a thing in Fate, there is actually a True Sasaki Kojiro who IS a Saber. So there's the Fake Sasaki and Real Sasaki, with both being the same Servant but also completely different people.

Conflating myths and legends together affects more than a few other Servants too. Like Robin Hood, who is not the True Robin Hood but again just an amalgamation of the various legends ABOUT Robin Hood. Except yet again there is a True Robin Hood.

The various stories of Fate love to play around with different aspects of time/space and parallel worlds. Like Strange/Fake which has the whole True/False Servants, including another Jack the Ripper. Only this Jack the Ripper is not a barely-clad little girl, but an amorphous Berserker construct built from the stories, legends, and fear of Jack the Ripper with completely different abilities. Though in this case unlike the others there is no True or False Jack the Ripper, they're both Jack the Ripper while being completely different entities.

'Hole up a-minute. Sasaki Kojiro was a real person born in the Fukui prefecture. I think his remains are interred in Iwakuni. So, is that the fiction of the Fate universe that he wasn't real, or does the author make that claim?

Funny enough, Da Vinci is agender in Fate. They look like how they do because that's how they envision beauty in general. During Valentine's events in Grand Order they can both give and receive chocolate, despite the former being limited to women and the latter men.

Challenge my roommate and I have created:

any time we put on the Tower of God theme, either by the show itself or through a challenge much like "icing" someone, we have to drop what we're doing and
    a) assume a good, back-straight arms-extended shoulder-width push-up position and hold it through the intro
    b) when the house bass and heavy drums kick in, begin doing push-ups to the beat (preferably with as good of technique as possible rather than accurate rhythm, if you have to choose one)
    c) when the drums drop out into the quiet bridge again, resume aforementioned push-up position
    d) when drums/bass hit again for the last ~quarter of the theme, resume push-ups

the real burn sets in during the bridge because it turns out that's more like a plank than a rest break

    • Fate/Zero is a prequel to Fate/Stay Night; you don't need to know anything from FSN for it
i disagree with jumping into fate/zero without any f/sn familiarity. there's literally an episode devoted to a f/sn character that is completely disconnected from the actual story of fate/zero and only exists as fan service, and outside of that specific episode i feel like the protagonist is completely unlikable and hard to relate to or understand and his motivations are unknown until like episode 24/26 or something absurdly late which is somewhat ameliorated by actually knowing f/sn and having some idea of whats going on. it also completely spoils f/sn, if you care about actually playing f/sn or watching f/sn anime stuff

That’s true, but afaik there are birth and death records associated with Sasaki. What’s held in question are the details about his duel with Musashi (with some sources disputing it even happened). That concept of the legend begetting a real figure is pretty neat though.

I think my favorite of the Fate things is Edmond Dantes. Count of Monte Cristo was real, he carried out his vengeance, and the story is so popular that he himself became a Servant in the Avenger Extra Class. However, this Edmond Dantes, one year before succeeding in his own revenge, worked to kill three people who had put the Abbe who taught him in prison under false pretenses. By the end of it he's the bishop target as a Dead Apostle (Fate's version of vampire), and by using the Treasure of Monte Cristo he infuses himself with "the despair of those without God, the flames of Hell and Void, a power equal to that from the Age of Gods." This manifests as black flame capable of burning away not only flesh but magic and souls. He fights the vampire in the skies over Rome and succeeds in utterly destroying the vampire bishop so it ceases to exist forever. Before he himself can then be consumed, because at this point he's technically human, Abbe Faria's soul removes the Treasure from him and seals it away to save him, with the condition that he can only use it again when he becomes a creature as inhuman as a Dead Apostle.

Surprise, a Servant qualifies, and it becomes his third Noble Phantasm. His first is Enfer Chateau d'If, which embodies his escape from the legendary prison by accelerating him so fast he's able to escape any confines, including time and space, creating afterimages that attack as one. His second is Attendre Esperer, which can revive him or another person from even the brink of death with a boost to all parameters through being infused with the hope he embodied in the depths of despair while imprisoned.

Okay so some of the criticisms of Danmachi season 2 in this thread were perfectly reasonable.

I've still enjoyed it though, and that might be because I went in expecting the... low points, and was prepared to have to just sigh and murmur "fucking anime" under my breath at them.

That said, there's a lot of really great things about this season that I've enjoyed a lot, so while I am not going to give it a pass on some of the bad stuff, I am still glad I watched it.
