That story's been circulating the internet for years (and to my knowledge it's true) to the point where I'm pretty sure Bofuri is actually based on it

Edit: yup, the story of Shrek the Sheep dates to 2004. turns out the wolves part was entirely made up after the fact though, but at the same time lost sheep in New Zealand have Keas to deal with and those are basically airborne foxes when you're a lone sheep

Dont you do One Piece dirty like that

One Piece was literally one of the exceptions I had in my head.

Likewise I basically don't consider Full Metal Alchemist a shonen because it breaks just about every convention of the genre.

shonen is weird because it's both a genre descriptor and also a term for the publication demographic

so it's basically like saying, His Dark Materials was published as young adult fiction, but it's not following the same tropes as The Hunger Games

As for Bookworm, while I don't know about the light novels they're based on, the anime has shown Main to be consistently pretty self-centered. Like she's not a bad person but she is very much not a person for whom other people's troubles will stand out to her unless they are shoved in her face or overlap with her own personal motivations. It's kind of like her greatest character strength and weakness. She will get things done but not pay too much attention to other people.

I entirely pulled that Hunger Games:HDM::Shōnen battle manga:FMA comparison out of my head on the spot but the more I think about it, the more apropos it becomes

The faux-early-20th-century setting, the characters toiling both against Empire and an uncaring Supernatural from beyond, the rejection of many common tropes expected from the demographic, and so on

there are several of these stories of lost sheep with mountains of hair, and I might call the wild dogs claim more credible true for a more recent one from Australia that did the same thing

the greater point is, the meme created as a sort of stand-alone complex from this story has been around for a few years and almost certainly influenced Bofuri

"Shounen" is a demographic, covering a broad swath of genres

"Battle shounen" is a fairly specific genre

Sometimes people shorten the second to the first and expect context to make the meaning clear, which is not always the case!

    I fuckin love Nozaki-kun

I literally just read through this last week, and I don't know that I've laughed as much at something for a long while. I think I saw it recommended here under "romantic comedies where you know who the final couple is going to be", and sure, I guess, but honestly I am in _no_ hurry for any of the relationships to progress, I am just fine watching them all be really really dumb about stuff.

But the comic-related gags have been killing me dead:

The boxes gag killed me. Chiyo's sad "yay~" in the first episode was what sold me on the show generally, though; I think it was her VA's first main role.

I've read all of it and yeah there's lots of stuff there...but eventually the edginess and way too big cast really drags it down. I'm still not sure what happened in the climax of Re:

Also the way it handles queer characters is...not the best!

As someone who despite it's flaws liked the manga, I am deeply sorry for the suffering you sentenced yourself into, because every single season of TG anime is an abomination.

Zero was a novel originally, I think. Maybe a proper novel, maybe a light novel?

    so

Fate Stay Night (2006), Unlimited Blade Works, and Heaven's Feel are all based on the three different routes of the original visual novel
Fate/Zero is based on Gen Urobuchi's prequel (light) novel
Fate/Apocrypha is based on Yūichirō Higashide's spinoff light novel
Fate/Kaleid Liner Prisma☆Illya is based on a spinoff manga by Hiroshi Hiroyama
Fate/Extra Last Encore is a sequel to the Fate/Extra PSP game (it's a weird RPG with rock-paper-scissors combat) (note that it has no connection to the musou sequels to said game)
Fate/Grand Order - Absolute Demonic Front: Babylonia is an adaptation of the seventh chapter of the Fate/Grand Order mobile gacha game (the upcoming Camelot movie is based on the fifth chapter)
Carnival Phantasm is based on Eri Takenashi's Take-Moon gag manga
Today's Menu for the Emiya Family is based on a manga by TAa, and is very loosely in the same setting as the Fate/Hollow Ataraxia visual novel sequel to Fate/Stay Night (where everyone is alive and friendly and Lancer works part-time in a dozen shops)
The El-Melloi II Case Files anime adapts the fourth and fifth volume of Makoto Sanda's light novels of the same name, and is kinda-sorta a sequel to Fate/Zero

also the Tsukihime anime is a really bad adaptation of the Tsukihime visual novel, and the Garden of Sinners anime movies are based on a light novel series as well

I think that's all the Type-Moon animes? I might have missed some one-off shorts or something, I'm not sure. There's also a ton of properties that haven't made their way into anime yet.

It's almost like Naruto, like almost all shonen series, wasn't super well planned out.

They explained the dynamic in Bakuman: early on, a series won't know what will click with readers, so it's not uncommon for early elements to get superceded as the artist dials in their story based on feedback.

Bakuman is an extremely good watch/ read if you want to know how weekly series are produced, the stresses on creators, etc.

I was gonna recommend Love Lab if you enjoyed Nozaki-kun, another wacky high school romcom populated by absolute morons and animated by the same studio.

But then I remembered the literal blackface gag in that show so, uh, maybe not.

This Art Club Has a Problem has a similar premise to Nozaki-kun. Daily Lives, Daily Lives of High School Boys, and Wasteful Days of High School Girls have similar comedic vibes. The Devil Is a Part-Timer has similar character dynamics.

That reminds me of one thing i really miss from early naruto: The interesting tech blend they had going on. I wish that had continued (even if doing all the power wires etc must have been kinda hell - i remember the artist mentioning that Sauske originally had a fussy pendant thing, which he promptly got rid of the moment he realized he'd have to draw this SO MANY TIMES)

Side note, re-watching MHA and the stain ark just makes me think:There must be some really werid, and deeply hilarious tests to figure out some of the non obvious quirks.

The thing from Bakuman that stuck with me was when they were making a comedy manga and their editor was pointing out they could easily add some action scenes and get votes from battle manga readers in the weekly surveys. Looking at you Gintama, Medaka Box, Rosario + Vampire, M×0, and probably several other Jump comedies.

Yeah but frequently people point out the action/serious bits of Gintama as the best parts

Gintama did have good action stuff but it also had the Neo Armstrong Cyclone Jet Armstrong Cannon and humanboards.
