Gintama is full of hilarious scenes and surprisingly heartfelt moments

But the stuff that's bad is so so bad that I can't help but feel negatively towards the show as a whole, even if I sometimes take a look back at the greater stuff and still enjoy it

Gintama reminds me of Cromartie High School in that sometimes it goes all in on a very stupid joke premise that pays dividends, and sometimes that same impulse results in belly flopping into an empty swimming pool.

I think one of the reasons Gintama can belly flop so hard is it's constantly pulling a balancing act of sincerity and absurdity

It's very easy for one to end up undermining the other, and when that happens you just end up feeling nothing

Combine that dissonance with some sensitive subject matter and, well, you get a Yoshiwara In Flames arc

God I fucking love Gintama nonsense , it’s the only show that could show me a fucking still for 15 minutes while they complained about running out of money because of the op and big fight scenes and just make me laugh like a madman . That said as I grow older Madao became less funny and more existentially terrifying . Poor guy , I haven’t watched the final season so maybe he catches a break .

theres a lot of gay panic and some transphobia that makes me super bummed, but that's kinda par the course for a lot of anime

The thing from Bakuman that stuck with me was when they were making a comedy manga and their editor was pointing out they could easily add some action scenes and get votes from battle manga readers in the weekly surveys. Looking at you Gintama, Medaka Box, Rosario + Vampire, M×0, and probably several other Jump comedies.

And none of them do it REMOTELY as well as Beelzebub did.

I only ever saw the anime of this, so what I mainly remember is a rushed-feeling "the anime was cancelled, you're all fired" type of ending. Do you know if the manga version went on much further than the anime?

The gods are the base level enemies for Boruto though, lol. There are machines that let you pull off techniques people trained their entire lives to use, so it'd be like if Red Ribbon army soldiers could do the Spirit Bomb with a good enough gadget. The escalation is actually pretty, pretty scary!

Yeah there's nothing wrong with it, it's fiiine, but in a damning with faint praise way. It felt like a series made entirely of filler anime arcs from Naruto to me, which I guess makes sense given what Boruto is. The barest hints of a major arc might have been starting to show when I gave up.

Jeeze they're up to 150 episodes already. Where did I get up to... looks like somewhere around episode 50, when they were getting ready for chunin exams.

Anime apparently reached chapter 120 of 240 chapters, with several changes. As far as I checked people seem to regard the manga better (not just because of the anime's coverage).

Furuichi is my spirit animal in that series.

    12 Kingdoms extremely rules, yes.

Also the craziest thing about that show is that Yuka and Asano basically don't exist in the source material. Yuka had a very minor role, doesn't cross over, and is then only seen in like one flashback, and Asano is just straight up anime original.

Luckily whoever adapted the script was smart enough to realize that long, angst filled inner monologues featuring crippling self doubt are a lot harder to pull off in visual media, so they used those two characters to achieve basically the same effect.

12 Kingdoms rules. It's obviously got some budget issues, and the ending is super muddled because of various production issues, but it's still one of my all-time favorite series.

way back in high school I would take a trip to the mall on like the release date for every new dvd and me and another of my friends would watch it.

I love how it takes that standard alternate magical world concept and instead early on basically turns it into a survival story. She gets punched in the face by peasants and bitten by dogs and nearly dies of exposure! And it's super uninterested in having some cute boy come along to sweep her off her feet and rescue her. And her character development is fantastic, and it keeps progressing too, there's never like a "ok i've got my shit 100% together now" turning point.

Also the various beasty designs are cool, especially the sound design for them.

The anime kinda-sorta is that, from what I've seen of it. The manga opens with Boruto's graduation from the academy and him forming a 3-man team, similar to Naruto. Whereas the anime opens with him getting into the academy. So these first seasons of the anime are largely new stuff that takes place before the manga starts. Presumably this was to allow the manga to get a healthy lead, while also making an anime ASAP.
