so i've started watching boruto and it's nowhere near as bad as people led me to believe. honestly it's really cute and refreshing to have a low-stakes kid detective-type show after the end of shippuden/the last where, spoilers, they fight god and then god's god and then god's brother

Yeah there's nothing wrong with it, it's fiiine, but in a damning with faint praise way. It felt like a series made entirely of filler anime arcs from Naruto to me, which I guess makes sense given what Boruto is. The barest hints of a major arc might have been starting to show when I gave up.

Jeeze they're up to 150 episodes already. Where did I get up to... looks like somewhere around episode 50, when they were getting ready for chunin exams.

The anime kinda-sorta is that, from what I've seen of it. The manga opens with Boruto's graduation from the academy and him forming a 3-man team, similar to Naruto. Whereas the anime opens with him getting into the academy. So these first seasons of the anime are largely new stuff that takes place before the manga starts. Presumably this was to allow the manga to get a healthy lead, while also making an anime ASAP.

Oh lmao well that explains a lot. That feels like a great way to sabotage your series, having 70 episodes of filler before the real start.

My wife and I never got around to finishing The Wallflower, so I suggested continuing it yesterday and my wife said that while she liked it, the designs for the guys were "too shoujo" and so she was having trouble getting into it. Apparently guy designs any further than Ouran Host Club are too far for her on the shoujo scale.

So instead I ended up rewatching the first episode of My Next Life as a Villainess with her.

I watched the first season of Vinland Saga with my dad since we both like historical stuff.
We both agree Thorkell is the best.
Also dang that show had a good soundtrack.

Definitely grab the manga if you liked the show.

Also, rewatching i'm 110% convinced this is taking place in like, 2200s, 2300s - the line about tech development is that if it hadnt been for quirks, people would be taking Interstellar Holidays by now.

Beelzebub was a great action/comedy that lost balance towards the end, lost popularity, then was hastily axed. The comedy was so on point though, it was amazing. It got an epilogue series which tied things up nicely though. Manga was way better than anime.

Boruto's problem is it's just more Naruto filler arcs, which are bad. The ~60 episodes between the end of Part 1 and beginning of Shippuden were a chore to get through, and this is just more of that, forever. Everyone should watch episode 65 when Naruto and Sasuke fight Momoshiki though, that fight rules.

the animation in the big scenes of naruto was always good, and has gotten better

but you could also tell they spent basically jackshit on most episodes

boruto at least looks better on average, and naruto and sasuke are actually realized characters now, but the whole series is just filler with more dirtbag kids

Unless it's a habit that you already enjoy, don't watch ANY of the 2 million episode long shonen shows. Read them if you're interested in the story and maybe watch certain episodes for big pop off fights. Something like My Hero is the exception, because they actually pace it similarly to the manga.

I hope MHA becomes the modern formula. Use 2-4 chapters per episode, and when you run out, go on hiatus for 6 months! Let the mangaka work! It's okay to have seasons.

It seems to have somewhat become the modern formula. There are other less popular shonens that are getting adapted like that, just usually most are on a two year break between seasons instead of MHA subtimes sub one year breaks.

Do you think the show will completely avoid the plot of the manga? I highly doubt it will. So ultimately you're watching filler, the show, that can't even be a fun ninja slice of life of its own design because it is following in the footsteps of the manga: Naruto Again but with worse art and characters.

The only worthwhile thing about Boruto was the one shot where Himari awoke the Byakugan because Boruto was being a shit, took out her dad AND Kurama with a single strike so he missed his big inauguration, then hunted down her hidden brother who failed to realize Byakugan can see through objects.

That was the most hilarious thing I've seen in a long time

yeah like one piece is great but it could be so much tighter non-weekly

If it's even possible to cut down (in a future "Kai version") all the reaction faces they rely on to pad the minutes, I'd probably watch it.

Finally bought and read the 8th manga for Made in Abyss. Can't ever have a happy moment in that series.

Also read the 14th and 15th manga for Watamote. I really like it. The series has progressed in such a good way from the cringy start. Also makes me a little depressed cause of where I am at in life.

Also bought the Reincarnated as a Slime manga I was missing so I'll probably read them sometime this week and if not then this weekend.

Princess Connect is one of the best shows this season. It has no real plot to speak of and doesn't give a damn about the source material except in the most vague way.

I'm here for the reaction faces.

I followed the Beelzebub manga, rather than the anime which I dropped after a couple of episodes.

As others have said, the quality fluctuated a bit at the end in terms of mix of action/comedy but man oh man, most of the time it was on point and it was incredible when it was.
