Princess Connect is one of the best shows this season. It has no real plot to speak of and doesn't give a damn about the source material except in the most vague way.

I'm here for the reaction faces.

I can't believe they funded an anime for the sole purpose of giving us 12 episodes worth of Kyaru faces, it's great.

One Piece has a terrible anime adaptation with some okay-ish to good movies.

As for Junji Ito stuff, World of Horror came out awhile ago. (An Ito-inspired little narrative rouge like RPG. It's pretty good.)

I would amend that to say, the One Piece anime is best consumed as a supplement to the manga, certain things are improved with voice acting, animation and music and when it needs to it rises to the occasion most of the time. Like any of the big fights or emotional moments, because the actors never falter or are miscast for the most part. It is a slog to watch week to week at times, so just find out when things are animated and watch those episodes or scenes.

I usually take huge 6month plus breaks and then catch up . Works better for me.

Yeah that also works because watching it in blocks takes the slow pace out of the equation, however if you're a fan of the story you're depriving yourself of something to miss out on the performances went it counts. But week to week and the majority of the animation, it can be a rough sit.

I was so busy reading stuff from the library that I fell behind in the manga and light novels that I actually purchased. Instead of buying a whole stack of stuff I wasn't reading, I just halted purchasing them until I caught up. Unfortunately, that let some of them go out of print. When I saw that was happening, I went back to buying the ones I really wanted to see through. One of the Haruhi light novels is over $150 to get in physical at this point, so I had to go with the ebook for that one...

Anyway, one of the things I bought without reading was the end of Claymore. Now that the library is closed, I've been reading all this stuff for the first time. Claymore I started fresh and have been blazing through the whole series this week. By volume 20, this has gotten to the point of "Oops! All Akiras!" It's pretty, pretty insane.

Speaking of Claymore, apparently they were releasing some older manga online weekly(?) right at the beginning of last year(?)
    https://mangaplus.shueisha.co.jp/titles/100007

If anyone are interested, the first 3 chapters of those manga and the latest 7 chapters are available to be followed weekly. Most of them are currently at around 60 something chapters now I suppose

I probably should read the Claymore manga at some point. I watched the anime a few weeks back. I quite liked it but the last few episodes were very much anime original episodes.
Thought the character designs were pretty pleasing as well.

Claymore isn't a perfect manga, but it's a very damn good iteration on the idea of "Berserk-style fantasy gothic action horror meets Tsutomu Nihei-style cybergothic biohorror, and we turned it into a battle manga without compromising that tone too badly"

I highly endorse reading Claymore. The power level escalation gets a little ridiculous near the end, and there's some moments of quasi-sexual stuff that are bit gross (though given the premise, surprisingly not as many as you'd think!), but other than that I think it's a great manga. All of it is actually in the Viz's Shonen Jump vault

Yeah for as much nudity as there is in Claymore, most of the time it feels pretty nonsexual.

I don’t know if there are any Book-Offs close to you (there are a few in the US) but they’re great for finding OOP manga & light novels. https://www.bookoffusa.com/

They’re currently closed for the ‘Rona however...

Gungrave was sold to me totally blind with a heads up of "don't look up the plot or the games at all, don't watch the first episode because that spoils the whole thing, just assume it's a crime syndicate gangster film" and that was an incredible experience

If you are not familiar, watch it exactly like that

    like

the only two other anime that really come close to capturing the absurd tenacious and unwavering conviction of humanity when facing oblivion are gurren lagann and netero v. mereum in HxH
and they all three go about it VERY differently, but are all completely believable and massively impactful

often the exploration of the concept feels trite or tropey, but man...

Saikano captures the tenacious and unwavering spirit of humanity very well.

Unfortunately it's not in a positive way, because humanity is terrible.

I watch the news, I find humans plenty existentially terrifying.

If we’re talking about anime from yesteryear that examine the terrible nature of humanity I’m going to recommend Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash. A High School class wakes up in a fantasy world complete with classes, levels, and of course monsters. They have no memory of their prior lives but quickly find it’s kill or starve in the harsh world they live in, complete with permanent death. Their first goblin kill has all the horror and weight that taking the life of another intelligent being should.

It’s adapted from a light novel series and so far only has one season, but I think it’s a powerful watch.

This is more about the light novel but I really like how the group gets stronger through a learning experience and not a RPG game mechanic that the world runs on.

I'm only a few episodes into Grimgar, because that show is indeed pretty heavy. I'd like to finish it at some point, but it's no longer available on Crunchy here.

I did pic up Diary of our days at the Breakwater, which yes, I will watch all of a slice of life about fishing, thank you very much.

Dorohedoro showed up in the Netflix phone app with a release date of 28/5 when I searched for it, so hopefully that holds true.

I watched the entirety of the first episode of Ergo Proxy and I think I understood about half of it?

It’s the half where there’s a detective girl and her robot friend trying to learn about a virus that breaks Asimov’s rules or whatever

The monster stuff, the random talking statues, and most of the rest of it seemed really out of place

But I suppose I will press on and see if I get answers

Gonna follow Inuyasha and Sesshomaru’s daughters apparently.

I didn't see the 's' at the end of daughters and though the series ended WAY differently than I thought it would
