Their faces just look unnaturally soft. Like if I chucked a pebble at their cheeks it would just get stuck and sink in. The designs for Seven Deadly Sins give me that same feeling

I found Beyond the Boundary to be incredibly dull, to the point that I gave up on it, as well-animated as it was.

A Silent Voice is a goddamn masterpiece. Very rough to watch at points, though.

    Kaguya episode 4 (last week's; I don't have a Funi subscription):
Poor Hayasaka is long-suffering but devoted. How the actress bounces from calm cool maid to flirty HS girl to bubbly gyaru was pretty great.
Shirogane calling out Kaguya in her class becoming a news event with actual (in school) media attention that flies around the school had me in stitches.
Chika is great in all things Chika. Her switching sides to Iino mid-argument was great.

Really just everything had me guffawing out loud. A much needed infusion of joy. The seiyu are super talented and on point here.

Bakarina was some strong fluff this week. Also a joy to watch.

I'm unconvinced the kaguya manga is ever going to commit to it, but
hayasaka x fujiwara is still the most powerful ship ever invented

No one ship should have that much power

At the very least, it'd be cool for it to have some queer representation, and Hayasaka seems like a good candidate for that.

I think the strongest argument in favor of it is just
If you're gonna pair most people up, who the fuck could you pair up with Hayasaka or Fujiwara except each other? They'd run rampant over anyone else.

Also Aka is a very intelligent, liberal dude, who obviously thinks a lot of the gender dynamics and tropes of romance stories are BS. Him just randomly including a queer romance in his mainstream manga seems very possible.

The strongest argument against unfortunately is
Most gay stuff - unless it's strictly subtextual and can fly under the radar, or played purely for comedy - is still basically a no-go for mainstream manga publishers. I kinda get the feeling that Aka did try to introduce them as a ship, and then his editors shut it down, and now it'll never be mentioned again.

So with the Villainess anime this totally flew over my head until this episode but
The student council president is also a reincarnation, isn't he? That explains why he has more presence as compared to he was in the game, and also why he seems to have had a ton of odd reactions to Caterina. Most of the cast at this point is pretty different from their game counterparts except for the blonde prince, pretty boy, and Maria, but Caterina is like literally 180 what her original personality was like. So he'd be pretty suspicious of "you are literally nothing like the character in the game so are you...?"

whole ramble on how most anime that people tag as "cyberpunk" is more post-cyberpunk

as a literary genre, by around 1989 the original Western cyberpunk authors had run out of things to build with that particular LEGO kit, and all moved on from cyberpunk to do other science fiction work less confined by the tropes they'd just finished playing with, and in terms of innovation the core cyberpunk genre was a couple years dead by the time Snow Crash played a parodic fiddle 'pon its grave (albeit ripe to be exhumed for Hollywood and video games to dissect and examine for years to come, but let's face it, I imagine even Cyberpunk 2077 in 2020 will say very little that hadn't already been said in Omni magazine 35 years ago)

and even most late '80s-early '90s anime that does play with cyberpunk examines very different themes and aspects of humanity that the Western genre did, while also tweaking the aesthetic and adding new features extremely rapidly - both Ghost in the Shell and Akira are prime examples of this evolutionary radiation. did some of this anime limit itself to stuff seen exclusively in literature? kind of, but even Cyber City Oedo 808 abandons all pretense of genre purism by the third episode

long and short of it is, OG cyberpunk was a dinosaur, agile for its time but doomed to be outpaced, and it evolved into birds

    You mean Cyberbirds?

Well, most recently in the manga:
Hayasaka transitioned from maid to her own person, so I feel like there's a lot more room to explore her character now. I'd like to see her with the main cast more, rather than just attached to Kaguya.

Hayasaka x Fujiwara started after the vacation arc, when I think Ai was chasing Chika down to kiss her to get back at Kaguya, and was mostly being played as a one of joke. The thing with Aka-sensei though, is very very frequently one of jokes end up getting called back later, and developing into full blown plot points.

With the main cast's dynamic, they'd have to introduce more male characters if they wanted to go non-queer pairing for the girls, so I also put Chika X Ai as "not impossible."

Separate from that, in episode 4, this scene:
is blowing up a bit in meme-dom?

    Regarding The Ship
it actually goes back farther than that. Fujiwara's never expressed attraction to any other characters...but she thinks Kaguya's butler is super handsome and cool. Kaguya's butler is a cross-dressing Hayasaka.

I wish they'd do more Ippo series. I've heard the manga has some mixed quality especially later on, but I'd still like to see the series when Ippo gets to the world stage and while I'm getting more into manga than I used to, the reason I love the Ippo anime series is the sound and the movement that I wouldn't get in a manga. I'm rewatching it now for the millionth time (Ippo is probably my favorite anime, and just show in general to be honest)

In other probably not news generally but news to me, World Trigger is getting a second season! I understood why the manga stalled when it did, obviously the author's health is more important, but it was fun and I'm glad it's back.

I also hope the third season of Log Horizon is as good as the first. The anime is good and it's premise/setting is probably my favorite of that genre.

I tend to watch 2 non-seasonal shows at the same time. 1 out of the 2 shows has been a KyoAni show for the last few shows I watched so I figure I might as well continue that. I have to pick something from the list below. Think I will watch A Silent Voice once I am done with Ergo Proxy but after that it becomes tricky to pick something. Any shows that I should give priority to? Otherwise I might just throw a random number generator at it and pick something that way.
    • Clannad
    • Haruhi
My vote is for these two, but when watching Haruhi, make sure you watch it in broadcast order. Also the movie takes place after the series.

And straight up skip the Clannad movie; they tried to condense the series into a couple of hours, which meant that you get all the down notes with none of the happier stuff to balance it out.

If you watch Haruhi, in season 2, when you get to an episode named "Endless Eight"
Do a little Googling about it.
    Absolutely do not.

K-On is a show about hanging out, having a good time, and occasionally playing music when the mood strikes. I can't imagine a better show to watch for the first time right now, when we can't hang out and we're mostly having a bad time of it. It's not always about depth...

Finally caught up on the thread, so now I can say that this company also animated one of my favorite shows as a kid, Robby the Rascal (aka Cybot Robotchi). There are no clips on Youtube, but the whole 'movie' is uploaded there in parts. It felt like about 4-5 episodes long, so it's probably cobbled together from a dozen episodes of the original. Not going to link the full show, but here's the theme song I guess!

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ey4Lb2pkjV8

The music is great, in that goofy 80's kid show way. Every 'episode' has at least one song, if not a couple, and maybe a remix/reuse of an earlier one later on or something. Apparently the composer did a ton of other anime localizations from the time period, and just a ton of other stuff.
