    Neither could Ging!

Ging might have! Gon decided to just skip the part of the tape that talked about his mom so we'll never know!

Ging barely gives a shit about himself let alone Gon or anyone else

Yeah I think it's less a mimic ability and more that he just recreates the moves from scratch because he's really good at punching.

It's what he tells Pariston. That it's specifically punching.

    I trust neither of them

I read the first volume of Otherside Picnic. It's a light novel series, though it's not nearly as lightweight as something like the Bakarina stories. I think I read a very amusing interview with the author a while ago, and I saw that apparently the series is now getting an anime adaptation and so I tried out the first volume. It's actually pretty decent!

The basic premise is that two girls separately find passageways from the normal world into a weird sort of liminal space, like one part the upside down, one part shinto land of the gods, one part the shimmer from Annihilation, with a healthy dash of Japanese internet creepypasta tossed in. So they end up teaming up to A) look for a lost girl who might be in there, and B) getting paid suspiciously generously to bring out any weird artifacts they find. But then they start to lose control over when they're transported over, and then creepy human-shaped things start trying to like talk their way into their apartments.

It's always kind of adventure horror, it never descends all the way down into being more than like fun creepy, but some of the monsters and scenarios definitely had me going "ooh nice that's creepy." The anime could be good if executed well and if it goes for better character designs, the novel cover is pretty meh.

It's also technically yuri, which I'm normally a sucker for, but this felt super tacked-on and didn't really do anything for me at all. Maybe that element gets better written in later volumes, I dunno. I'll definitely check out the anime when it comes out, at any rate.

A trap is for fish: when you've got the fish, you can forget the trap. A snare is for rabbits: when you've got the rabbit, you can forget the snare. Words are for meaning: when you've got the meaning, you can forget the words.

Like the way the power system of Hunter x Hunter works there's theoretically nothing stopping Gon from creating a Bungee Gum ability that has all the powers of rubber and gum. It's just that you want to focus on what's compatible with your personality because then you can more efficiently build it up faster and stronger. Same reason why most people just make one or two abilities instead of spending their time creating a dozen, that's a sucker's game.

So Gon makes a "Punch Good" ability because that's what he's good at.

And then Ging is soooooo talented at "Punch Good" that he can just develop any Punch technique in pretty much no time at all.

I read the first volume of Otherside Picnic when they were giving it away for free last month and I enjoyed it a bunch. The creepypasta stuff was pretty spooky and effective, and the writing/translation felt engaging. Romance was kind of understated but it's part of a continuing story and I heard it comes more into focus later so that's okay I suppose.

The character designs seemed fine? I thought the cover looked pretty cool.

    i finished escaflowne
i have thoughts about the ending
We don't really have a sense of Hitomi wanting to go back to her life on Earth, especially considering she just left to return to Gaea and help Van like 2 episodes prior, so we just needed like a scene when she returned to earth where she's hugging her friend and her mother and really happy to be back and then a scene in the final episode where she's like "I don't want to leave my friends and family behind" and I think it would have landed for me. But as it was I didn't really get why she was returning to Earth other than that was the thing that had to happen now, which felt like it undercut the whole "true love" thing even though the point was that they would be connected forever anyways
good show! relentless pacing! i should watch the movie now right

I wanted to start a new show since I finished all the ones I had been watching. Decided to take another crack at Mob Psycho 100, which I watched the first episode about a year or so ago and didn't care for much. It is immediately better from episode 2 on. Reigen is allowed to not just be the butt of the joke for the entire runtime, we get a better sense of Mob's deal and the side characters start existing. The three episode test is generally a good practice, but a premiere that just does nothing for you or rubs you the wrong way is real bad when you're focused on other stuff. Looking forward to continuing this very soon.

oh and of course for those not familiar with the Soviet cosmic horror canon (of which Annihilation is also strongly derived) the title Otherside Picnic is a straight up reference to Roadside Picnic, the original novel that basically created the trend (and also directly inspired STALKER)

Domestic Girlfriend is bad, but it is legitimately bad in a way you kind of can't stop. I dunno if it's sunk cost fallacy or like watching a trainwreck but you just can't look away.

I've considered trying to read Domestic Girlfriend manga, as I do read trashy stuff from time to time, but it's got a bit more chapters than I'd normally read and I don't think I could tolerate the constant drama bombs.

The giant misunderstanding drama bomb in the middle of Hetakoi was a bit too much for me, and that was just the one bomb.

Edit: Don't Google Hetakoi at work. The author is great at character expressions (though sadly she passed away from heart disease a few years ago), but due to being based around hot springs it has a ton of nudity and one of the more outrageous meet-cutes for the MCs that I've seen.

Apparently this didn't actually happen. Kazuki Akane (the director) was asked about the rumored episode count cut in an interview after Escaflowne got likenesses rescued by Funimation, and his response was they tried to plan thing pretty carefully, and he couldn't remember what would be such a huge, story pacing altering shift happening in the production.

Now, ironically, this actually ended up happening to the Akane's most recent anime, Stars Align!. It was planned to have a total of 24 episodes, but as the end of the first season approached the production pulled the plug on it at the last minute for some reason. He says he still trying to find away to give the story some kind of proper conclusion.
