Glad I finally got around to watching A Silent Voice. Excellent movie.

Some parts of it are really damn rough to watch though.

I'm slowly making my way through Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju. There's an interesting sort of unique queer subtext to it that I find intriguing. At this point I'm definitely comfortable saying it's intentional.

Most of the series is one long flashback, going through this older Rakugo performer's life, which he's relating to a couple of other characters. So as you'd expect there's parts with him narrating, but then just long stretches where the story unfolds in the moment. Standard stuff.

So like his narration is very much like, I grew up, made friends with this other performer, got my first girlfriend but eventually we broke up because she had to go back to the country... The story that he as a narrator wants to tell is perfectly heteronormative. And he's this very like stern, non-nonsense unemotive Japanese old guy who was born in the 20s or 30s who's now a patriarch in his field. He's kind of a cold bastard, really.

But so then like the non-narrated bits, the visual storytelling, contain all these little bits of like gay subtext and coding. Him as a kid, blushing as he sneaks peeks at his fellow male student without a shirt on. His obvious lack of sexual interest in his girlfriend and lack of concern towards women in general, and a kind of confused inability to share other men's interest in women. His dislike - read: jealousy - of certain male acquaintance's girlfriends. He borders on downright misogynistic. He'll think about how maybe he should get married, but it's very much like him thinking about moving on to another stage of his life, being of that historic era where marriages were still more of a job description than inherently something romantic. And so you start to pick up on like WHY he seems so distant, so uninterested in the normal lives of the people around him. His queerness partly explains why he's such a prickly old bastard and deepens the tragedy of his story, but it also doesn't really try for any sort of like queer catharsis moment - he's still a prickly old bastard, still absolutely resistant to any sort of pity.

It's kind of too slow-paced and deliberate to really be a great binge-watch, but it really does deserve its reputation.

I definitely see Bon as either gay or pan, leaning on gay.

I do think the show is absolutely amazing except for one little detail near the end that is kind of fucked up in a way I don't think the story realizes how fucked up it is? And I think the show adaptation definitely realized it because they absolutely try to breeze past it as much they can.

Joshiraku is good and everyone should watch it.

It's definitely not for everyone, but I feel like the first episode should be given a shot to see if it is for you. Just reading a description doesn't really do it justice.

The author had invested in 3D modeling in a big way as the next big thing in manga, with predictable results - the fallout had him become rather misanthropic as a result.

that seems like a really weird reason to randomly become misogynistic, seems more likely bitterness at rejection and failure brought forth underlying beliefs that were kept hidden before.

    Bakarina this week:
    All the feels.

Kaguya ep. 5 from last week:
Poor Kashiwagi and Fujiwara. Their trials are long-suffered, but hilarious to the audience.

Also looks like actual plot with Iino at the end, but it veers back into comedy.

E: Actually, Railgun was real good this week. There have been episodes sporadically, but the main arc seems to be over, and the 2nd cour looks like filler/gaiden/non-canon.

I mostly know that writer from watching a bit of Inuyashiki

There's something about it that really gave me the creeps, like

Yes, technically the bad guys were portrayed as very bad and the good guy was unequivocally good

But there was so much relishing in the bad guys' actions that it made me deeply uncomfortable, and I stopped before it got to any sexual violence - it really felt like it would head that way.

I don't dig the gatari series that much, but yeah that scene is great.

And uh, I guess my favorite moment would be the final scene of Utena? I don't know, picking a single favorite is hard, but the Utena ending was pretty fucking perfect imo.

Yeah, I hear ya on that. A concept that’s stuck with me is to question who the camera seems to be agreeing with. Is the author lingering on moments that are ostensibly bad things we shouldn’t agree with? Is the show giving us a peek into the girls’ side of the bath house even while it’s doing slapstick violence to the pervert character who wanted to peek in the first place? Stuff like that.

It’s what got me to drop SAO like a live grenade, for instance.

I'm a big fan of the scene in Stand-Alone Complex where Batou takes on a whole spec-ops squad himself... and then the Tachikomas show up to help.

Shifts from just a cool-ass fight to something with real pathos.

Been looking at shows/movies I rated a 9 or 10. There are a lot of moments I love but I am not sure if I can really pick a specific scene as my absolute favourite in that regard.

Think I will go with the scene when the riders of Rohan arrive to aid Gondor. Best moment right there.

It's probably not my favorite, but I'm tired right now and all that comes to mind is Rock Lee vs. Gaara.

Which is impressive since I haven't seen it in forever and never even finished the original Naruto, let alone any sequel series.
