so when I say this I hope it carries weight: the promised neverland season 2 is my exception to that rule. it’s so insultingly bad it retroactively ruins the true genius of the first season. season 1 is worth watching but really truly pretend it ended there; the taste in my mouth is so bitter it makes me wary of every future anime I’ll enjoy just in case the subsequent followup could possibly maybe be even as slightly disappointing as tpn’s second season
Yeah, it gets worse after first arc (shown in the first season), but it's not, like, terrible, it still is mostly good, and even at it's worst I consider the story to be decent. I think reading the manga until the end is a good idea if you enjoyed first season of the anime.
And this stupid sage reincarnation thing is practically a shot for shot remake of that demon lord reincarnation thing from a couple years back, except sub out the horny mother who wants to fuck her reincarnated god child for... nothing. He literally just spawns as a teenager godling with infinite power level and decides to go to high school and perv on teenagers, I guess. God, I want this trend to go away.
Don't think about this too often...
I suppose CLAMP, Kaori Yuki (Angel Sanctuary and Count Cain), and Araki. Just off the top of my head
EDIT: Oh, definitely Tsutomu Nihei
But one pick for me would be Urasawa for the character work.
Did they make Gojo smaller and meeker in the anime? I always got the impression he was taller than most of his class, and was more of the quiet stoic type.
Eiji Masuda for My Monster Secret. Facial expressions and comedic pacing are great in that manga.
Kaoru Mori, 100% hands down
- Tsubasa Yamaguchi draws Blue Period, which I think is the best designed and laid out comic I've read in years. Like I wanna make a whole effortpost on how incredible chapter 49 is.
- Kaoru Mori, she of Otoyomegatari and Emma
- Kentarou Miuru, as mentioned. That two parter background story of Serpico and Farnese's backstory is some of the best looking, best designed comics art I've ever read.
- Tatsuki Fujimoto, of Chainsaw Man, is real real good
- Makoto Yukimura, especially his work in Planetes.
- Tatsu Yukinobu basically superpowers the nothing-much story of Dandadan with his sheer artistic kinetic energy into something hilariously fun.
- Torajiro Kishi, he of Virgins Empire and MakiMaki, can draw some remarkably horny art without ever feeling like he's tracing porn, nor does he get distracted by the sexy over the emotional core of his stories.
- ONE kinda deserves special mention as someone whose art is fine at best, but he elevates the hell out of it through incredible panel design.
- Shuzo Oshimi draws fucked up psychological manga like Flower of Evil and Inside Mari
- Tatsuya Endo only has Spy x Family but they're definitely a new contender
- Makoto Hagino is definitely in a slightly lower tier too, but I thought her art in A Tropical Fish Yearns for Snow was fantastic, as much as I got pissed at the writing never really committing.
- Makoto Ojiro has pretty good character art, but some really nice page design. Some of their other stuff hasn't done much for me but Insomniacs After School is great.
- Nico Tanigawa's page design in Watamote has never been anything special, but the character art has really improved a ton, and helps do a lot of character work. Like the way Asuka is just subtly hotter than anybody else in class, or how Tomoko has gradually started to get more fashionable and take better care of herself.
edit: And urasawa obviously, his panel layouts are famous
Shinobu Ohtaka of Magi and Orient does some insanely detailed work.
Yasuhira Hara's Kingdom has similarly insane detail.
In terms of paneling action and flow Eiichiro Oda is very good.
There are some real gemstone artists, you just have to dig a little.
Satoshi Kon
Yoshiyuki Sadamoto

oh and q hayashida of course
Does the show do the same thing as the manga where it's 99% cute and about relationships and people being Really Enthusiastic About Cosplay and then for the other 1%, all of a sudden it switches to being all about showing us underwear? Because other than that it feels like a show that my kids would probably like, but that 1% is really something I could do without.
Most are only familiar with the anime but the paneling in DragonBall and Z is exactly why those works worked.
Yeah, thinking about it some more I guess there'd still be a certain amount of editing needed to get it to be just down to the "how to make / appreciate costumes / people" parts, because the "this costume I'm making is fairly risque" elements of the plot do matter.
I mean the very first costume has them talking, at length, about the fucked up porn game its based on
edit: Also Kaoru Mori, thanks for reminding me.
I know, right? Definitely feels like they took a risk with new territory for the franchise, but I'm glad they did, it's paying off so far.
And high five to whoever decided to make Angoramon proverbs a once per episode thing.
