I think Kindle Unlimited has a bunch of manga on it, but don't know what specifically is on it. It's also connected to Comixology through some kind of dark magic that I don't know the specifics of.

I wish it was as easy to legally binge manga as it is anime. Aside from Jump I'm not aware of any sub based options there.

Crunchyroll has some manga options but I always forget it exists and thus have no idea if it has an east mobile interface or not.

Watched the first two episodes of Dorohedoro. That's pretty cool!

but why not just cover up a breast instead of not having a nipple, that just looks weird

So they can add the nipple to a blu-ray release?

Is that a thing? While we're at it, why are anime blu-rays so much more expensive, especially series

    yes it's a thing
the blurays are expensive because price gouging

Ah, so it's tradition. Back when anime was more niche, I could understand how they got away with charging that much for the DVDs, smaller batches were made etc.
But goddamnit man, even the Ghibli stuff has like, 30-50% weeb tax on it

Farther than that in Japan. I think companies first released stuff intended for rental stores but also let people buy at the high price rental stores paid if they wanted. Nerds bought it at the high price and, well, the companies definitely didn't want to lose that high price they had gotten used to and kept it up even when VHS cassettes got replaced by DVDs

The Crunchyroll reader is terrible and the images are tiny. It's shame it's the only way to keep up with certain series.

I use the crunchyroll manga app for Knights & Magic, Space Brothers, and some various Honkai manga, but it's a really terrible buggy app

Kuroitsu did, in fact, dial the horniness way down and is basically just straight up office comedy this week.

Including a final post-credits punchline that basically anyone in development will recognize.

They were pretty pricey over here until streaming came along. They had to drop prices to make do. I remember how bad it was buying DVDs with 2-3 episodes each when they could have held way more than that (and they were super expensive)

I feel like the anime dvd market died off well before anime streaming was a thing. It definitely had a .com style bubble that took out several companies when it burst. As for why it’s expensive now? Well even back in the day Bandai was overcharging for gundam so I’m not terribly surprised that hasn’t changed. But otherwise it’s all just an economy of scale right? Like anime is bigger than ever but I think in general physical media sales are down since you can just stream everything. So physical anime is an even smaller piece of an already small pie so you have to make more each sale.

Thankfully, most companies aren't Aniplex here. Discotek's releases are almost unreasonably cheap, I got Kimagure Orange Road TV in its entirety for less than $40.

I guess I stopped buying anime around 2010ish when Netflix and Hulu started getting more titles. I can remember buying all of cowboy bebop or FLCL was totally overpriced. One of the last purchases I made was the DVD box set of Bebop and it was around 100 bucks I wanna say.

Woe to those who collected all of DBZ on tape, I wonder what a full collection cost at retail back then

If you pre-order on Right Stuf right after the pre-orders open up they tend to be like $5 less than after street date, too.

Anime gouging really became apparent as tv shows started releasing season sets.

Yeah, I bought one show on a non-season set and the price was beyond outrageous. My brother bought both Gundam Seed and Seed Destiny disc by disc. He should qualify for damages in a class action lawsuit. Season sets are way more reasonable, I'm glad to own stuff like Bebop and Outlaw Star.

anime disk prices are also probably inflated because they're inflated in japan even worse, collectors over there get REALLY gouged

Anime collectors in Japan are enough to defeat the idea that free markets organize efficiently.

For many years I bought a lot of anime specifically because of how nice the packaging was, had some neat pack-ins, or were limited edition. Most of the time they were series I actually liked but sometimes I bought them solely because how it looked. The last anime BD/DVD I bought was Cowboy Bebop Premium BD set back in 2014 unless I bought something during The Right Stuff Christmas sales but I doubt it. Between streaming and lack of interest in owning any physical media outside of CD's or LP's of a few very specific artists I just don't buy anime on disc anymore.

That Cowboy Bebop BD set I bought in 2014. I, uh, have never actually watched it on disc. Maybe someday. Probably not. I mean I've seen the show at least 3-4 times on TV in the past 20 years.

I have a terrible habit of buying BD's and just never watching them. I did actually watch the vast majority of anime DVD's I bought 10-20 years ago because those were the days when most of what I watched was fansubbed. Watching official translations (or dubs) that were likely way better than the fansubs was something to look forward to.

Nowadays I'm very likely to buy physical manga because I enjoy the art and I'm reading far more manga than watching anime.

Started Tamako Market after being recommended it several times and yes, it's charming in a way that's hard to parse. It's like Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi but more whimsical and wholesome.

Remake My Life! is hitting nostalgia buttons I didn't realize I had in the first handful of episodes.
The singer of the group using both Freckles and God Knows as performances... lord that tickled my brain.

Yep, this show is real good. Especially if you have ever worked in an office or watched Power Ranger, sentai, Kamen Rider, etc. If you've done both, this is definitely for you.

There are a select few series or movies with high enough quality boxsets that, if they're on the rare side (and especially for pre-2008 series that haven't been re-released), I'm willing to pay the premium

Incidentally this is why I own Haibane Renmei and the Japanese collector's blu-ray of Redline
