Uh. We're getting a Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer anime, apparently.

Planet With was pretty good, so I'm hopeful, but it was kind of a speedrun of the themes he likes to hit on. If they're cramming Biscuit Hammer into a single season I'll be a bit worried, but anything that gets us closer to a Spirit Circle anime is good.

Yeah it wont work in one season.

I like biscuit hammer more than spirit circle tho, personally. It just hits all the right stuff for me.

God, the Crunchyroll app, at least on Xbox, is such a sack of shit. Will it manage the Herculean task of starting an episode? Who knows?

    Crunchyroll on Roku experience:
Me: *presses right arrow on remote*
App: *15 seconds of grunting and sweating and intense faces*
Me:*presses right arrow? But a little harder maybe?*
App: Good news, I've successfuly highlighted the next item in the queue.
    Me: Oka-
App:And now I've highlighted the one after that, just like you asked me to!
    Me: You asshole

It's actually offensive to me how the Crunchyroll app has remained crappy for basically 10 years now. Like Netflix in 2012 had it figured out better than this.

And don't get me started on the massacre that is HiDive. What the fuck.

The app has better stability than before but the UI is still a fugly mess imo. It's just cumbersome to navigate, it always shows the same most popular shonen on the front page and nothing else, and the queue system is ugly as sin.

There's something to be said for curation, and that's something some apps completely fail at

It's something that Crunchyroll's phone app does better

Biscuit Hammer was neat when I read it just because the main villain is so affable. Sure his goal is to destroy the planet but he'll still chat with you about how your day's going while buying some instant noodles from the local convenience store.

Y'know, in between sending a succession of golems that only increase in power and complexity and all having the capability to murder you in various horrible ways.

    Tonight on AniMenagerie:

Season 3 is officially complete with Bakarina S2 ending. Much fun for all.

The mystery title was Dragon Ball: Curse of the Blood Rubies where Yamcha kicks more ass than most other characters combined.

Also, a dark pact was entered in order to get Zonugal to agree to watch the Rebuild of Evangeleon movies.

Season 4 of AniMenagerie starts next Monday for anyone interested in joining in.

Rebuild of Evangeleon nights are still being scheduled.

I used to watch Riverdale as it aired every week. I hadn't done that for a show in possible decades. You can't imagine my disappointment when it went off a cliff. It's the Aguirro-Sacasa curse, same thing befell Sabrina.

but why not just cover up a breast instead of not having a nipple, that just looks weird

So they can add the nipple to a blu-ray release?

Is that a thing? While we're at it, why are anime blu-rays so much more expensive, especially series

Oh yeah its a selling point.

Also anime dvds/blu-rays in japan are a huge scam they're marked up like 200 percent or something

    Late but:

Unlike the US where a network buys your show and that helps keep the lights on, Japanese TV has you paying for your time slot.

Which is part of why for example shows get heavily merched; merch and home video are where you actually make your money back on production

Also, if I understood it correctly, Japanese TV doesn't have laws that forbid "host selling":
The FCC recognized that children are especially susceptible to advertisers' messages, so it developed several rules and regulations on how marketers can sell their products on children's programming. One of those rules involves "host selling," in that the advertiser must not use a program's characters to advertise a product during the show.

Which is why you could see this:

man, the conversation Tomoko has with Nemo about how she puts herself into the character when playing a male game protagonist sounds really, really trans to me. I can't tell if that's the authorial intent or if it was intended just as more "Tomoko is a closet lesbian" stuff.

.... the more that I think about it the more the Tomoko is a trans egg idea makes sense

After the first episode I assumed Hakozume/Police in a Pod would just be a goofy workplace comedy where they happen to be cops. I was not prepared for episode two to be about domestic abuse or episode three to have them examining a dead body. There's still plenty of laughs, but when there's a serious topic it's taken seriously, and any jokes feel like people in a rough situation having a nervous outburst or trying to lighten the mood.

It's definitely a conversation that's been floating around with how to interpret Tomoko
My personal feeling is that Tomoko's really uncomfortable with expressing or even being honest to herself about her attraction to girls, so she's got a handful of denial tactics to kinda talk around those feelings. And a big recurring one is her phrasing her attractions and feelings as "if I was a guy." which of course conveniently ignores that she's obviously just describing her own feelings. I think her Persona comment feels like it fits right in with that. So like she definitely has an identification to the male gender, but in her case I think it's the social acceptability in a strictly gendered society of feeling attraction to and dating girls that's the draw for her, rather than actually being male.

Incest stuff is evergreen. It's easy to forget since we've left the Love Hina era of slapstick harems everywhere, as well as drifted a bit from OreImo's brand of nonsense, but two megapopular, multiple season series had premises that were nothing but:
"Hey, you have 13 secret sisters. Go live on an island with them."
"Five 19-21 year old female teachers adopted you and want you to call them mom."

Trashy anime is nothing new, it just seems like they've gotten really bold really quickly. The line between hentai and anime seems to be "full, on screen penetration" at this juncture.

Two more things about Dragon Ball: Curse of the Blood Rubies last night:
    • The Funimation dub cast Ladd Russo's voice actor for Oolong, and he mostly just did his Ladd Russo voice. It was an odd whiplash from earlier in this season of AniMenagerie.
    • Goku's attacks were wholly ineffective against the final boss, so Bulma beat him by herself.
