Best of all, no one judges anyone for it. At worst there's some light teasing, like "don't give up, there's still lots of men out there!".

It's entertaining enough, mostly for being different from most other shows, but goddamn, do you need to completely turn off your brain and just swallow every nonsensical thing that it spits out, especially since the second season started.

So far RoK's writing has felt pretty airtight to me? Like, every single twist has been foreshadowed from the jump, and even the most complex characters seem to have internal consistency. It's not quite Oddtaxi grade (and even that show had one or two loose ends out of convenience) but it's pretty darn close

It weirds me out when anime characters offer to share the thing they're drinking with someone else by proffering the same container they put their lips on. That's just unsanitary.

Ranking of Kings is weird to me. Ultimately, I think I like it, but I get a bit of dissonance between the art style and what's actually happening. I guess that's the point: here's a charming, adorable fairy tale world, and all the things that happen in fairy tales are actually kind of fucked

    Also recent spoilers:
not a fan of King Desha tolerating baby torture and doing a baby murder, a revolutionary war can be plenty terrible without doing that

    Final episode of Demon Slayer
Kinda ended flat after the insanity of the last couple of episodes. I get why they do the demon flashbacks every time they defeat one; to humanize them and drive home the morals etc etc, but man, it sucks up so much time. Like, ok our circumstances don't define us and compassion and humanity can trump literal demonic evil but hoooo boy do we really need to sink 10 minutes of a 30 minute episode into a character(s) that is literally disintegrating and will never be seen again?

    AoT latest episode
Oh shit Annie's back. Dunno what that means? Reinner, Annie, the Marley gang and the OG Scout crew are gonna have to team up to try and schwack Eren? Somebody needs to schwack Eren. I don’t think they'll actually schwack him,
though. Too much of this feels like a real heavy handed lesson about how nationalism, xenophobia, child soldiers and fleshy mecha can only ever create even more unstoppable hatred and violence and big, fleshy, damp mecha.

Heavy disagree. It especially loves to have characters re-declare things that are already known and then everybody reacts like it's brand new information. The most recent episode was particularly egregious with this, having three or four shocked announcements that the guy with immortality powers, who has shown his immortality powers in three or four prior episodes, is still immortal. Or conversations like:
"You have usurped the throne, opened a portal to hell, filled the castle with monsters, have released a band of murderous criminals, and are trying to kill literally everybody. Why?"
    "I wish for destruction."
    "NAAAANNNIIIIIII!?"

But also, and not a comprehensive list:
Oh no, Bojji's been thrown into a pit filled with poison to kill him! ...The very pit that was his destination all along. Also, next week, he's now immune to all poisons and always has been. Except for then.

An entire episode spent showing the demonic ritual of grinding up Daida's father to him, mixing it with monsters, and then cajoling him that he has to drink it himself. Nooo! How could my plan of grinding up his father's corpse in front of him have made him uncomfortable with drinking it! Well, just to club him over the head and pour it in his throat while unconscious, we never needed to corrupt him or his cooperation in the first place. This was all for theatrical drama!

I sense great evil in this mirror. Get rid of it. So, put it in your infant son's room where it can Sith whisper to him as a surrogate mother and she won't notice for the next decade and a half? Yeah, good enough.

Also, speaking of her, they're leaning in WAAAAY hard into her being a tragic, sympathetic character because she's a girl with big eyes, unjustly persecuted, even while she remorselessly accumulates a bloody body count in the thousands across decades of dedicated massacring women and children.

I think every single named character that has been 'killed' has come right back to life. Often because someone suddenly remembered they had an extra healing potion or just random snake powers. As snakes have.

They keep going on about how weak and helpless Bojji is every week lately when he has the power to disintegrate all physical matter with a touch. Which he gained in an afternoon. After about half a season of saying it was impossible for him to do anything. Which was the whole thing of his character in the first place.

And they keep going on about how much training Bojji did to become strong when it was literally 30 seconds with a dude who gave him said power by putting his hand on his shoulder. Also, that learning what atomic bonds are and then touching him somehow counts as training.

The whole episode about how torturing and murdering children for the amusement of racist genocidal soldiers is an ends justify the means kind of thing. Because the other dude is eviller. No we're not going to tell you how or why. Just trust us on this one.

There's at least a story and most episodes it moves in some direction, which is a shitload more than can be said for the vast majority of anime which still makes it easily watchable, but there is plenty of dumb nonsense almost every week, and the pacing grinding to a halt lately hasn't done it any favors.

I know we're watching the same show here, but I frankly feel like our brains are processing everything in entirely different ways - there are absolutely shows out there where I feel like they fall apart in the second half or have total ass pulls, a la BNA or Fena: Pirate Princess, where this one's arc feels to me a lot more like Mob Psycho 100 or a more standalone One Piece plot (Dressrosa particularly feels comparable)

I don't know what I have to say to you beyond that

RoK can be about a lot of things, and I'll be more open to a full-on analysis once it ends, but I get a strong feeling of it being:
    a) a classic tale of how power corrupts
    b) a deconstruction of both shonen fantasy and classic fairytales
    c) and combining both of the above to create an especially rich tale about not just the sins of the father, but actively learning about and confronting them

Bojji's whole deal is being a bright unstoppable force burning against the immovable object of generational traumas and a power structure of the world that's objectively amoral (I suspect we're gonna learn a lot mroe about this soon too), but unlike the comparable protagonist of Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann's Simon, we can't get any big bombastic speeches about breaking through the heavens. All we can get is a smile, some tears, and a boldly outstretched rapier in one hand and the other hand open to reach out in embrace

    And I think that's wonderful

Any themes about power corrupting or that Bojji has nothing but gumption and positivity struggle hard against
him getting arbitrarily bequethed with magical disintegration powers by the super genius prince of hell, making him the ordained most powerful person in the world.

That isn't fairy tale logic. Fairy tale logic is implying romantic love but actually being familial love, or the true form being an ogre instead of a princess, or the real power was confidence and/or inside you all along and/or trying really hard despite your disadvantages. Or if a classic fairy tale, that witches will eat everybody. I'd rather it was moving towards a lesson like that, that the inspiration he provides by never giving up in the face of adversity is true strength, but we're at the point of pulling Dragonball or Bleach shit where he's cowing people with the aura of his power level.
