But it feels like a series that will get axed shortly
That was my take, too, but color pages mean it'll probably stick around.
When Episode 2 happened, I honestly had to rewind and make sure I understood what happened correctly. The gears in my brain just came to a complete stop when it happened.
It's been a long time since a piece of media has pulled that off with me, so it was a nice experience.
AniList
He fought the king of the seafolk??
It was good! I liked everything I saw...
EXCEPT FOR PURI-PURI PRISONER!!
except the asterisk of the offensive gay predator stereotype because of course there is something like that god damn it anime
At least that character isnt supposed to be a black man though. It's a caricature of body bodybuilders that put on that really dark tanning oil (and just get really tan). As long as you get that it seems fine. It's just viewing it though an American lense that reminds us of racist American media.

You will see some very bronzed people
He could beat any anime
Bodybuilders deliberately dehydrate themselves before a showing so their muscles are extra emphasized. It results in some muscles that really should never be seen making an appearance as the skin stretches taut.
Like, if you were filling out your own VHS tape of anime, with each show getting one single episode, what gets in there?
I'm thinking of this as last night during AniMenagerie some folks commented that the bougie episode of Kill la Kill is considered by many to be the best episode of the series.
- Ergo Proxy Episode 16, Busy Doing Nothing. A wonderfully directed bottle episode as the gang are stuck halfway through their journey in the middle of nowhere, trying to find ways to deal with being stuck alone with their thoughts. I'm not sure this would work without context, but it's a pretty great ep.
- Mushishi is episodic so almost every episode would work, but my favorite is ep 20, A Sea of Ink. It might suffer as a standalone because it relies a lot on knowing Ginko's personality and how differently he acts around Tanyu, but it's a really lovely, quiet episode and for my money one of the most romantic episodes in any anime ever made, even though it's not a romance series and the show never openly says it's any such thing.
- Monster, Episode 9, The Girl and the Soldier. Dr Tenma has decided he's gonna kill Johan himself, and enrolls himself in a training program with a grizzled old army vet and his adopted daughter - who he adopted after killing her mother in a warzone.
- Samurai Champloo - Episode 22, the one where the gang eats wild mushrooms, gets high as fuck, fight zombies, die to an asteroid, and then sober up. There's better episodes of Champloo, but I'd really enjoy just throwing someone into this one blind.
- Bakemonogatari - Episode 12, the one where Senjougahara and Koyomi go on a date. A weirdly heartfelt episode where the two of them reveal themselves as absolute fucking lunatics (which we already knew), but also that they genuinely care about each other. It's also the episode where you kinda finally realize that Gahara isn't fucking with him by constantly rephrasing things, she's really struggling to express her own feelings.
baseball episode of JJK
mononoke tells self-contained stories over 2-3 episodes but they're very worth it
That's a toughie because episodes you would consider a good fit to this category (because you know and are fond of the characters) would not necessarily play well to someone coming in cold. For example, the Evangelion episode where Shinji and Asuka have to practice dancing together Silver Linings Playbook style (and also otherwise living in harmony) is a treasure. But is that the case if you don't know what the Angels are, who these kids are, what the stakes are, etc? I don't know about that.
With that said, here's my best attempt at a few:
- The baseball episode of Samurai Champloo
- The "Swing the bat" episode of FLCL
- The Alien homage episode of Bebop
- Mushroom Samba from Bebop
- Cowboy Andy from Bebop (depending on the audience I would suggest one of the three)
- The final episode of season 2 of Castlevania (obviously you're missing the build up, but as an animated representation of the games, top of the pile, easily)
- Gundam 08th Team, the episode where they fight the Gouf piloting Ace
I can't think of episodes for many of my favorites that would suffice without the lead in episodes, unfortunately.
