I think for Tenchi Universe I'd choose "No Need for a Carnival!"
    "No Need for a Carnival!"
When the Masaki shrine holds its annual fair, Tenchi takes an excited Sasami to see all the stalls and games that an Earth style carnival has to offer. Meanwhile, the other girls decide to really get into the spirit of things by running their own stalls

Features the whole cast, isn't dependent on any greater narrative, and is mega-wholesome.

I might go with the Robo Washuu episode, or maybe the swimsuit contest.

I was just thinking the Robo Washuu episode. Or maybe the first one was Ryoko's rival is introduced.

I rewatched FLCL for the first time in many years and...I'm not sure I ever want to watch it again, honestly.

The crazy randomnes now felt super irritating to me and also..

This is a show where an adult woman is constantly inappropriately touching or making sexual advances towards a young boy, and wow does it just feel super uncomfortable to watch now.

Haruka is absolutely a bad person tho. All the adults in Naota's life are (except the teacher I guess, who's just useless).

It's a big part of why he doesn't want to grow up, because all his role model adults are bad abusive people.

Honestly, I don't really care what kind of character Haruko is, or what means to an end her molesting of Naota serves to the shows themes.

I just think it's really gross, it made me legitimately uncomfortable, and it severely effected my opinion of something I really, really used to like.

One of the lines in the anime is that Haruko is a "manifestation of the feelings in your adolescent heart." I think the entire series is a commentary on growing up, and part of growing up is dealing with sexual ideas literally dominating your mind. So from that angle, you have a character like Haruko who is part wish fulfillment for Naota (whom has been used as a plaything by his older brother's ex girlfriend) and partly a lesson on how adults will use you to get what they really want (in Haruko's case, she's after essentially power because she's obsessed with a space god). The imagery of her literally pulling phallic objects out of his mind is pretty much dead commentary on what's going on in most teenage boys minds at any given moment.

So feel free to feel uncomfortable, I feel like that was maybe the point. I don't like most media with sexual assault in it, but if it has a story justification for being there and isn't just to make things more dramatic for the sake of it, it's "fine". Imo the show does a really, really good job of capturing the feeling of being a confused young teenager, who simultaneously wants to be seen as mature but is very obviously disdainful of most adults.

I get all the points you're making, and I'm not at all opposed to them, and just think it didn't need to go that hard to get it's point across. I feel like it's having it's cake and eating it too.

I mean all the stuff you're talking about? I thought the screenwriter, Yoji Enokido, handled much of them a lot better in his previous work. Which was Revolutionary Girl Utena

I've seen much worse from anime so I guess this is a different strokes kinda thing. Some subject matter is just uncomfortable no matter how you handle it and that's ok.

Nah, not at all. It's art that has spoken to a lot of people and lots of art that speaks to people is because well, real life is uncomfortable as hell and art tends to reflect that. No worries.

If ever there was a series you could just grab a random episode in and be golden, I'd say Gintama is it.

There is an overarching plot but it's barely there and almost every episode is just it's own thing. There are episodes with a miniarc where it gets serious but those are few and far between. Otherwise it's just a good time.

    Gintama the GOAT.

Honestly, any Trigun episode in the first half can be treated as a stand-alone, no context needed rollercoaster. I think it's part of what made Cowboy Bebop timeless, you could discover it through almost any episode and get it.

For some reason I started reading Kanojo mo Kanojo

KmK is like if you took one of those dumb horny melodramas like domestic girlfriend etc., except everyone involved is an idiot who yells their inner feelings out as loud as they can every 3 minutes. It's delightful.

Also Mirika approaches being a romantic rival with some amazing shounen rival / Team Rocket energy.

Yeah I fully went in to Kanojo Mo Kanojo/GFGF expecting it to be Domestic or Rental Girlfriend grade trash and it's honestly a lot better than either of those, both as a comedy and as a romance. Also surprisingly more poly-positive than typical for a harem, albeit frequently in some roundabout ways that don't necessarily jive with like, contemporary Western internet progressive ideas of what polyamory is

It's definitely not without caveats ofc but, overall, as dumb harem comedies go, can do a million times worse

Kanojo mo Kanojo is like 90% comedy so it's not like I'm invested in how any of it actually plays out

But I will say it feels like it introduces the other 2 characters way too soon and they take up way too much screentime, when it felt like there was still a ton of comedy to milk from the main 3.

Anyway current best outcome feels like dude ends up with youtuber girl and Saki takes all the rest of the girls for herself.

Man despite growing up with Ranma, so many of characters are just absolutely the shittiest people. Like being around any of them for any extended period of time would drive me bonkers.

    - Genma, Soun and Happosai are like the trifecta of absolute dirtbag parent figures and seem more interested in screwing over those around them then actually being any kind of parent or mentor figure
    - Nabiki would basically sell you into slavery for a kit kat bar or an index fund and quite literally has no morals other than making money.
    - Ryoga is just angry all the time but I see how it's played up for comedy so I'm not too fussed about him.
    - The Kuno siblings are just the stereotypical "our genes are better than yours you filthy commoners" so it's always good to see them screw up.

I'm honestly amazed Ranma and Akane turn out even halfway decent as they do.

Happosai is one of the worst anime characters of all-time. "I fucking HATE Happosai!" was something I literally shouted on the regular during my first watch-through of the show.
