So after Funimation pulled its library sharing from Crunchyroll because Crunchyroll was being too demanding on Funi, Sony (Funi) ends up buying Crunchyroll and putting them back together.

Convenient, but media consolidation remains a worrying thing.

The Crunchyroll app ekes out ahead of the Funimation app in usability though.

I assume "crunchyroll being too demanding" was "crunchyroll was asking for too much money for a buyout so we made our own streaming site to take all of the higher quality new content away so their business would suffer and they would sell to us lower"

I was thinking of this article: https://www.newsweek.com/funimation-crunchyroll-split-reason-why-1258066
"We did try to renew with [Crunchyroll], but there were some terms that they would not give on that we really had to have, to have a longer-term renewal with them," Funimation President and CEO, Gen Fukunaga told Newsweek. "And they wouldn't budge, and we couldn't renew on those terms. So Sony had to make this tough decision: if they weren't going to budge on those terms, then we just have to double down and decide if we're going to go at it alone. And that's what happened."

And of course they only have dubs for some of the "new" stuff like Kaguya. I prefer subs, but I could deal with it if that didn't mean there wasn't also no subs/captions at all. I'm missing so much dialog.

I'm probably one of the few people on the forums who was paying Funimation in lieu of Crunchyroll, but so long as the latter app is fine on Xbox, I guess this is whatever. Sounds like they're kicking me a coupon to switch as well.

Unfortunately in my experience the Xbox app is garbage tier; videos sometimes take repeated attempts to load and rewinding too much can cause it to fail at buffering.

On the bright side if you're paying for it you sidestep the terrible ads!

So Funimation bought out Madman, and added animelab to their shitty service, and now all their stuff is getting added to crunchyroll too?

Can crunchyroll at least incorporate stuff from the animelab web player? because it was the best in the business...

Cool, so now instead of CR, Funi and Hidive I can just do CR and Hidive. Couple bucks back in the pocket.

Also less having to deal with that Funimation player. It's awful. And it does this thing for me where it will fail to download just a tiny one or two second part and it just hangs there. If you skip ahead a few seconds it goes back to working but if you move back to see what you missed it just hangs again. So I have to reload the whole page. It was driving me mad.

Just did out of curiosity, it's totally solid! No notes! I still have to use the Xbox app in the living room because my wireless Switch headset is half dead, but that's neither here nor there.

Yes, the plan is to read the manga about two volumes a week, discuss it, then watch the film (and possibly the OVA) after. So, if you didn't think you'd be able to make it to live shows, but can handle reading some manga chapters every week, PM me for an invite to the Discord.

Our plan for Chapter 2 is Billy Bat, which is apparently a manga all about how Walt Disney is evil. Also excited about that!

So, something i wanan clear up re the manga, because i love Alita and also it's fucking werid is that there's currently 3 mangas.

There's the original battle angel alita/GUNMM. This tells a complete story, BUT, it came to a stop early because of the author's health. So the end is not the actually intended ending. There's Last Order, which continues the story as the author intended and gets wacky and has some of the best kungfu cyborgs and also a giant penis monster from mercury, and dont forget the vampires. This tells a complete story as well, and it's pretty great if UTTERLY INSANE AND WERID.

And then there's Mars Chronical which started contining the story and last i checked is still in a horrible extensive telling us about Alita's backstory on mars and i hate it and really want it to go back to the good contiuing the alita plot instead. But at least the author's having fun, so go him.

The previous seasons of Attack on Titan are known to have been a production hell, so Studio WIT asked for a less grueling production schedule and better pay for their animators.

The production team didn't want to meet those new terms, so they went with a different animation studio that would be willing to undergo the grueling production schedule in exchange for the prestige of working on the title.

Incidentally Wit Studio is working on Ranking of Kings now, which is a show with an art style that looks great and fluid even when stuff is slightly off model

Meanwhile I genuinely worry about MAPPA burning through the candle at both ends, their shit always looks incredible but they also have nonstop quotas every single cour

Mappa seems to be doing great work every except for AoT which is a shame. The story is strong enough to carry on but yeah, Wit just knocks everything out of the park while Mappa seems a bit inconsistent. JJK is like a non stop banger but then AoT feels very ... Thin is the word I wanna use. The lines are too thin.

It's possible, sure - a lot of it is drama and talking and such and can be handled with sets and costuming. A lot of the alchemy doesn't need significant special effects budget (Ed is very pragmatic and things like pulling a spear out of the ground and such shouldn't be too bad).

...but some of it needs all the special effects if you want to do it justice, especially in the final part of the story.

Also, it's just a big commitment to do it right. The anime is five seasons long and you could easily make another half season by not abridging the opening material so hard (to where it's suggested sometimes to watch the first bit of the original FMA anime before switching to Brotherhood to get that part, though it's more episodic and character introduction stuff).

I don't know if they still do, but there was a period where the actors at Funimation loved whenever an Osakan character showed up, because it meant they got to use their natural Texan accent. I remember them talking about it on a commentary track for some show or another.

At this point, I'm watching Tokyo 24th Ward just because it has clearly lost all control of every aspect of its production. The animation falling apart and getting episodes delayed the most boring part.
It is I, the evil terrorist clown, who took your weather balloons offline and created a tornado out of thin air! Hahahaha!

Okay, so anyway... a few months later, there's a new drug that's all the rage in the slums.

Wait, it's actually a new iTunes that gets you super high and/or incites a berserker rage when you listen to it.

Which is both a government conspiracy to purge the poors, and also a test for their emergency broadcast system 2.0 phone app that is literally Minority Report/Psycho Pass technology that everybody in the world downloads because they're good citizens.

And we're putting YOU in charge of it! Because nepotism!

Which is powered by your latently psychic dead friend/sister in a jar. I wonder if this might have anything to do with the mysterious calls we get from our dead friend that hijack our brains and gives us super powers? Nah. It's probably coincidence.

Now, a few months later again, I, your secretary, am the evil clown. See, I discovered that your dead friend wasn't actually dead, but telling anybody that might upset them, so I made up a terrorist clown to take the blame for all of the crazy unpredictable shit our lunatic evil mind control device plugged into her and designed to cleanse the undesirables from society might do.

Oh shit, my secretary clown terrorist almost died. That means I must be the new secret evil clown to keep this secret!
