There is a character in Food Wars (Megumi) who's backstory is that she's from rural japan

And when they do flashbacks or bring on characters from that backstory in the English dub those people from RURAL JAPAN have terrible deep south accents and it is incredibly fucking jarring

That's actually not that bad a choice, considering how a southern accent in the US is often stigmatized and the ways in which Tohoku dialect is stigmatized in Japan line up decently well

Wait, really? Huh. I don't know anything about Japanese regional dialects

They did it for Osaka in the Azumanga dub and it worked pretty well

For Excel Saga (manga) they used Geordie (Newcastle) accents for people from Okayama. It also worked pretty well.

Hell, I remember when Ranma used that trick decades ago.

Yo that armor is fucked up. Aside from the fact that it destroyed his body I cannot imagine giving in to that darkness is going to be great for his deteriorating mental health.
This whole arc was definitely a lot. Me putting the series down for several months after the conviction arc probably didn’t help. But the lore dump about the brand and their whole deal as well as the oh btw magic is a thing let me explain you it.

I wonder, in the Xenoblade Chronicles 1 and 2, did the different peoples in the original JP also have accents?

Because the accents in those are one of my absolutely favourite things, you don't get to hear non-US accents very often in games and making all cat people consistently Welsh is just *chef kiss*.

Xenoblade 1 everyone has accents because they localized it in the UK and then brought that over to America. I don't know if they ever publicly said why they decided to keep the accents with the later games.

Little bit of a heads up Realist hero is addressing slaves on the setting this week. I
Spoilers if you want to know how Souma handles it since presumably this will be two episodes like most arcs
So he wants to abolish it but realizes its to ingrained in the culture to do so outright. Instead he makes having well educated and paid servants basically mandatory for nobles and luckily a guy who inheirited( but didnt want ) a slave trader business has been treating his holdings like people and educating him helping to spur on a societal change

    Yeah, 2(?) weeks ago when:
The female dragon knight was introduced in her slave maid costume, and she complained the head maid whipped her mercilessly and then used magic to erase the scars, my reaction was:

"Was that supposed to be funny? Because it's not, and the head maid should have her head on a pike. That kind of abuse is fucked up, even if you paper over it with magic."

I'm trying to work my way through Avenger, a fairly obscure 2003 show, and it's...strange. Not in a wacky fun way. In a very slow, moody, 'what is the point of any of this?' way. The main girl wants revenge on a bad guy and wants to protect a little girl. The bad guy and bad girl did a bad thing and regret it, but will keep being bad for the greater good. Those points are repeated every episode. As in the main character will just say she wants to kill him, and then it will cut to the bad guy and girl saying they have regrets but will push on ahead with the evil murder plan. Also there's a fight scene every episode but it's always animated incredibly boringly.

I cannot emphasize enough how little character the main girl has. Last episode I watched, everyone else was talking about the episode's plot and she was just staring straight ahead, brooding and having the same flashback as always. Then she looked angry and said the bad guy's name, while the other characters glance between her and each other, obviously thinking she's completely insane.

I want to keep watching just to see if anything actually happens. The setting is actually really interesting, but I have a feeling it's not going to matter or go anywhere in the end. Oh, the music is really good. Or at least weird in a good way.

By the same band that did the Irina the Vampire Cosmonaut OP, which was also the only part of that show I enjoyed.
