    FINALLY

...now please, please please dont fuck this up, whatever studio. (I genuinely fear this getting fucked up given how much work Ryoko puts into her character designs and world)

Also, i finished watching Restaurant to Another World. Talk about pure fluff! But also pure fluff that made me very, very hungry repeatedly. Now i'm watching Ranking of Kings, which is real good and also immensely disturbing.

that is not a hygenic way to make medicine.

-Makes mistake of looking at what the spring season shows are-
-Another dozen or so isekai with cheat powers-
-Half a dozen other fantasy with cheat powers-

I think I might be able to suss out what the popular trend is.

A new Ikkitousen for some fucking reason isn't even the most objectionable show. I'm not even sure it's top three.

honestly Studio 4°C was the one studio that was really great at that style of anthology and they haven't done one in a hot minute, especially since Koji Morimoto stepped aside

Genius Party and Beyond are both great if you haven't seen those though

I can't remember the name of it but there was one Isekai I liked from a year or two back, had really nice animation and watercolor looking backgrounds

Had to ask my roommate, it was Grimgar. It didn't reinvent the wheel but was charming enough

Holy shit it was actually 4 years time has dilated

Decent dub too, felt more natural than most

I still want my Moonlit Fantasy season two release, I know it was announced as coming I just want it now. Yeah isekai has been done to death, but considering it released in 2012 (same as Jobless) all the "subverting" it does of isekai trends was done way before those trends even existed. Also I really enjoy the dynamics between Tomoe and Mio being forces of chaos incarnate while Makoto acts as the straight man of the comedy group. And with the addition of Shiki it provides Makoto a more level-headed partner for a different dynamic with the Academy coming into play.

Like anything, at some point, there's just too fucking much of it so even if it's actually fine, or would have even been good a few years back, it's all just one large indistinguishable morass. I wouldn't even say that isekai itself is the real problem, but the gamification of everything, isekai or not. Everything has to be an RPG where the main character not only has the undisputed highest power level, but it needs to be explicitly spelled out, and be undisputed in their spot as the ubermensch. Characters like Lina Inverse or Superman are certainly overpowered compared to everybody around them, but the stories focus on making them still challenged even by a dude with a gun that makes fabric extra squeezably soft. The appeal is not the hero facing adversity and overcoming it, but the humiliation and degradation of those who challenge the audience-insert's status as Actually Objectively Best At Everything, particularly with things like Shield Hero, which is a thing getting a new season in a couple weeks.

The Twelve Kingdoms is likewise fantastic (though it might not count on the technicality that the lead character is actually originally from the fantasy universe).

Maybe the trick is that the show has to predate it becoming a genre.

I think there can still be appeal to powerful isekai protagonists if the story is focused on how that power is either detrimental to their goals or not really helpful outside of combat. Makoto in Moonlit Fantasy, yes I will keep referring back to this one since I know it best, does both. He is incredibly powerful, almost on the level of a god in terms of sheer mana, but that power is only useful in combat. It doesn't do anything when it comes to running a store, doesn't resolve the racism inherent in the world under the goddess, actively draws problem people to him, and presents problems that can't be solved through brute force when it comes to running a country even with highly competent delegates handling the minutiae.

Superman stories are similar in that the best ones revolve around how being Superman will not help in his goal, or at least not in the way he wants to reach his goal. Certainly he could, but the method matters as much as the outcome if he wants to preserve his integrity. Killing Luthor would be incredibly easy for him but the moment he does he'd be discarding his ideals. Maybe that's a good thing, maybe it's terrible, the conflict is achieving his goals without compromising who he is.

I think it's important to note that Japan is literally an island and doesn't have... Any diversity especially in rural areas so western ideals of what's acceptable haven't quite reached and well, may never reach societies that don't have a robust multicultural population.

Like I literally added on, not an excuse but context. How can you expect the issues raised by minorities here in the western world, that already struggled to find a foothold here, to get that across literally across the ocean to people who don't speak their language?

Does anyone have any articles/webpages handy that go into the culture of tanned skin in Japan? I've seen tanning come up in four contexts in anime: 1) farm/fisher folk who are deeply tanned due to working in the sun all day, 2) sports folk who are deeply tanned due to practicing sports in the sun all day, 3) girls who get a deep tan the one day they're at the beach so they have very visible tanlines when they go back to wearing their normal outfits, 4) gyaru-style characters.

I always like to think of it as inverse goth, but that's not too far off. Classical beauty in Japanese culture was fair skin, dark hair, and demure so to rebel against the fuddy duddies, you go the opposite, dark skin, bright colored hair, and super outgoing. Ayumi Hamasaki, aka the queen of pop, was also a big driver of the fashion side. She was megapopular, so kind of like Rachel haircuts when Friends was a big thing.

It seems important to the conversation so I'll point out she didn't get a tan and is using makeup.

She pulls out a tiny half-empty bottle of foundation and I'm like, where are the other 6 jars you'd need for that?

Tonight on AniMenagerie we left Fate/Zero and began the semi-finals of Maximilian Pegasus' Duelist Kingdom tournament in Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wjZNz0Gj1TM

A show (and apparently franchise) that @IronKnuckle's Ghost had never experienced, so they had so many questions about how everything works.

Questions I personally could not fully answer as trying to logically understand that anime is madness...

Also, IKG & I were exposed to the Pirate Rap for the first time:

    And I couldn't stop laughing...
