Episode 9 of Miss Kuroitsu from the Monster Development Department is half beach episode with the second half stuffed full of a critical mass of tokusatsu references and goofy local heroes. I continue to highly recommend this show if both of those things amuse you.

So I've been neglecting my anime watchlist this season. I'm not done with anime, but it's become apparent to me in my old age with my job that I have time for exactly one thing in my life that's not work at any given time. So now that I'm playing Triangle Strategy, anime is on the back burner. The only show I felt compelled to watch week to week this season was Demon Slayer, and that's over.

I'm just a little sad that burning the candle at both ends still doesn't leave me time to do what I want and like to do, but I suppose that's adulting for you.

I will probably see the Jujutsu Kaisen movie this Saturday though.

Why yes Realist Hero, please spend half an episode talking about hygiene and bulldozing the slums to make free government housing. The race of people that can see germs and whatnot is a bit of a stretch, though.

And I will say that while I'm not happy with the whole "slavery is still legal" aspect, at least now the owners are strongly encouraged to educate and treat their slaves well under the threat of not advancing their own place in society.

Every isekai I've tried just feels incredibly lazy.

    Escaflowne is an isekai.
The Twelve Kingdoms is likewise fantastic (though it might not count on the technicality that the lead character is actually originally from the fantasy universe).

Maybe the trick is that the show has to predate it becoming a genre.

People writing stories that didn't just use that genre as the only reference versus people writing stories that are made almost entirely based on what they read in that genre?

    Edit:
You see, whether you can draw like this or not, being able to think up this kind of design, it depends on whether or not you can say to yourself, “Oh, yeah, girls like this exist in real life.” If you don’t spend time watching real people, you can’t do this, because you’ve never seen it.

Some people spend their lives interested only in themselves. Almost all Japanese animation is produced with hardly any basis taken from observing real people, you know. It’s produced by humans who can’t stand looking at other humans. And that’s why the industry is full of otaku!
That but for writing in general

Yeah, the Main Dude says he hates slavery, but that immediately freeing all of them would probably ruin the country (all but name-checking the US Civil War as the reason), so if he can upgrade their status and make their treatment better, that would go a lot farther in the long run.

From what I read of the Realist Hero manga based on the light novel, it has the problem of still being wish fulfillment so a ton of stuff that an actual realist would be stymied by almost completely like the government structure end up getting mostly just handwaved away. This makes the parts that aren't completely handwaved away like not being able to immediate abolish slavery due to entrenched interests stand out more.

Edit: I also feel and actual realist would be like, "any laws I pass about treatment of slaves won't be enforced for a ton of different reasons"

The whole thing comes down to "slaves that can read, write, and count are worth more than ones that don't, and the Royal Family won't acknowledge Lords/Ladies/Dukes/Duchesses with rewards and whatnot if their people are mistreated/lands are run poorly." It definitely reads as wish fulfillment, but in a way that "working hard improves your life" isn't actually a lie told by the rich to the poor.

    Last night on AniMenagerie:

Yu-Gi-Oh card rules are bullshit. But not as much bullshit as Yugi's power to cheat whenever he wants.

    Kill la Kill was awesome.

    There was a pirate rap.

Also, for maximum anime, while watching AniMenagerie and chatting in the discord, I was also watching the Discotek announcement twitch stream.

Symphogear Season 3 is finally getting it's blu-ray release. They also got the rights to the 90s Double Dragon cartoon to put on blu-ray. Original Devilman and Violence Jack are also both coming to blu-ray. Along with a bunch of old mecha shows I'm not super familiar with.

Darkstalkers oav is also coming to blu-ray with a bunch of extras. They're even doing two separate subtitle tracks for if you prefer the characters to have their US or Japanese names.

Plus a shit ton of Lupin III stuff. Mystery of Mamo blu-ray with all four English dubs included, First Contact movie with a new dub from the Adult Swim cast, first Lupin III TV series (green jacket) also with a new dub from the Adult Swim cast, and the most recent Lupin TV Special, Prison of the Past.

There's also Sgt. Frog Season 2.

The final bonus announcement was that they were putting the original Digimon series on blu-ray with some sort of arcane wizardry to upscale it to HD.

Ranking of Kings is the only current season show I've kept up with and have really liked it a lot. But I will say the late episodes have some issues.
It really stretches the trope of giving the villain a sympathetic backstory and how much that should segway into pseudo redemption. I thought one of the great aspects of the start of RoK was how everyone was not what they seemed like on the surface. Hiling is setup as the mean step mom, the snake laden spy master seems sus, but almost all of those early roles are flipped. But as mentioned the baby torture was necessary, and the concern for Miranjo stuff is just off. But there's so much else to the show to like I'm still onboard. Great animation showcase in the latest episode.

A modern civil servant trying to run a medieval state would be hilarious in how quickly they would fail.

Mostly they would look at the tax system and start crying.

Edit: They would try to create some sort of school system funded with taxes and then those schools would get burned down by peasants mad at the taxes and loss of labor.

Slavery apologia is easily the worst and most embarrassing aspect of the isekai subgenre at large, like it's way more damning than "These stories can all be kind of samey and often rely on video game mechanics as shorthand to replace storytelling", because I can still kind of enjoy that sort of dumb junkfood, but any time the slavery stuff pops up it's like... you could just not, and it wouldn't even change a ton, like make him just save that character's life and they swear a Wookiee life debt or something I don't care, there are ways to pair up disparate characters that aren't "Yo I bought this person, but it's okay because I treat them good"

He routed all the corrupt nobility it was the first story arc

unless you mean to say he eliminated all the nobility, that means essentially nothing

the nobility, even the 'good ones' who acted in the interest of their populace, by nature protect their own status above all else

The heart of the cards is ABSOLUTELY just cheating.

The power of the Millennium Puzzle is literally revealed to be
manipulation of fate. Aka Power of Plot. As long as Yugi has the Puzzle and doesn't want to lose he will not. The right card at the right time, hostage leverage being taken from the bad guy, even the Egyptian God cards find their way to him eventually because they're needed.

Though I will say the final duel in the series is pretty impressive just because
he doesn't have the Puzzle and has to pull out a win against someone who does.

There's a lot of "modern guy timetravels to become an ancient civil servant" light novels out there.
I'm honestly not sure which one realist hero is. There are some that are definitely filled with stupid landmines 100 chapters in.
I remember liking a low fantasy blacksmith one ok.
Honestly that's a whole nother common Isekai / Reincarnation genre. The artisan ones based on Food or Smithing or Farming, can be a nice treat, tho you have to watch out for the shitty harems that pop up in those as well.

and it's like, I can think of quite a few anime that show even the classic "political prisoners as house servants" variety of slavery as on objectively awful thing, even without the European imperialist chattel slavery of the last 500 years in the picture

so it's not like Japanese culture is magically immune to understanding that bit of moral relativism

like, Attack On Titan and Vinland Saga are right there
