The whole Bosse/Miranjo thing... doesn't make a whole lotta sense and honestly they're both kinda extremely huge pieces of shit. I don't know how much of that is intentional to make Bojji's humanity thing really pop or if its one of those things where they think they're making compelling and sympathetic but flawed villains but actually they're just stone cold bastards?

Regardless the animation slapped and also I love Despa and his stupid pants.

Uh... yeah. That's... um... an episode.
Daida comes back, uses the devil to wish Miranjo back to life and declares that he's going to marry her.

The evil Sith woman who groomed him from birth and has murdered thousands for literally no reason.

And everybody goes "Your punishment will be ruling the kingdom, and I guess fucking the child you spent the last fifteen years grooming."

Also, this time there are no downsides to the wish. He just gets it for free because... convenience?

Agggghhhh and now I'm remembering Johnny Quest and all the other cheesy old cartoons before the awesome ones were made. I was young, foolish, and daytime TV sucked before TiVo! It still sucks now but at least there's options.

    No, he did.

But it's even weirder. It was "Space Ghost and Dino Boy In the Lost Valley." The two separate things were paired together, the latter just being your run of the mill Land of the Lost type deal... except the titular Dino Boy main character was voiced by Johnny Carson. No, not that Johnny Carson. A different one.

Honestly I think the cartoon that sticks with me the most to this day because of how much I not only still quote it but also look back and realize it was my primary exposure to certain content way before I even understood that the content was not particularly liked by certain religious zealots, was Fairly Oddparents.

It would have probably been Avatar the Last Airbender but I was a late teen by then so while absolutely excellent my mind has already been mostly tempered by that point. Still had some good messages! They just didn't shape me as clearly.

I find it oddly interesting to hear about Toonami in America. Cartoon Network does exist here (Denmark), but only showed their original shows, so I mainly remember Toonami as being when they showed Samurai Jack and Megas XLR.

It's definitely most Americans first exposure to anime, and it actually being marketed towards kids. I remember getting Gundam and Zoids model kits from Walmart in 2004 and that was unheard of at the time but that's the power of Toonami. They singlehandedly created a generation of weebs

They've always just had excellent people in charge of music and promo materials, hence why people are so crazy for archiving the intros, bumpers and commericals. The music videos and game reviews were iconic too. I remember when they did the midnight run where it was all animated music videos and it introduced me to both Daft Punk and The Gorillaz at the same time. Incredible stuff.

So incredible. No to mention acts like Flying Lotus and Camu Tao (rip) got their big break via adult swim.

The thing to realize is that Toonami wasn't just a block - it had a style, an ethos. These interstitials were part of building that - they have a dreamlike quality, and asked viewers to engage. They also did shorts that were meant to be educational, but weren't pushy:

Oh man, Zoids and Zoid kits. I used to love making those. I'd get into Gunpala because i think i'd really enjoy it, but the other end of "Where the fuck do i store these!?" is an issue for me. I don't like having Stuff that dosent serve a purpose, and models sitting around looking pretty dosent pass that threshold for me.

Adult Swim is also as important as Toonami, and really once Toonami was cancelled became the only source for mature anime on TV.

    https://youtu.be/Pkup4zo97E0

^also talks about the music stuff.

There was also a plot to Tom and the ship, which I thought was really cool. I was scared as shit for Tom when he got eaten by the goop or whatever. I was like 9 tho.

Which is mildly amusing given the creator's own religion persuasions.

Sure, but I don't know you could easily find them in America before the shows actually aired here. I remember seeing them (along with all the coolest power ranger toys) at local Asian markets near me but I didn't see a Gundam until well into the 2000s at places like target and Walmart. Could be a regional thing too.

    Corrected.

"Du" is a possessive indicator (either meaning "belonging to" or "coming from"). It's the French equivalent to the English word "of". To properly express the concept of a cheese-flavored omelet, you need a descriptive indicator, in this case "au". The proper translation of "cheese omelet" is "omelette au fromage".

(Also, it isn't pronounced like "do". Well, the "d" is pronounced the same, but English people have enormous difficulty pronouncing the French "u". Like, I've never heard an Anglophone actually do it properly. I think the closest you pals come to is the "ew" sound, but it's a heck of a lot drier than that.

So I'm basically saying omelette of cheese then like broken French? I'm fine with that, because at this point I don't think I could change how ingrained that line is in my mind. Plus if I ever actually have occasion to use it it'd probably be in Quebec and that's fine because even if I'm speaking in completely shattered language I'll never know because no one in Quebec would ever deign to use English to tell me I'm wrong. I can just pretend they sound angry because of something else that's causing them mental duress besides one very dumb American.

You've... never actually been to Quebec, have you?

The Montrealers are definitely going to switch to English, and the subject, on account of not wanting you to embarrass yourself further. The other Quebecers are just gonna make fun of you. Probably call you a "touriste" and everything.

I have not no. Just seen the joke/stereotype/commonality about how people in Quebec are very proudly French to some pretty great lengths. I'll probably never actually get to Canada unless there's a revived forumer PAX South equivalent hosted there or something. Probably never even leave California again without some draw like that. And I can speak a broken language here just fine if that's what I want to do (I do not actually enjoy embarrassing myself but I can joke about doing it!) but mostly just because I can't roll my R's and that's kind of important for Spanish.
