Everyone should just bask in the origin of all Gundam. ∀ Gundam. Truly the peak of the series.

Also Build Divers Re:Rise absolutely has stakes, death, and is a damn fine gundam show that just cunningly disguises itself intially about being "Wow cool robot model kits" before shit gets real.
Was going to say. Also an interesting take on the Overly Self Confident character trope and seeing what happens when that meets real consequences.

Evangelion: Get in the robot, Shinji
Gundam: Get out of the robot, Amuro

(Aside: it's very amusing to me that Amuro's dub was also Mousse in Ranma 1/2. I kept picturing him fighting for Shampoo.)

Amuro is a self-made man, who took a small loan from his Dad of the best Mobile Suit in existence just to get started.

Okay but there comes a point in the show where even having the Gundam would not keep Amuro alive and it is his ability to pilot that keeps him alive. His potential becomes too much even to be properly expressed through the Gundam - that's why he keeps wearing the joints out and (admittedly a retcon) they develop the ALEX in 0080.

The final chapter of Beauty and the Beast Girl was very bittersweet.
Being a monster, Heath lived for a century or so after Lily's death. She traveled the world like she promised Lily, but at some point during the time skip she's lost her left arm so she wears their wedding rings on a necklace now.

She returns home and visits Lily's grave to talk about her travels, but gets tired and passes away on top of the grave.

It ends with Heath and Lily apparently being reunited in the afterlife and Lily is eager to hear the stories of Heath's travels.

Amuro is part of a long line of young folks cursed to pilot giant robots due to the actions or intentions of their parents. Trapped in the responsibility of being the only one who can do it, or at least do it well enough. Something about animator directors working out their dad issues. Not sure if he's the first one or just early on.
    Spoilers for Gundam Double Zeta
By the time you get to ZZ you've got Bright going, hey kids...you look hungry. Want to get in my van spaceship. You can sit in this robot if you like.

Gundam was sort of in reaction to but also part of the melange of a bunch of cartoons about kids who have a cool robot and they do simple superheroic bad guy fighting. At the time it was made it was subverting a great many tropes in the big robot fights genre that existed by making the robots standard military vehicles in a war like tanks or fighter planes, instead of something singular and all-powerful (though the gundam itself still carries a lot of that trope), having the bad guys being simply soldiers on an opposing side with human political motivations and not just moustache-twirling cartoon villains trying to vaguely rule the world for reasons, etc.

The best bot is that can describe three of the four protagonists! Kazami is just the obvious one. It's such a great show when it gets rolling and it's ending is just *chefs kiss*.

It even partially redeems build divers, which is impressive given how much drek that show was

Even with how the gundam shrugs off hits, it's not as fantastical as a super robot tends to be - it's merely better. Better gun, better melee weapons, etc, and then Amuro misses anyways. Definitely can see a reflection of them in it, though.

It's nowhere near as super robot as anything in G Gundam. Or some of the stuff that shows up for the finale of various series.

Amuro is fighting for the side of the imperialist oppressor, but that doesn't make him a villain. That's kind of a big theme running through Gundam - that good people fight for good reasons for bad people's own ends.

Does he? He fights the Titans offscreen in Zeta and then fights to prevent the Earth from being Colony dropped yet again in CCA. Is there a series where he's indefensibly on the wrong side? There's a ton of UC stuff I've never watched.

From what I understand beside making a mint off The little ball robot he tries to live in seclusion

Far as I can tell Amuro's happiest appearances in media are in SRW games, because there he gets a bunch of magical unique bullshit robots to nerd about.

For folks in the US, the Smithsonian Asian Art Museum is putting up the Satoshi Kon films and the doc about him. Free to watch in like a 7 day window starting the 26th.
    https://watch.eventive.org/satoshikon

Since most of these aren't streaming on major services and are just rentable or buyable thought some folks might be interested.

"Char is a pedophile" is just shorthand for "I didn't pay much attention while watching CCA."
People always act like Gyunei's word is gospel when he's very transparently trying to slander Char to scare away a teenage girl from idolizing Char, so that Gyunei can seduce aforesaid teenage girl for himself.

Gyunei's point that Char is a user is just... correct, though? Even if he didn't plan to do anything of that nature with the girl, he was EXTREMELY willing to imply he WOULD to make use of her. He was not a cool dude.
