Really don't think FMA needs a violence caveat for American teenagers. 99% certain they've seen worse in their media because blood and guts are par for the course.

It's the dread nipple that's arcane and forbidden in this society.

The violence in FMA isn't just like, someone getting decapitated in a goofy manner a la HxH. It's things like children being put through the ringer because of their shitty parents.

    And the war crimes!

    And the body horror!

    And the crimes!

Come to think of it, child neglect is one of the least worst things goi- *remembers Hawkeye's whole "my dad tattooed his research on my back" sitch* You know what, never mind!

Let's take FMA off that list for now, shall we?

Again, this is what YA is. You disrespect their intelligence and perception by saying they can't engage with difficult topics at that age.

Hm. I might cut off some of the shonen stuff? There are four shonen manga there. Maybe cut Naruto or Dragonball (since I feel like the early volumes are the weakest) for some Shoujo, drama, or comedy

The thing to understand is that teens LOVE Naruto and Dragonball, do not take this from them. These stories have the things their brains need.

The violence depicted in the first few chapters of FMA are more graphic and run the gamut of emotional and physical. I am saying to recommend it, but with the caveats. Don't just give it to a 15 year old with zero warning, they might not want that.

Caveat is fine, but I was addressing removal in that instance

While I haven't read or watched it, Demon Slayer is battle-manga that's complete in 23 volumes, so if shelf space is a consideration, maybe put that instead of the other shonen battle-manga?

As long as you cover all these you should be good, top of my head:

    - Shounen
    - Comedy
    - Romance
    - Slice of Life
    - Something Thought Provoking?
    - Something Weird
    - Something Angsty (but not Too Angsty)

I'm surprised that there's no support for Vinland Saga, especially given the omnibus version is pretty library-friendly from a physical standpoint.

It is also a personal pet peeve of mine when people try to force their perceptions of what kids should engage with on them, due in large part to the idiots who tried to make me read baby books as a kid, because it was "age appropriate", when on any given day I had a hardback Anne Cafferey novel from my mother's library in my backpack.

Even when I had the ambition to write a novel I learned the rule of thumb that "kids read up" when it comes to media. What that means is they tend to be more engaged with stuff that's technically just above them. This informs everything from how old a protagonist should ideally be to what subject matter is "allowed" where YA occupies the nebulous middle ground between children and adult where the spectrum blends together.

Seconding Silver Spoon, because it has a beginning, middle, end, is (sort of accidentally) educational, nothing anyone can object to in there, but still funny enough that my kids liked it.

Its funny watching people get angry that the dont understand what the spoiler for One Piece means and blaming it on people being vague instead of like

the inability to summarize 700 chapters of foreshadowing and world building in a post

It's more like 3 chapters of foreshadowing sprinkled in between 700 chapters of largely unrelated adventures honestly

Coincidentally, I'm just reading that, and while it's _fantastic_, there's a:very occasional minor nudity, and b:_lots_ of violence (especially in the earlier chapters), and violence that is significantly more grisly than usual.

That said, wow, this is potentially becoming one of my favorite stories -- the first parts felt like a bit of a slog keeping track of everyone, but once we've had all the major players introduced and things settle down that was great. Then I was absolutely not expecting it
to switch from a story about war to a story about farming
and I was even less expecting it to then turn into (admittedly briefly)
    Three Men And A Baby
and the 'hunter and hunted' arc is amazing as well. But there are probably too many heads-getting-axed-into-two to really be able to recommend it for a school.

For 1000 plus chapters we thought he was a rubber man, but it turns out he was actually a rubberhose man, with cartoony powers.

Also some stuff about carrying on the will of a dude from 800 years ago but that stuff's all still really vague so who cares.

That's not quite what it said...
The paramecium type gum-gum fruit was secretly actually the mythical zoan type human-human fruit, model nika-nika. Luffy ate a mythical zoan type fruit with the powers of a legendary human god with a rubber stretchy body, basically, rather than a rubber paramecium fruit.

Yes, but the manga also includes one of my favorite bits that was omitted from both anime:
The Ishbal leader surrenders to Bas Gran to try and end the war. He takes it to his commanding officer who orders him to just execute the leader and keep on slaughtering.

So Bas Gran shoots his C.O. in the head and says "Shame he was struck by a stray bullet on the command post." And everyone in the tent just agrees to that.

Hey, you gotta teach kids <Sharpe>good soldierin'</Sharpe> before they're of enlisting age, right?

    Minor addendum
    kfpij89uex7e.png

He is still a rubber man. But also a looney toons man.

And the various Gear powerups are more akin to the Zoan awakening (because it's a Zoan Human-Human fruit and not a paramecia)

EDIT: And it absolutely provides context as to why Luffy ccould 'blow' into his arm to make it become huge. He literally operates on cartoon logic.

Even Kaido pointed out earlier that fists sharply turning in midair is not something he was expecting from someone with a rubber body.

yeah getting whole series is preferable for a library, the point isn't a sampler platter to get people to go buy the rest. Super long series like most famous shonen battle stuff you can probably get away with just the first bunch of volumes though.

Beastars is the most YA thing I can think of, and that's wrapped up (though the English versions are about 5 volumes out still). There's blood and violence, but it's really mainly there to draw you in and spice things up, most of it is teens figuring shit out about adult life.
