I just checked out the 200 page one-shot from the Chainsaw Man creator, Goodbye Eri, that's on Shonen Jump, and I think there's just something about their style that clicks for me. I think the one-shot particularly worked because it relies on you reading through it quickly to jumble up your emotions, and it can spend pages on setup and the creator's swings between minimalism and maximalism without having to cram discreet starting and ending points into 20-something pages. I loved Chainsaw Man, but I think long form work may suit them better. I don't know if it's something everyone will like but I think it's worth a read.

    Last night on Animenagerie:

    Toon World
    Nui Harime
Arlong laying in plank pose as his animation cel moves around the screen.

Clearly the theme was Looney Tunes.

I liked how the pages that were essentially 4-koma were framed like they were literally the cellphone screen. Also how panels got blurry from time to time.

I realize that it would make the flow of action in a show worse

But not having a resource management component is what makes YGO a bad game

The lack of resource management isn't what makes YGO a bad game considering MTG does have it and it's still a bad game.

    MTG is a good game.

Any game where you can draw a card and it does nothing interesting is a bad game. Hearthstone got one thing right by making mana increase automatically so all drawn cards have unique effects.

I was playing the online version of the Pokemon TCG a few years back and dropped it when the meta shifted to "watch your opponent spend 4 minutes digging through their deck, until they have their full combo set up at the end of round 2 and you lose".

Buddy, I dunno what to tell you if you think Hearthstone is well designed.

Yeah because the explicit words of "got one thing right" clearly indicates I hold the remainder in high esteem.

I said on Animenagerie last night that Colin Mochrie would rule in the Yu-Gi-Oh anime, because the rules are made up and the points don't matter.

Reducing the odds of dead draws is an important factor in deck building

It's part of the learned skill of playing MtG

    Lol fair enough.

But resource draws are an important part of the balance, even if it isn’t ‘fun’ for you. It’s also not fun to draw a card that doesn’t effect the game at all!

That's what Land is though in MTG. A nothing card that adds to a pool, one per turn if you've got em. It doesn't do anything else outside of special rare types. Hearthstone just automated that +1 it so when a card is drawn you at least know it'll do something for active play rather than passive.

Which means without that Land you would not be able to do anything with the gas . And if there's one thing that irritates me in a card game it's not being able to do anything. It's only hype because a poor mechanic finally let you actually play the game.

There's other options of course besides dedicated resource cards and no resources or free resources. Letting any card be played as a resource is something I know some games have done.

YGO in the anime makes a lot more sense if you just pretend every Duelist is actually just an improv actor and Duelist Kingdom is one big freeform theater camp. Emphasis on the camp, especially for MAXIMILION PEGASUS.

So far my main takeaways from how Yu-Gi-Oh! (the game within the anime) are:
    • There are no rules. (As I have been told repeatedly in Animenagerie screenings, this is in large part due to the first season of the anime being produced prior to them actually creating rules for the physical card game.)
    • Everyone cheats.
    • Everyone cheats because the consequences for losing are being sent to VHS Hell.
    • You can and probably should summon your monsters in defense mode, but know that doing so is somehow playing exactly into your opponent's plan.

Oh the Shadow Realm is just a 4Kids thing. Everyone trying to send Yugi there is just trying to literally murder him in the actual canon.

Those magic saws Pandora had that would send whoever they touched to the Shadow Realm? They weren't magic before 4Kids, they were just saws and the loser would have their legs carved off to die of blood loss.

Code Geass so far reminds me a lot of more of Game Of Thrones: but anime more than LotGH did. It's wild.

Yeah, but Code Geass is like a person tumbling down a mountain, falling off a cliff, going through a skylight, and turning into a quintuple backflip axle perfect dive into a well with no splash.

Yeah the ending of Code Geass had absolutely no right to hit as goddamn PERFECTLY as it did. I've forgotten a lot about the show but I will never forget that ending.

...and that's also why I REFUSE to watch any of the new stuff because it's George-fucking-Lucas tier in terms of "...But Why."

lotgh's ending is fine. its a "not an ending" ending, because history doesn't end, it keeps going, that's the point of the show to some extent. if you told me the author had like 20 more books past where the OVA ended, I'd believe you

It absolutely closes the book though. Its just a history book, instead of a story.

I just dislike the direction they took with the story. I get where it's going, I just feel like it could've taken a more satisfying arc.
