If you ever pause a story to have the main character grind levels and show them grinding levels, oh boy. And no, I don't need to see a nigh-identical charsheet at the end of every chapter.

I'm pretty sure a good majority of web/light novels are written with one hand down the author's pants, metaphorically and (sometimes) literally.

    I fucking love technobabble.

One of the best parts of Irregular was just the five minutes they'd spend to tell you why a thing someone did happened. Just put that directly into my veins.

Also Isekai continues to be good, actually. Always nice to see the people who don't get popular things be mad about it tho. Next let's rail against Roblox or something. Rah rah those people playing things that just aren't good and I know so much better!

Anywho .. Watched that Couple of Cuckoos episode that just randomly popped up and boy they sure put every romcom trope on their checklist first episode. I'm impressed.

No one's railing on isekai for being "popular," it's because the genre's full of repetitions of harmful tropes and each one that comes out and blindly repeats those mistakes makes the genre worse. Same reason no one's railing on Roblox for being "popular" but because it's effectively a digital sweatshop profiting off of the labor of children while refusing to put in proper protections to prevent exploitation.

I'm back and forth between Kaguya and Spy x Family for show of the season.

Usually it's whichever I've seen more recently. So good!

Spy x Family oozing personality with its music this week.

The Kaguya soundtrack makes me think of 80s songs. Some of them are so close, but I can't quite recall the references.

Yeah, we should have never gotten down from our trees! The hell, homo habilis?

Some mothefucker a hundred thousand years ago learns how to piece together glottal stops into words and now I have to pay rent

Look, I'm pretty sure if we say the right combination of words in the right order at the right people, nobody will ever have to pay rent again. :rotate:

Like it's usually never even mentioned again by about episode three.

In which sense I guess Black Lagoon does make a better Isekai than most.

Isekai are dissapointing because a lot of them are "what if Sword Art Online had less likeable protagonists, more T&A and the more recent and disturbing trend of adding slavery". Which, gross.

Also I tend to get very bored every time that a show or a manga spend a lot of time on magic technobabble or even worse, gamer magic technobabble.

Remember the anime second season of sword art where Asuka became a helpless damsel kept in a cage to be menaced by a sexual predator? Are you sure sword art had none of the slavery angle?

Don't forget the villain's evil plan was develop VR tools into brainwashing tools and make her into his ideal waifu. Or that he was engaged to her in real life for some reason and her parents were willing to sign the marriage certificate in the place of their comatose daughter.

Yeah, I kinda prefer the Abridged version of Asuna and how she deals with the villain.

Anyways, on good anime, Spy x Family episode 3 is up, and it was good.
That welcome to the new home was adorable. And spies can do anything, even cookies. And Anya is all "I helped" and Lloyd is "yeah, nah".

That highbrow stuff is kinda boring, and we can see how the political climate of not East Germany looks. In short: :grimace:

We can see how the trio works in a scale. Yor is pure physical power, but she has the lowest information. Lloyd is 50/50 between information and power and Anya has the most information out of everybody, but she has the lowest capacity to affect the outcome.

Also Lloyd is right. Eat traaaaaash.

And the old lady was right. They do look like a cute family.

Next week is Eden Academy entrance exams. And (manga spoilers):
    ELEGANT!

I highly recommend watching from the commercial break (it's about 2/3rds of the way through the episode). It's fucking clean, and they do a real great job pulling the weight of everything leading up to this point.

Bad advice. This entire episode was maybe the most well done episode of One Piece ever, from both a directing and animation standpoint. Skipping through most of it would be doing yourself a disservice.

A reminder that at this point Abridged Asuna has already murdered at LEAST one person that tried to hurt Kirito. That we know of. And it was in SAO so it was a real kill, whereas in this game Oberon's guards get the joy of infinite respawns.

I think the Dad just seemed kinda resigned to her not waking up and was giving the skeevey guy power of attorney in the hopes he could wake her up someday it didnt make much sense no matter how you try to explain it.

I was under the impression the arranged marriage was part of some sort of business deal, since he was also giving the company to him as well.

After finally catching up with the That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime anime, I decided to try reading the light novels, and so far they’re…… okay? I was hoping they’d feel like the definitive version of the story, but while they definitely fill in some of the narrative gaps and provide good exposition, the author doesn’t seem particularly talented at describing what’s actually going on. Many moments that felt impressive or impactful in the anime are very underwhelming in text, or addressed with such little detail that it’s blink-and-you’ll-miss-it. I can attribute some of that to it being a translation, but not all.

They’ve also got the usual cultural dregs: sexualizing minors, casual misogyny, conservative worldview, etc. I’m about to hit the point where the anime stopped, and I’m honestly unsure if I’ll bother continuing or not. I’m still looking forward to seeing what happens in the story, but once I no longer have the visuals to fall back on, I don’t know how well any of the story beats will hit.

Good to know that Slime-kun's flaws after the opening acts are inherent to the work, honestly - was really hard to tell if it was just a bad adaptation or not, but it sounds like my decision to hard-drop it was the correct one

So, this week's Black Clover manga chapter
This feels like either the most asspull move possible, or the gutsiest twist I've ever seen in a shonen manga, I'm not sure which yet.

Like, the end of the Spade Arc was obviously disappointing and boring as hell, but the wild ass time theory going around makes sense and would be really, really fucking awesome if Tabata can actually pull it off.

Dropping this chapter and then announcing a 3 month break before the final arc starts is certainly a power move.

Yeah, this thing is like.... potentially making the end of that arc retroactively better which is a hell of an achievement

I'm really liking Spy X Family!

Whoever said that it reminds them of Baccano! was spot on. I think it's the music/aesthetic.

My favorite thing is that Anya is shown to be a kid, even with her powers. She's not super smart, or acts older than she is. It really helps a lot of the humor of the show.
