    Code Geass
They set the stage for the Geass mutation by showing the guy who got a Geass prior to LeLouch and how it mutated beyond his control. LeLouch, from what I recall, is simply too arrogant to heed the warning.

The mutation of his Geass is not intended and causes ALL commands he gives to be Geass’d.
And stops happening because C.C. somehow produces lenses that can block it, that he must then remove from his eye to use it. She speculates that the lenses will eventually stop working.

Code Geass is a delightful dumb guy show

    Absolutely entertaining trash fire

Doesn't stand up to a moment of examination, doesn't matter because the melodrama never stops

Any moment something in Lelouch's life goes right, a meteorite of karma desceneds, locates the bunker he's hiding in, robotechs in, stops in front of him, throws up a sign saying "You suck" and then hits him.

    Every. Time.

@Reynolds The fact that "Dwonk" has been right fucking there since the first episode giving away one of the best fucking twists in a tv show is one of my favoruite bits of foreshadowing and aggressive trolling on the creator's part

Well, in Fae mythology, the very definition of using a Geas is incurring a cost, so the backlash seems perfectly on brand to me.

I think it is entirely possible to contextually explain the signature tragic twist in S1 of Code Geass, or notice that there is some foreshadowing for it, but that's kind of missing the forest for the trees. Most people react pretty negatively to the twist simply because it feels very narratively unsatisfying.

I'm on the fence on whether or not I liked it, but it was damn sure unexpected and interesting, which is more than I can say for most twists.

For more context, I was thinking about how early in the season of Akibaranger, it was mentioned how Japan had Power Rangers shows ported back to Japan with the American plots dubbed back over with their original Sentai actors. Power Rangers SPD was currently airing over there.

I was curious about how Japan may have reacted to Power Rangers RPM (a post-apocalypstic deconstruction) being adapted from Go-Onger (a comical series that was basically Lazy Town with more punching).

I tried googling for any reactions, but it appears Japan had stopped redubbing Power Ranger series by the time RPM came out so it's hard to find reactions.

I did, however, find this image which sort of captures the tonal shift in a "if you know, you know" way:

    VHlV4aB.jpeg

I had meant the "if you know, you know" comment to refer to (Power Rangers RPM spoilers):
Dr. K trying to process the grief over her traumatic backstory, with the text "Based on Go-Onger" on screen.

Reynolds responded to my post with "Good ol' Hatte Saburo."

Re the twist. I am a sucker for writers that understand the optimal time to sucker punch the protagonist is when it looks like things are going well for him. Yeeeeeeeesssss never let them feel safe. Despair for my amusement!

My only problem with the Code Geass scene was the 'example' he used. Most people would just give a low key example like kick a puppy. Not leap right to ethnic cleansing or murdering every baby or something.

That's some hella weird word choices for someone who has generally been shown to at least be able to fake being normal.

Please, he's a highest-crust aristocrat talking to a fellow aristocrat of the same level. Puppy-kicking is too pedestrian for them to even register on their evilometer.

It is very unusual for a broadcast show to receive orders in batches that aren't close to multiples of 12 episodes, which is enough for one TV season.

One production pattern in the 90s and before that seemed to dry up a bit in the new millennium for TV adventure stories was often 1-2 initial episodes setting up a main plot, any number of episodes of side adventures on the way to the fireworks factory, then the season ending few episodes are at the fireworks factory. I kinda miss the tendency to write a bunch of one-off mostly self-contained side story plots in the middle. I imagine this pattern was largely to make it work in syndication where people can understand an episode at random when it shows up.

I saw this pop up the other week, there’s a full YouTube video of all the cutscenes out there. It’s not a completely terrible adaptation, like the bigger plot points are there. Well aside from the choices made in translation. Glory to Jean!

But also since you’re it’s a video game you can’t be playing a character so you have Char just cursing up the gundam pilot.

Everything is light novel adaptations now. Or if not that, trying to be like them.

So all the 'plot' and the only development for characters is in the first 3-4 episodes, or in this case because pacing is shit, 5. After that, we have our harem established. The cheat powers are already explained. We have our status quo. The novel is either picked up and will now go on forever without anything changing ever again, or will die ignomiously.

Stuff like this makes me think about the structure of something like Tenchi Universe, which I adore:

-- Six episodes dedicated to introducing characters (almost one per episode)
-- Six episodes dedicated to establishing character relationships/dynamics
-- Three episodes dedicated to a mini-arc, exploring character relationships/dynamics
-- Twelve episodes dedicated to a full arc, built off the groundwork of the previous fifteen episodes
-- A single episode which acts as an epilogue for the series

I desperately want more TV shows that follow this sort of structure.

yeah tenchi really nailed that format, a lot of the later imitator harem-romcom-adventure shows struggle with the structure beyond the initial introduce the partners episodes

Dumb, comic relief, thinks he's the main character, awkward shipping with him and the actual main character. That's a Gourry alright.

Unrelated, but Gourry's VA also plays Brock and James from Pokemon, and some guy named...Seto Kaiba?
