The 90s were great, you could hear all your favorite Pokemon actors in games like Valkyrie Profile and Star Ocean, then recognize Leonardo's voice during a hentai.

So it's actually only a 5 episode series?

No thats why its so weird

My only thought is maybe they got 13 episodes, stretched out book 1 to 5 episodes, then have 4 episodes for books 2 and 3.

Or else they do 5 episodes for book 2, and maybe some side story stuff for the last 2.

One production pattern in the 90s and before that seemed to dry up a bit in the new millennium for TV adventure stories was often 1-2 initial episodes setting up a main plot, any number of episodes of side adventures on the way to the fireworks factory, then the season ending few episodes are at the fireworks factory. I kinda miss the tendency to write a bunch of one-off mostly self-contained side story plots in the middle. I imagine this pattern was largely to make it work in syndication where people can understand an episode at random when it shows up.

Stuff like this makes me think about the structure of something like Tenchi Universe, which I adore:

-- Six episodes dedicated to introducing characters (almost one per episode)
-- Six episodes dedicated to establishing character relationships/dynamics
-- Three episodes dedicated to a mini-arc, exploring character relationships/dynamics
-- Twelve episodes dedicated to a full arc, built off the groundwork of the previous fifteen episodes
-- A single episode which acts as an epilogue for the series

I desperately want more TV shows that follow this sort of structure.

I feel like this is one the things that so many shows being visual novel adaptations (or things trying to be like them) had a significant invisible influence on because that's pretty much their exact structure. Everybody has an intro bit with their own mini arc, some filler, and then everybody has their actual story parts going out the other side. Even earlyish light novels still tended towards this structure of being focused on a girl at a time, rather than speedrunning to the full harem in the first arc as the pitch and then you were either set or had to figure out a different thing. Even manga tended to slowroll things and have distinct arcs at regular intervals that could be wrought and molded into seasonal stories with distinct endings.

When it's all light novel or gacha adaptations; shit that in general is designed for a status quo that goes on forever, media-as-service, you get the one 'good' intro arc and then white noise.

Valkyrie Profile's English voice acting is so weird to me. They killed it in the gameplay/battle portions, but most of the story parts are so hammy and silly sounding, and this is a game that begins with a prologue that's a fucking hour long cutscene. Or a mere 45 minutes if you skip the on-startup 15 minute prologue.

Slayers stars one Lina Inverse, a sociopathic mage who loves to take down criminals. Not because of any sense of justice, but because she wants their stuff.

They play magical tennis because they thought the ultimate magic book was glued to the trophy for some reason.

    And cheated anyway.

This was before they introduced a pokemon that would be a rival and main character.

    Slayers was... a thing.

I mean, I miss it and would watch another season, but...

Yeah, if One Piece is D&D players completely disrupting the plot of a game in another system, and Lodoss War is a completely serious D&D game, Slayers is what most actual D&D campaigns look like: lots of jokes while hunting for gold and new shinies until all the consequences of the GM's plot finally catch up to them.

She at least just limits herself to out and out criminals like bandits and such. Though if a bandit happens to be in rumor range of Lina they're going to have a very bad day because she believes criminals don't have rights, she has access to a landscape destroying spell, and she doesn't particularly understand the concept of "disproportionate retribution" if she thinks someone has slighted her.

She has something resembling a conscience. But I think it's half fueled by the expectation that taking out bad guys will get people to praise her and reward her, and that feeds her ego and she gets more loot that way. (Or at least the praise part, she's definitely got an ego there iirc)

Geass R2 #3: Kallen is being so fanserviced that it almost feels satirical at this point.
I half expected her to be piloting the mech in a towel without realizing.

Agreed that the shenanigans don't feel as compelling as season 1's,
especially with everyone and their mother having a Geas now,
but I'm still curious where it's going.

There was a Gundam live-action movie back in 1999! G-Saviour!
It was made in Canada and feels like it could have aired right after an early-season episode of Stargate SG-1. They use the Starship Troopers armor!

I forgot why Gourry was part of the Chaotic Loot aligned group in Slayers. I just remember that Lina was following him because she wants his ultra powerful magic sword and Xellos was following Lina because she had one of his artifacts and while he wanted it back he also was in no particular hurry since he was functionally immortal. The rest kinda just fell in with one of the first two.

Oh, Slayers also featured in two of my favorite AMV's. One set to "Cabaret" from some musical I don't recall, but the other "Demonheart" hails from ye olde 2004 and it's still a banger.

Lina and Gourry hang out ostensibly because Lina's interested in his sword, but really they just like each other's company. As opposed to her previous primary traveling companion...

Yeah, Naga. She's not in the TV series at all though, for some reason they decided the movies would be Lina+Naga in the earlier years and the TV series would be Lina+Gourrey and the rest of the crew.

Technically, there's a recurring character through the much later fourth and fifth seasons (the ones with the pokemon) that's basically a dullahan with Naga-with-amnesia stuck in it.

But it is debatable if it's REALLY Naga without the dumb fanservice and giant boobs.

After rewatching the Demonheart AMV I must now amend my original statement. Lina does not have access to a land-altering spell because ALL of her spells alter the land. And buildings. And people.

But since this is an early-90's comedy anime everyone caught in the blast just gets briefly blackened with wide-surprise blinking eyes even when ten city blocks just turned into a crater.

Having not read the Slayers novels (despite owning them...look, I have a lot of backlogs), I think I heard the following:
    • Season 3 was entirely made up for the anime and is not based on the novels (no idea about 4 and 5 since they were much later).
    • Lina + Naga were side stories that took place in the past, while Lina + Gourry are the main characters of the novels.
    • Zelgadis and Amelia apparently aren't main characters in the novels and are more like temporary party members?

None of the Slayers anime are really based on the actual novels. Some parts are more made up than others, but other than like... this dude is evil and a beast person in both the light novel and the anime, that's about as close as it comes.

Naga only ever appeared in a series of short stories, never in the main things.

Amelia was a main character the entire time she was around, but she wasn't introduced until halfway through the overall first arc, which was like the first 8-9 novels. Zelgadis was around from the start, but wasn't really a main character until Xellos showed up. They're replaced by Luke and Millina in the second arc.
